Claims
- 1. A compound of structural formula: ##STR38## or an ophthamologically acceptable salt thereof wherein, R is in the 5- or 6-position and is HO--, ##STR39## wherein R.sup.1 is C.sub.1-4 alkyl, or ##STR40##
- 2. The compound of claim 1, which is:
- 5 (or 6) -hydroxy-2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thiophene;
- 5 (or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl) acetate;
- 5 (or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl) 2,2-dimethylpropionate;
- 5 (or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl) 2-methylpropionate, or
- 5 (or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl) 3-methoxy-carbonylpropionate.
- 3. 6-Hydroxy-2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thiophene.
- 4. An ophthalmic composition for the topical treatment of glaucoma and elevated intraocular pressure comprising an ophthalmologically acceptable carrier and an effective intraocular pressure lowering amount of a compound with structural formula: ##STR41## or an ophthalmologically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R and X are as defined in claim 1.
- 5. An ophthalmic composition for the topical treatment of glaucoma and elevated introcular pressure comprising an ophthalmologically acceptable carrier and an effective intraocular pressure lowering among of a compound with structural formula: ##STR42## or an ophthalmologically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R is in the 5- or 6-position and is HO--, ##STR43## wherein R.sup.1 is C.sub.1-4 alkyl, or ##STR44##
- 6. The composition of claim 5, wherein the compound is:
- 5 (or 6) -hydroxy-2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thiophene;
- 5 (or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl)acetate;
- 5 (or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl) 2,2-dimethyl-propionate;
- 5 (or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl) 2-methyl-propionate; or
- 5 (or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl) 3-methoxy-carbonylpropionate.
- 7. The composition of claim 6 wherein the compound is 6-hydroxy-2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thiophene.
- 8. A method of treating glaucoma and elevated intraocular pressure which comprises topical ocular application to a patient in need of such treatment of an effective intraocular pressure lowering amount of a compound with structural formula: ##STR45## or an ophthalmologically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R and X are as defined in claim 1.
- 9. A method of treating glaucoma and elevated intraocular pressure which comprises topical ocular application to a patient in need of such treatment of an effective intraocular pressure lowering amount of a compound with structural formula: ##STR46## or an ophthalmologically acceptable salt thereof, wherein, R is in the 5- or 6-position and is HO--, ##STR47## wherein R.sup.1 is C.sub.1-4 alkyl, or ##STR48##
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the compound is:
- 5 (or 6) -hydroxy-2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thiophene;
- 5 (or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl) acetate;
- 5(or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl) 2,2-dimethylpropionate;
- 5 (or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl) 2-methyl-propionate; or
- 5 (or 6) -(2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thienyl) 3-methoxy-carbonylpropionate.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the compound is 6-hydroxy-2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thiophene.
