- (5) a connecting body of insulating material which physically secures the heater (1) and the third, fourth and fifth elongate electrical connection means to each other;
- the heater (1) and the third, fourth and fifth elongate electrical connection means being electrically insulated from each other throughout the length of the device.
- 2. A device according to claim 1 wherein each of the first, second, third and fourth connection means is a stranded metal wire.
- 3. A device according to claim 1 wherein the electrical elements(c) comprise an elongate element composed of a melt-extruded conductive polymer which exhibits PTC behavior.
- 4. A device according to claim 1 wherein the self-regulating heater is a zone heater.
- 5. A device according to claim 1 wherein the heater is at least 330 feet long.
- 6. A device according to claim 3 wherein the first and second connection means are metallic wires which are embedded in said elongate element.
- 7. An elongate composite heating device which comprises
- (1) an elongate electrical self-regulating heater comprising
- (a) a first elongate electrical connection means;
- (b) a second elongate electrical connection means; and
- (c) a plurality of electrical heating elements which are connected in parallel between the first and second connection means;
- (2) a third elongate electrical connection means which is a round metal wire or a flat metal strip: and
- (3) a fourth elongate electrical connection means which is a round metal wire or a flat metal strip;
- the elongate heater and the third and fourth elongate electrical connection means being physically secured to, but electrically insulated from, each other throughout the length of the device.
- 8. A device according to claim 7 wherein the electrical elements(c) comprise an elongate element composed of a melt-extruded conductive polymer which exhibits PTC behavior.
- 9. A device according to claim 7 wherein the heater is at least 330 feet long.
- 10. A device according to claim 8 wherein the first and second connection means are metallic wires which are embedded in said elongate element.
- 11. A device according to claim 10 which comprises a fifth elongate electrical connection means which is a metal conductor and which is physically secured to, but electrically insulated from the heater and the third and fourth electrical connection means throughout the length of the device.
- 12. A device according to claim 11 wherein the fifth connection means is smaller than each of the third and fourth connection means.
- 13. An elongate composite heating device which comprises
- (1) an elongate electrical self-regulating heater which comprises
- (a) a first elongate electrical connection means which is an elongate metallic electrode;
- (b) a second elongate electrical connection means which is an elongate metallic electrode; and
- (c) an elongate strip of a melt-extruded conductive polymer exhibiting PTC behavior;
- the first and second connection means being parallel to each other and being embedded in the elongate strip;
- (2) a third elongate electrical connection means which is an elongate metal conductor;
- (3) a fourth elongate electrical connection means which is an elongate metal conductor; and
- (4) a fifth elongate electrical connection means which is an elongate metal conductor;
- the heater and the third, fourth and fifth elongate electrical connection means being separated from each other by electrical insulation and being physically secured together by a connecting body of insulating material throughout the length of the device.
- 14. A device according to claim 13 which is at least 330 feet long.
- 15. A device according to claim 13 wherein the fifth connection means is smaller than each of the third and fourth connection means.
- 16. A device according to claim 13 wherein each of the first and second connection means is a stranded wire.
- 17. A device according to claim 13 wherein each of the first, second, third, fourth and fifth connection means is a stranded wire.
- 18. A device according to claim 13 wherein each of the third, fourth and fifth connection means is a stranded wire which is surrounded by an insulating polymeric jacket throughout the length of the device.
