Claims
- 1. An electroslag remelting furnace start-up system wherein said furnace includes a mold, at least one electrode extending into the mold and a source of electrical power connected to the electrode, said start-up system comprising: a bottom pouring device having inlet means and outlet means, said outlet means being in fluid communication with the lower portion of the furnace mold for the introduction of molten slag thereinto; and slag transfer means, adapted to be positioned adjacent said bottom pouring device comprising slag crucible means and operating means, including control means, connected to and operable on said slag crucible means to transfer molten slag from said crucible means to said bottom pouring inlet means to introduce molten slag into the furnace mold, whereupon introduced molten slag rising in said mold engages the electrode and enables completion of the electrical power circuit of said furnace; said control means comprising means responsive to a condition indicative of said completion of the electrical power circuit to automatically render said operating means operable to discontinue transfer of molten slag from said slag crucible means to said bottom pouring device inlet means.
- 2. A start-up system for an electroslag remelting furnace as defined in claim 1, wherein said operating means includes an electrical power control means, means providing an electrical signal responsive to completion of said electrical power circuit by slag introduced into said mold indicative of a predetermined amount of molten slag having been introduced into the furnace mold to enable accurate control of pouring of molten slag from said slag crucible means.
- 3. A start-up system for an electroslag remelting furnace as defined in claim 2, wherein said power control means includes circuitry responsive to said signal indicative of the completion of said electrical power circuit, to control pouring of slag from said crucible.
- 4. A start-up system for an electroslag remelting furnace as defined in claim 2, wherein said signal indication is discernible by an operator and said power control means includes a manually actuatable switch enabling manual control, of said control means, for pouring of the molten slag.
- 5. A start-up system for an electroslag remelting furnace as defined in claim 1, including support means for said slag crucible means and wherein said slag crucible means includes a pouring spout connected to the lip thereof; said support means includes means for pivotally mounting said crucible means; and said operating means is operable on said crucible means to control its pivotal movement and enable pouring of molten slag from said pouring spout into said inlet means of said bottom pouring device.
- 6. A start-up system for an electroslag remelting furnace as defined in claim 5, wherein said operating means comprises a reversible motor and winch unit, said power control means is connected to operate said motor, and a motion transfer means connects between said winch and said crucible means whereby, when said motor is operated, said crucible means pivots to enable controlled pouring of molten slag from said spout.
- 7. A start-up system for an electroslag remelting furnace as defined in claim 6, wherein said motion transfer means includes a cable, a vertical support mounted and secured on said support means, and a pulley on said vertical support, said cable being guided over said pulley and connected between said winch and said crucible; and said motor and winch unit being secured on said support means.
- 8. A start-up system for an electroslag remelting furnace as defined in claim 1, wherein said slag crucible means includes a crucible shell having a bottom plate, a pouring spout located at an upper portion of said shell and a graphitized liner therein.
- 9. A start-up system for an electroslag remelting furnace as defined in claim 8, including high temperature insulation means disposed between said shell and said graphitized liner.
- 10. A start-up system for an electroslag remelting system as defined in claim 8, wherein said crucible means includes a pivot rod connected to said shell normal to the axis of said pouring spout and said pivot rod is pivotally supported in said supporting means on said support means.
- 11. A start-up system as defined in claim 1, wherein said furnace for electroslag remelting of metal includes means for causing relative motion between said electrode and said mold and wherein said mold comprises a bottom plate at the lower end thereof, said bottom pouring device comprises conduit means extending into the lower portion of said mold and extending outwardly and upwardly thereof.
- 12. A start-up system as defined in claim 11, wherein said conduit means enters said mold at such a point to permit introduction of slag into said mold at a point below the lowermost end of said electrode.
- 13. A start-up system as defined in claim 11, wherein said conduit means enters said mold at a point above its said bottom plate.
- 14. A start-up system as defined in claim 11, said bottom pouring device inlet means comprising upwardly extending funnel means constructed to receive molten slag poured thereinto outside of said mold and to deliver said slag under gravity flow into said mold.
- 15. A start-up system as defined in claim 11, wherein said conduit means is at least partially lined with a refractory material.
