Claims
- 1. An electrosurgical electrode comprising:
a) an elongated body having first means at a first end for removably attaching to the nosepiece of an electrosurgical handpiece, b) said elongated body having second means at a second end providing an active electrosurgical end capable of supplying electrosurgical currents when the first means is connected to electrosurgical apparatus, c) said second means comprising a generally spoon-shaped body having along a front portion of its periphery, projecting forwardly of the spoon-shaped body in a direction away from the first end, an exposed surface for contacting tissue.
- 2. An electrosurgical electrode as set forth in claim 1, wherein the exposed surface comprises part of a wire loop.
- 3. An electrosurgical electrode as set forth in claim 1, wherein the exposed surface comprises a serrated edge.
- 4. An electrosurgical electrode as set forth in claim 1, wherein the electrode is a unipolar electrode and the spoon-shaped body has an upper side and a lower side and is solid and its lower side is coated with an electrically-insulating layer, the exposed surface along the front portion being free of the coating.
- 5. An electrosurgical electrode as set forth in claim 1, wherein the the electrode is a unipolar electrode and the elongated body comprises a hollow tube extending between the first means and the upper side of the spoon-shaped body.
- 6. An electrosurgical electrode as set forth in claim 5, wherein the spoon-shaped body curves upward at an angle of about 5°-20°.
- 7. An electrosurgical electrode as set forth in claim 5, wherein the elongated body is everywhere, except for the first means and the exposed surface, coated with all electrically-insulating layer.
- 8. In combination:
a) an electrosurgical handpiece having:
i) an electrically-conductive front end and a first conduit means for suction or fluid to the front end, ii) electrical means for conveying unipolar electrosurgical currents to the electrically-conductive front end, iii) second conduit means for receiving suction or fluid and for conveying same to the front conduit means, b) a unipolar electrosurgical electrode comprising:
i) an elongated body having first means at a first end for removably attaching and electrically-connecting to the front end of the electrosurgical handpiece, ii) said elongated body having second means at a second end providing an active electrosurgical end capable of supplying unipolar electrosurgical currents when the electrosurgical handpiece is connected to a source of electrosurgical currents, iii) said second means comprising a generally spoon-shaped body having a lower side and an upper side and, along a front portion of its periphery, projecting forwardly of the spoon-shaped body in a direction away from the first end, an exposed surface, iv) the elongated body comprising a hollow tube extending between the first means and the upper side of the spoon-shaped body and coupled to the first conduit means and capable of conveying the suction or fluid to the upper side of the spoon-shaped body.
- 9. The combination of claim 8, wherein the exposed surface comprises a serrated edge or wire loop.
- 10. The combination of claim 8, wherein the spoon-shaped body is solid and its lower side is coated with an electrically-insulating layer, the exposed surface along the front portion being free of the coating.
- 11. The combination of claim 8, further comprising electrosurgical apparatus capable of supplying RF electrosurgical currents at a frequency of about 3.8-4 MHz, the electrosurgical handpiece being connected to the electrosurgical apparatus.
- 12. The combination of claim 11, further comprising a source of suction or fluid, the source of suction or fluid being connected to the second conduit means of the electrosurgical handpiece.
- 13. A procedure for excising tonsil or adenoid tissue comprising:
(a) providing an electrosurgical electrode comprising:
i) an elongated body having first means at a first end for removably attaching to the nosepiece of an electrosurgical handpiece, ii) said elongated body having second means at a second end providing an active electrosurgical end capable of supplying electrosurgical currents when the first means is connected to electrosurgical apparatus, iii) said second means comprising a generally spoon-shaped body having along a front portion of its periphery, projecting forwardly of the spoon-shaped body in a direction away from the first end, an exposed surface for contacting tissue; (b) bluntly excising the tonsil or adenoid tissue by applying pressure with the exposed surface to the base of the tonsil or adenoid tissue until the tonsil or adenoid tissue is at least partly excised.
- 14. A procedure for excising tonsil or adenoid tissue as set forth in claim 13, wherein the exposed surface is serrated or formed by a wire loop.
- 15. A procedure for excising tonsil or adenoid tissue as set forth in claim 14, wherein electrosurgical currents are applied to the active electrosurgical end during at least part of the time that step (b) is carried out.
- 16. A procedure for excising tonsil or adenoid tissue as set forth in claim 15, wherein the electrosurgical electrode incorporates means for supplying suction or fluid to the active electrosurgical end, and suction or fluid is applied to the active electrosurgical end while electrosurgical currents are applied to the active electrosurgical end during at least part of the time that step (b) is carried out.
- 17. A procedure for excising tonsil or adenoid tissue as set forth in claim 13, further comprising a source of electrosurgical currents having a frequency in the range of about 3.8-4.0 MHz, wherein the electrosurgical currents are applied to the active electrosurgical end during at least part of the time that step (b) is carried out.

[0002] This invention relates to electrosurgery, and in particular to an electrode for attachment to an electrosurgical handpiece for use in electrosurgical procedures which tend to produce vapors, odors or smoke plumes or which may require irrigation.
