Claims
- 1. In an imaging process comprising the steps of providing an imaging member having a recording surface, forming an electrostatic latent image on said recording surface, developing said latent image by contacting said recording surface with an electrostatographic developer material comprising finely-divided toner particles electrostatically clinging to the surface of carrier particles, and removing at least a portion of any residual developer material from said recording surface; wherein the improvement consists of depositing a film on said recording surface, said film having an average thickness of from about 1A to about 200A, and wherein said film consists of a lubricant selected from the group consisting of phthalic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, and the metal and ammonium salts thereof.
- 2. In an imaging process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the metal salt is a compound selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal salt, an alkaline earth metal salt, a zinc, cadmium, aluminum, Fe.sup.+++, cobalt, lead, silver, Cu.sup.++, and nickel salt.
- 3. In an imaging process in accordance with claim 2 wherein said compound is a sodium salt of terephthalic acid.
- 4. In an imaging process in accordance with claim 2 wherein said compound is a calcium salt of terephthalic acid.
- 5. In an imaging process in accordance with claim 1 wherein said film consists of the ammonium salt of phthalic acid, isophthalic acid or terephthalic acid.
- 6. In an imaging process in accordance with claim 1 wherein said film consists of terephthalic acid.
- 7. In an imaging process in accordance with claim 1 wherein said film consists of isophthalic acid.
- 8. In an imaging process in accordance with claim 1 wherein said film consists of phthalic acid.
- 9. An imaging process comprising:
- (a) periodically dispensing on a reusable imaging surface a lubricant selected from the group consisting of phthalic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, the metal and ammonium salts thereof;
- (b) forming an electrostatic latent image on said reusable imaging surface;
- (c) developing said latent image by bringing an electrostatographic developer material within the influence of said latent image;
- (d) removing at least a portion of any residual developed image from said surface; and
- (e) repeating steps (a) - (d) in sequence at least one additional time to form a film of said lubricant on said imaging surface wherein said film has an average thickness of from about 1A to about 200A.
- 10. An imaging process in accordance with claim 9, wherein said lubricant is a metal salt of phthalic acid, isophthalic acid or terephthalic acid.
- 11. An imaging process in accordance with claim 10 wherein the metal salt is selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal salt, an alkaline earth metal salt, a zinc, cadmium, aluminum, Fe.sup.+++, cobalt, lead, silver, Cu.sup.++, and nickel salt.
- 12. An imaging process in accordance with claim 10 wherein the metal salt is a sodium salt of terephthalic acid.
- 13. An imaging process in accordance with claim 10 wherein the metal salt is a calcium salt of terephthalic acid.
- 14. An imaging process in accordance with claim 9 wherein said lubricant is an ammonium salt of phthalic acid, isophthalic acid, or terephthalic acid.
- 15. An imaging process in accordance with claim 9 wherein said lubricant is terephthalic acid.
- 16. An imaging process in accordance with claim 9 wherein said lubricant is isophthalic acid.
- 17. An imaging process in accordance with claim 9 wherein said lubricant is phthalic acid.
- 18. An imaging process in accordance with claim 9 including the step of transferring the developed image to a support surface.
- 19. An imaging process in accordance with claim 9 wherein said lubricant is dispensed on said imaging surface by presenting against said imaging surface a dispensing surface carrying on at least the area adjacent said imaging surface said lubricant in transferable form.
- 20. An imaging process in accordance with claim 19 wherein said dispensing surface is a solid bar of said lubricant.
- 21. An imaging process in accordance with claim 19 wherein said dispensing surface is a flexible material carrying said lubricant.
- 22. An imaging process in accordance with claim 21 wherein said flexible material is a fibrous material.
- 23. An imaging process in accordance with claim 22 wherein said fibrous material is in the form of a web.
- 24. An imaging process in accordance with claim 22 wherein said fibrous material is in the form of a brush.
- 25. An electrostatographic imaging process comprising the steps of:
- (a) forming an electrostatic latent image on a reusable imaging surface;
- (b) developing said latent image by bringing an electrostatographic developer material within the influence of said latent image;
- (c) transferring the developed image to a support surface;
- (d) removing at least a portion of any residual developed image from said imaging surface;
- (e) dispensing on said imaging surface a lubricant selected from the group consisting of phthalic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, the metal and ammonium salts thereof; and
- (f) repeating steps (a) - (e) in sequence at least one additional time to form a film of said lubricant on said imaging surface wherein said film has an average thickness of from about 1A to about 200A.
