Claims
- 1. A flexible and extensible electrode array comprising:a flexible substrate sheet comprised of a generally electrically non-conductive material; a plurality of electrically conductive electrodes in supporting connection with a first surface of the substrate sheet, wherein the substrate sheet includes a plurality of perforations therein, wherein the perforations extend in generally surrounding relation of each of the electrodes and enable movement of each of the electrodes relative adjacent portions of the substrate sheet; and a plurality of electrically conductive traces in supporting connection with the substrate sheet, wherein the traces extend to each electrode, wherein the substrate sheet includes a plurality of adjacent pairs of portions of the traces, wherein between each pair, the substrate sheet includes a row of a plurality of separated and longitudinally aligned slits therethrough.
- 2. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 1, wherein the electrically conductive traces are in supporting connection with the first surface of the substrate sheet.
- 3. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 2, wherein the traces are deposited on the substrate sheet.
- 4. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 3, wherein the electrodes are deposited on the substrate sheet.
- 5. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 4, wherein the electrodes and traces are comprised of a conductive ink.
- 6. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 5, wherein the electrodes are comprised of a silver/silver chloride epoxy ink.
- 7. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 6, wherein the traces are comprised of a silver epoxy ink.
- 8. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 2, wherein each of the traces has a width of about 0.05 cm.
- 9. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 4, wherein the electrodes and traces are deposited on the substrate by a silk screening process.
- 10. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 4, wherein the electrodes and traces are fabricated by chemical etching.
- 11. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 4, further comprising a electrically nonconductive material adjacent portions of the traces.
- 12. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 11, wherein the electrically nonconductive material is comprised of a nonconductive ink.
- 13. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 12, wherein the electrically nonconductive material is deposited by a silk screening process.
- 14. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 11, wherein the substrate sheet corresponds to a first substrate sheet, wherein the electrically nonconductive material is a second substrate sheet.
- 15. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 14, wherein the second substrate sheet includes a plurality of apertures, wherein when the second substrate sheet is adjacent the first substrate sheet, the apertures correspond to the positions of the electrodes.
- 16. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 4, wherein a portions of each electrode is deposited over portions of at least one trace, whereby a strong electrical connection between the electrodes and the traces is created.
- 17. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 1, wherein the perforations further extend in generally surrounding relation of portions of the traces connected to each electrode.
- 18. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 1, wherein the substrate sheet includes at least one connection end, wherein a portion of the traces terminate on the connection end of the substrate sheet.
- 19. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 18, wherein the substrate sheet includes a shape that has at least one tail, wherein the connection end is located on the tail, wherein the tail has sufficient length so as to wrap around a portion of the torso of a patient.
- 20. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 18, wherein the ends of the traces that terminate at the connection end include electrically conductive connection points, wherein the array further includes a tail flap in operative connection with the connection end, wherein the tail flap is positioned adjacent the connection points.
- 21. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 20, wherein the tail flap is sufficiently flexible to bend away from the connection points.
- 22. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 1, further comprising an adhesive adjacent the electrodes.
- 23. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 22, wherein the adhesive is electrically conductive.
- 24. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 23, wherein the adhesive includes hydrogel.
- 25. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 24, wherein the adhesive is cured on the electrode.
- 26. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 23, further comprising a cover sheet adjacent the substrate sheet.
- 27. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 26, wherein the cover sheet is releasibly connected to the substrate sheet with the adhesive.
- 28. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 1, wherein the perforations are generally arcuate.
- 29. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 28, wherein the perforations further extend in generally surrounding relation of a stem portion of each electrode.
- 30. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 1, wherein the perforations bound an electrode supporting substrate portion connected to the substrate sheet by at least one stem portion.
- 31. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 30, wherein the traces extend on the stem portion.
- 32. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 1, wherein the substrate sheet is transparent.
- 33. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 1, wherein the substrate is comprised of a polyester film.
- 34. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 1, wherein each electrode has the general shape of a solid circle, wherein the diameter of each electrode is about 1.27 cm.
- 35. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 1, wherein portions of the substrate sheet between separated slits in a first row are longitudinally offset from portions of the substrate sheet between separated slits in a second row adjacent to the first row.
