Claims
- 1. An electrooptical liquid crystal system
- which contains a dielectrically positive liquid crystal mixture and a further optically transparent medium between 2 electrodes which are optionally applied to substrate sheets;
- whose liquid crystal molecules in the switched-off state have an irregular orientation,
- in which one of the refractive indices of the liquid crystal mixture essentially agrees with the refractive index of the matrix n.sub.M and/or in which the quotient of the mass of the mass of the liquid crystal mixture and of the mass of the optically transparent medium is 1.5 or more,
- which, independently of the polarization of the incident light, has an electrically switchable transmission
- wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains one or more compounds of the formula I ##STR68## in which Q.sup.1 is ##STR69## are independently of one another trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 2-fluoro-1,4-phenylene, 3-fluoro-1,4-phenylene and one of A.sup.1 and, if present, A.sup.2 is also pyridine-2,5-diyl, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, tetrahydropyran-2,5-diyl or naphthalene-2,6-diyl,
- Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are independently of one another a single bond, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --COO--, --OCO--, --CH.sub.2 O--,
- Y and X are independently of one another H or F, and one of X and Y is also Cl,
- W is --Cl, --F, --CF.sub.3, --OCF.sub.3, or --OCHF.sub.2,
- R.sup.1 is alkyl having 1-12 C atoms, in which one or 2 non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups can also be replaced by --O-- or --CH.dbd.CH--, and
- m is 0, 1 or 2
- with the proviso that
- the mass ratio of compounds of formula I with respect to the mass of the liquid crystal mixture is at least 50%, and that the mixture contains less than 15% of terminally cyano-substituted components.
- 2. A system according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal mixture is embedded in the optically transparent medium in the form of compartments which are separated from one another.
- 3. A system according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal mixture forms an at least partially coherent, continuous phase in the optically transparent medium.
- 4. A system according to claim 2, wherein the system is a PDLC system.
- 5. A system according to claim 2, wherein the system is a NCAP system.
- 6. A system according to claim 3, wherein the system is a PN system.
- 7. A system according to claim 1, wherein that liquid crystal mixture additionally contains one or more compounds of the formula Ia ##STR70## in which ##STR71## independently of one another are trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 2-fluoro-1,4-phenylene or 3-fluoro-1,4-phenylene and
- X.sup.1 is H or F,
- and the following combinations apply to n, Z.sup.3 and Z.sup.4 :

- 8. A system according to claim 7, wherein in formula Ia ##STR72## is ##STR73##
- 9. A system according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains a dielectrically positive component A consisting of dielectrically positive compounds having .DELTA..epsilon..gtoreq.2, a dielectrically neutral component B consisting of compounds having -2.ltoreq..DELTA..epsilon..ltoreq.+2, and optionally a dielectrically negative component C of compounds having .DELTA..epsilon.<-2.
- 10. A system according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains one or more compounds of the formula Ig
- R.sup.1 --Q.sup.4 --COO--Q.sup.5 R.sup.2 Ig
- in which the radicals Q.sup.4 and Q.sup.5 in each case independently of one another are ##STR74## one or Q.sup.4 and Q.sup.5 is also ##STR75## and R.sup.2 is alkyl having 1-12 C atoms, in which one or 2 non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups can also be replaced by --O-- or --CH.dbd.CH--.
- 11. A system according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains one or more compounds of the formula Ih
- R.sup.1 --Q.sup.6 --C.tbd.C--Q.sup.7 --R.sup.2 Ih
- in which
- R.sup.2 is alkyl having 1-12 C atoms, in which one or 2 non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups can also be replaced by --O-- or --CH.dbd.CH--, or
- one of R.sup.1 or R.sup.2 is F, Cl, OCF.sub.3, OCHF.sub.2 or CF.sub.3,
- the radicals Q.sup.6 and Q.sup.7 independently of one another are ##STR76## Q.sup.6 is also ##STR77## and Q.sup.7 is also ##STR78##
- 12. A system according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains one or more compounds of the formula Ii
- R.sup.1 --Q.sup.8 --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --Q.sup.9 --R.sup.2 Ii
- in which
- R.sup.2 is alkyl having 1-12 C atoms, in which one or 2 non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups can also be replaced by --O-- or --CH.dbd.CH--, and
- the radicals Q.sup.8 and Q.sup.9 in each case independently of one another are trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 4,4'-biphenylyl, 4,4'-cyclohexylphenyl or 4,4'-phenylcyclohexyl, where one of the 1,4-phenylene groups present in the molecule can also be substituted by fluorine or chlorine.
- 13. A system according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal mixture has a dielectric anisotropy of .DELTA..epsilon.>3.
- 14. A system according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal mixture is based on compounds which have a dielectric anisotropy 3.ltoreq..DELTA..epsilon..ltoreq.15.
- 15. A system according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains a pleochroitic dye.
- 16. A system according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains a chiral doping component.
- 17. In a guest-host display, a display driven by an active or passive matrix, a projection system, a switch or a large-surface area display system containing an electrooptical liquid crystal system, the improvement wherein the system is one according to claim 1.
- 18. An electrooptical system containing an electrooptical system according to claim 1, which is driven by an active matrix.
