Claims
- 1. Fuel filter for filtering fuel flowing through a fuel line for delivering fuel to the engine of a motor vehicle, said motor vehicle having a common electrical plane maintained at a common electrical potential, said fuel filter including a housing having an inlet fitting and an outlet fitting connected in said fuel housing, a circumferentially extending array of filtering media within said housing between the inlet fitting and the outlet fitting for filtering the fuel delivered to the engine by the fuel line, said filtering media defining an inner cavity within the filtering media communicated with one of said fittings, said filtering media cooperating with said housing to define an outer cavity communicating with the other fitting, said housing being primarily composed of an electrically non-conductive material, and conductive means for providing an electrically conductive path between the fuel within said outer cavity and said common electrical plane said electrically conductive path being effective to prevent the build-up of electrostatic charge in the fuel flowing through the filter and to thereby prevent arcing which causes breakdown of the electrically non-conductive housing material.
- 2. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 1, wherein at least a portion of said conductive means extends through said housing.
- 3. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said conductive means includes electrically conductive material embedded in said electrically non-conductive material of said housing.
- 4. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 2, wherein said non-conductive material is a polymer material and the fibers comprises at least 3% to 9% by weight of the composite material.
- 5. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 4, wherein said fibers are stainless steel fibers having a minimum length of about 4 mm.
- 6. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 2, wherein a filtering media within said housing divides the latter into an inlet chamber communicated with said inlet and an outlet chamber communicated with said outlet, said electrically conductive path extending between the fuel is said inlet chamber and the common electrical plane.
- 7. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 6, wherein said filtering media is an annular member having inner and outer surfaces, said outer surface cooperating with said housing to define said inlet chamber between the housing and said outer surface of the media.
- 8. Fuel filter for filtering fuel comprising a housing having an inlet and an outlet, a filtering media within said housing between the inlet and the outlet, said housing being primarily composed of an electrically non-conductive material, said conductive means for providing an electrically conductive path between the fuel within said housing and a common electrical plane outside of said housing, said filtering media within said housing dividing the latter into an inlet chamber communicated with said inlet and an outlet chamber communicated with said outlet, said electrically conductive path extending between the fuel in said inlet chamber and the common electrical plane said electrically conductive path being effective to prevent the build-up of electrostatic charge in the fuel flowing through the filter and to thereby prevent arcing which causes breakdown of the electrically non-conductive housing material.
- 9. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 8, wherein at least a portion of said conductive means extends through said housing.
- 10. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 8, wherein said conductive means includes electrically conductive material embedded in said electrically non-conductive material of said housing.
- 11. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 8, wherein said electrically conductive material includes electrically conductive fibers distributed randomly in said electrically non-conductive material.
- 12. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 11, wherein said non-conductive material is a polymer material and the fibers comprise at least 3% to 9% by weight of the composite material.
- 13. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 12, wherein said fibers are stainless steel fibers having a minimum length of about 4 mm.
- 14. Fuel filter as claimed in claim 8, wherein said filtering media is an annular member having inner and outer surfaces, said outer surface cooperating with said housing to define said inlet chamber between the housing and said outer surface of the media.