- 36. A flexible and extensible electrode array comprising:a flexible substrate sheet comprised of generally electrically non-conductive material; and a plurality of electrically conductive electrodes in supporting connection with a first surface of the substrate sheet, wherein the substrate sheet includes a plurality of perforations therein, wherein the perforations extend in generally surrounding relation of each of the electrodes and enable movement of each of the electrodes relative adjacent portions of the substrate sheet, wherein the substrate sheet includes a plurality of parallel perforations, whereby the parallel perforations enable the substrate sheet to stretch in more than one direction.
- 37. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 36, wherein the substrate sheet includes a plurality of parallel rows of the parallel perforations, wherein each row includes a plurality of the perforations, wherein in each row the perforations are separated and longitudinally aligned.
- 38. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 37, wherein portions of the substrate sheet between separated perforations in a first row are longitudinally offset from portions of the substrate sheet between separated perforations in a second row adjacent to the first row.
- 39. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 38, wherein the substrate sheet includes a plurality of electrically conductive traces in supporting connection with the substrate sheet, wherein the traces extend to each electrode, wherein the traces extend between each of the rows of perforations.
- 40. A flexible and extensible electrode array comprising:a flexible substrate sheet comprised of generally electrically non-conductive material, wherein the substrate sheet includes a first surface and an opposed second surface; a plurality of electrically conductive electrodes in supporting connection with the first surface of the substrate sheet, wherein the substrate sheet includes a plurality of perforations therein, wherein the perforations extend in generally surrounding relation of each of the electrodes and enable movement of each of the electrodes relative adjacent portions of the substrate sheet; and an electrically conductive adhesive adjacent the electrodes; a cover sheet adjacent the first surface of the substrate sheet, wherein the cover sheet is releasibly connected to the substrate sheet with the adhesive; a release sheet adjacent the second surface of the substrate sheet, wherein the release sheet is in releasable adhesive connection with the substrate sheet.
- 41. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 40, wherein the release sheet has a plurality of apertures therethrough, wherein portions of the release sheet between the apertures are in adhesive connection with the portions of the substrate sheet which support the electrodes.
- 42. A flexible and extensible electrode array comprising:a flexible substrate sheet comprised of generally electrically non-conductive material, wherein the substrate sheet includes a first surface and an opposed second surface; a plurality of electrically conductive electrodes in supporting connection with the first surface of the substrate sheet, wherein the substrate sheet includes a plurality of perforations therein, wherein the perforations extend in generally surrounding relation of each of the electrodes and enable movement of each of the electrodes relative adjacent portions of the substrate sheet; and an electrically conductive adhesive adjacent the electrodes; a cover sheet adjacent the first surface of the substrate sheet, wherein the cover sheet is releasibly connected to the substrate sheet with the adhesive; a release sheet adjacent the second surface of the substrate sheet, wherein the release sheet is in releasable adhesive connection with the substrate sheet, wherein the release sheet has a plurality of rectangular apertures therethrough which form a grid pattern of rows and columns, wherein the grid pattern of rows and columns is adjacent portions of the substrate sheet which support the electrodes.
- 43. A flexible and extensible electrode array comprising:a flexible substrate sheet comprised of generally electrically non-conductive material, wherein the flexible substrate sheet includes opposed first and second side surfaces; a plurality of electrically conductive electrodes in supporting connection with the first side surface of the substrate sheet, wherein the substrate sheet includes a plurality of perforations therein, wherein the perforations extend in generally surrounding relation of each of the electrodes and enable movement of each of the electrodes relative to each other; at least one cover sheet adjacent the first side surface of the substrate sheet, wherein the cover sheet is in releasable adhesive connection with the substrate sheet; and at least one release sheet adjacent the second side surface the substrate sheet, wherein the release sheet is in releasable adhesive connection with portions of the substrate sheet which support the electrodes, whereby while connected to the portions of the substrate sheet which support the electrodes, the release sheet is operative to minimize movement of the electrodes relative to each other.
- 44. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 43, further comprising a plurality of electrically conductive traces in supporting connection with the substrate sheet, wherein the traces extend to each electrode, wherein the substrate sheet includes a plurality of adjacent pairs of portions of the traces, wherein between each pair, the substrate sheet includes a row of a plurality of separated and longitudinally aligned slits therethrough.
- 45. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 44, wherein portions of the substrate sheet between separated slits in a first row are longitudinally offset from portions of the substrate sheet between separated slits in a second row adjacent to the first row.
- 46. The flexible and extensible electrode array according to claim 43, wherein the at least one release sheet has a plurality of apertures therethrough, wherein portions of the at least one release sheet between the apertures are in adhesive connection with the portions of the substrate sheet which support the electrodes.