- 19. A system according to claim 1, wherein W=Cl or F, with the proviso that if W=F, Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are not --COO-- or --OCO--.
- 20. A system according to claim 1, wherein W=OCF.sub.3, CF.sub.3 or OCF.sub.2 H.
- 21. A system according to claim 1, wherein Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 -- or a single bond.
- 22. A system according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains one or more compounds of the formula Id ##STR79## in which ##STR80## is 1,4-phenylene or trans-1,4-cycloxylene, ##STR81## is 1,4-phenylene, 2-fluoro-1,4-phenylene, 3-fluoro-1,4-phenylene or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene
- Z.sup.9 is a single bond, --COO--, --OCO-- or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --,
- Z.sup.10 is a single bond, --COO-- or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2, and
- s is 0 or 1.
- 23. An electrooptical liquid crystal system
- which contains a dielectrically positive liquid crystal mixture and a further optically transparent medium between 2 electrodes which are optionally applied to substrate sheets;
- whose liquid crystal molecules in the switched-off state have an irregular orientation,
- in which one of the refractive indices of the liquid crystal mixture essentially agrees with the refractive index of the matrix n.sub.M and/or in which the quotient of the mass of the mass of the liquid crystal mixture and of the mass of the optically transparent medium is 1.5 or more,
- which, independently of the polarization of the incident light, has an electrically switchable transmission
- wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains one or more compounds of the formula I ##STR82## in which Q.sup.1 is ##STR83## are independently of one another trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene,2-fluoro-1,4-phenylene, 3-fluoro-1,4-phenylene and one of A.sup.1 and, if present, A.sup.2 is also pyridine-2,5-diyl, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, tetrahydropyran-2,5-diyl or naphthalene-2,6-diyl,
- Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are independently of one another a single bond, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --COO--, --OCO--, --CH.sub.2 O--,
- Y and X are independently of one another H or F, and one of X and Y is also Cl,
- W is --Cl, --CF.sub.3, --OCF.sub.3, or --OCHF.sub.2,
- R.sup.1 alkyl having 1-12 C atoms, in which one or 2 non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups can also be replaced by --O-- or --CH.dbd.CH--, and
- m is 0, 1 or 2
- with the provisos that (i) the mixture contains less than 15% of terminally cyano-substituted compounds, and (ii) contains at least 50% of compounds of formula I.
- 24. In a guest-host display, a display driven by an active or passive matrix, a projection system, a switch or a large-surface area display system containing an electrooptical liquid crystal system, the improvement wherein the system is on according to claim 23.
- 25. A system according to claim 23, wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains one or more compounds of the formula Ib ##STR84## in which Q.sup.2 is ##STR85## one of the rings ##STR86## in which V.sup.1 is N or H, and the other, if present, is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene,
- X.sup.2 and Y.sup.2 independently of one another are H or F,
- P is 0 or 1, and
- Z.sup.5 and Z.sup.6 independently of one another are a single bond or CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --
- and R.sup.1 has the meaning given in claim 24.
- 26. A system according to claim 25, wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains one or more compounds of the formula Ic ##STR87## in which Q.sup.3 is ##STR88## one of the rings ##STR89## in which T is --CH.sub.2 or --O--, and the other, if present, is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 2-fluoro-1,4-phenylene or 3-fluoro-1,4-phenylene
- Z.sup.7 and Z.sup.8 independently of one another are a single bond, --COO--, --OCO-- or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --,
- r and q independently of one another are 0 or 1, and
- X.sup.3 is F or Cl, and ##STR90## is fluoro-2-chloro-1,4-phenylene or 3-fluoro- or 3-chloro-1,4-phenylene.
- 27. A system according to claim 23, wherein W=OCF.sub.3, CF.sub.3 or OCF.sub.2 H.
- 28. A system according to claim 23, wherein Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 -- or a single bond.
- 29. An electrooptical system containing an electrooptical system according to claim 23, which is driven by an active matrix.
- 30. An electrooptical liquid crystal system
- which contains a dielectrically positive liquid crystal mixture and a further optically transparent medium between 2 electrodes which are optionally applied to substrate sheets;
- whose liquid crystal molecules in the switched-off state have an irregular orientation,
- in which one of the refractive indices of the liquid crystal mixture essentially agrees with the refractive index of the matrix n.sub.M and/or in which the quotient of the mass of the mass of the liquid crystal mixture and of the mass of the optically transparent medium is 1.5 or more,
- which, independently of the polarization of the incident light, has an electrically switchable transmission
- wherein the liquid crystal mixture contains one or more compounds of the formula I ##STR91## in which Q.sup.1 is ##STR92## are 3-fluoro-1,4-phenylene,
- Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are --COO-- or --OCO--,
- Y and X are independently of one another H or F, and one of X and Y is also Cl,
- W is --OCF.sub.3 or --OCHF.sub.2,
- R.sup.1 is alkyl having 1-12 C atoms, in which one or 2 non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups can also be replaced by --O-- or --CH.dbd.CH--, and
- m is 0, 1 or 2
- with the proviso that
- the mass ratio of compounds of formula I with respect to the mass of the liquid crystal mixture is at least 50%, and that the mixture contains less than 15% of terminally cyano-substituted components.