- 16. A start-up system as defined in claim 11, wherein said conduit means includes said inlet means and funnel means included in said inlet means extends upwardly sufficiently to hold molten slag at a level higher than the lowermost end of said electrode.
- 17. A start-up system as defined in claim 11, wherein said conduit means includes a slag conducting aperture located in said mold sidewall at a point above the lowermost boundary of the start-up remelting zone.
- 18. A start-up system as defined in claim 11, wherein said conduit means includes a slag conducting aperture located in said mold sidewall at a point below the lowermost end of said consumable electrode.
- 19. A start-up system as defined in claim 11, wherein said mold includes a bottom plate at the lower end thereof and wherein said conduit means includes a slag conducting aperture located in said bottom plate.
- 20. A start-up system for an electroslag remelting system as defined in claim 1, wherein said inlet means is below the top of said mold and above the top of the level of a predetermined amount of molten slag necessary for furnace start-up.
- 21. A start-up system as defined in claim 1, wherein a plurality of electrodes extend into said mold.
- 22. A start-up system as defined in claim 1, said furnace including a power supply source, and at least one pair of consumable electrodes to be immersed into said molten slag bath and connected to said power source; a mechanism for effecting simultaneous feeding of said electrodes while they are melted in said slag bath; a conductor for providing equalizing current to said consumable electrode means connected between said slag bath and said supply source.
- 23. A start-up system as defined in claim 22, wherein said consumable electrode means consists of one pair of electrodes.
- 24. A start-up system as defined in claim 22, wherein said consumable electrode means comprises separate groups of two electrodes each.
- 25. A start-up system as defined in claim 22, wherein said equalizing means comprises a conductor connected between said mold and a voltage in circuit with said power supply means between the voltages applied by said power supply means.
- 26. A start-up system as defined in claim 25, wherein said conductor is connected between the bottom of said mold and said voltage in circuit with said power supply means.
- 27. A start-up system as defined in claim 26, wherein said voltage in circuit with said power supply means is midway between the voltages applied by said power supply means to said electrodes.
- 28. A start-up system as defined in claim 22, wherein said power supply means includes a power transformer and wherein one electrode of the pair of electrodes is connected to one terminal of the secondary winding of said transformer and the other electrode is connected to the other terminal thereof.
- 29. A start-up system as defined in claim 22, wherein said electrical power supply means includes a single phase transformer connected in series with said consumable electrode means.
- 30. A start-up system as defined in claim 22, wherein said pair of consumable electrodes is disposed symmetrically relative to said mold.
- 31. A start-up system as defined in claim 22, wherein one end of said conductor of equalizing current is connected to the point of half-voltage of the secondary winding of a single-phase power transformer of said power supply source, while the other end thereof is connected to said bottom plate of said mold.
- 32. A start-up system as defined in claim 22, wherein one end of said conductor of equalizing current is connected to the point of half-voltage of the winding of a choke, connected in parallel with the secondary winding of the single-phase power transformer of said power supply source, while the other end thereof is connected to said bottom plate mounting said mold.
- 33. A start-up system as defined in claim 22, wherein said bottom plate has a recess formed therein and a weld lug means in electrical contact with the wall of said recess.
- 34. A start-up system as defined in claim 33 wherein said weld lug is of the same composition as the ingot which is formed by the melting of said consumable electrodes in the slag bath.
- 35. A start-up system as defined in claim 34, wherein said conductor providing for equalizing current is connected to said bottom plate and directly to said weld lug.
- 36. A start-up system as defined in claim 1, wherein said bottom plate has a recess formed therein and a weld lug means in electrical contact with the wall of said recess.
- 37. A start-up system as defined in claim 36, wherein said weld lug is of the same composition as the ingot which is formed by the melting of said consumable electrodes in the slag bath.
- 38. A start-up system as defined in claim 1, wherein said slag transfer means comprises transport means enabling said crucible means to be shiftable to and from pouring position adjacent said furnace.
- 39. A start-up system as defined in claim 38, wherein said transport means includes a wheeled dolly supporting said crucible means and at least a portion of said operating means.
