Claims
- 1. A vaso-occlusive coil deployment system for use in placing a coil at a preselected site within a vessel comprising:
- an elongated flexible catheter comprising a catheter body having a lumen extending therethrough and having a proximal section and a distal section, said distal section of the catheter being formed of a material having a durometer which exhibits the characteristic that when a fluid pressure is applied to the interior of the catheter the walls of the distal section of the catheter expand outwardly;
- a coil being disposed in fluid-tight engagement within the lumen of the distal section of the catheter body;
- a connector hub having a lumen therethrough and disposed on the end of the proximal section of the catheter body;
- a stiffening tube having a proximal end and a distal end and disposed coaxially within the lumen of the catheter body and extending from the proximal section of the catheter body to a location proximal of the distal section of the catheter body; and,
- a helically wound coil disposed between the stiffening tube and the catheter body at the distal end of the stiffening tube and extending beyond the stiffening tube and into the distal section of the catheter body to thereby provide a catheter having a relatively stiff proximal section and a flexible distal section and a transition zone between these sections.
- 2. A vaso-occlusive coil deployment system as defined in claim 1, wherein the outer diameter of the distal portion of the stiffening tube is less than the outer diameter of the proximal portion of the stiffening tube, and the helically wound coil is bonded to the stiffening tube over that portion of the tube having a reduced diameter.
- 3. A vaso-occlusive coil deployment system as defined in claim 2, wherein the stiffening tube is comprised of a metallic tube.
- 4. A vaso-occlusive coil deployment system as defined in claim 3, wherein the stiffening tube is formed of stainless steel.
- 5. A vaso-occlusive coil deployment system as defined in claim 4, wherein the proximal section of the catheter body is formed of a polymer having a durometer of about 75D.
- 6. A vaso-occlusive coil deployment system as defined in claim 5, wherein the distal section of the catheter body is formed of a polymer tubing having a durometer of about 40D.
- 7. A vaso-occlusive coil deployment system as defined in claim 6, wherein the catheter body includes an intermediate section disposed between the proximal section and the distal section and wherein the intermediate section is formed of a polymer having a durometer of about 62D.
- 8. A vaso-occlusive coil deployment system for use in placing a coil at a preselected site within a vessel comprising:
- an elongated flexible catheter comprising a catheter body having a lumen extending therethrough and having a proximal section and a distal section, said distal section of the catheter being formed of a material having a durometer which exhibits the characteristic that when a fluid pressure is applied to the interior of the catheter the walls of the distal section of the catheter expand outwardly;
- a coil being disposed in fluid-tight engagement within the lumen of the distal section of the catheter body;
- a connector hub having a lumen therethrough and disposed on the end of the proximal section of the catheter body;
- a cylindrical stiffening member having a proximal end and a distal end and disposed coaxially within the lumen of the catheter body and extending from the proximal section of the catheter body to a location proximal of the distal section of the catheter body; and,
- a helically wound coil disposed between the cylindrical stiffening member and the catheter body at the distal end of the cylindrical stiffening member and extending beyond the cylindrical stiffening member and into the distal section of the catheter body to thereby provide a catheter having a relatively stiff proximal section and a flexible distal section and a transition zone between these sections.
- 9. A vaso-occlusive coil deployment system as defined in claim 8, wherein the outer diameter of the distal portion of the stiffening member is less than the outer diameter of the proximal portion of the stiffening member, and the helically wound coil is bonded to the stiffening member over that portion of the stiffening member tube having a reduced diameter.
