Claims
- 1. An electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding gasket comprising:
- a resilient, solid core member of an indefinite length formed of a foamed elastomeric material;
- an electrically conductive fiber mesh member sheathing said core member; and
- a thermoplastic member incorporated within said fiber mesh member, said thermoplastic member consolidating at least a portion of said fiber mesh member effective to maintain the integrity of said fiber mesh member at an end of said gasket when said gasket is terminated to a determinable length.
- 2. The EMI shielding gasket of claim 1 wherein said foamed elastomeric material is selected from the group consisting of polyethylenes, polypropylenes, polypropylene-EPDM blends, butadienes, styrene-butadienes, nitriles, chlorosulfonates, neoprenes, urethanes, silicones, and combinations thereof.
- 3. The EMI shielding gasket of claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic member is formed of a thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyamides, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyvinyl acetate, and combinations thereof.
- 4. The EMI shielding gasket of claim 1 wherein said electrically conductive fiber mesh member is formed of a material selected from the group consisting of: cotton, wool, silk, cellulose, polyester, polyamide, nylon, and polyamide fibers coated with a conductive material wherein said conductive material is copper, nickel, silver, aluminum, tin, carbon, graphite, or a combination thereof; copper, nickel, silver, aluminum, bronze, and tin wire; carbon, graphite, and conductive polymer fibers; and combinations thereof.
- 5. The EMI shielding gasket of claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic member consolidates substantially the entire length of said fiber mesh member.
- 6. The EMI shielding gasket of claim 1 wherein said conductive fiber mesh member is wound over said core member.
- 7. The EMI shielding gasket of claim 6 wherein said fiber mesh member has interlocking loop portions and said thermoplastic member is incorporated only within said loop portions in a generally helical pattern extending circumferentially about said core member.
- 8. The EMI shielding gasket of claim 6 wherein said thermoplastic member is a thermoplastic fiber which has been co-wound with said conductive fiber mesh member over said core member and then melted to consolidate said fiber mesh member.
- 9. The EMI shielding gasket of claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic member is a thermoplastic fiber which is wound over said core member, and wherein said conductive fiber mesh member is wound over said thermoplastic fiber, said thermoplastic fiber then being melted to consolidate said fiber mesh member.
- 10. The EMI shielding gasket of claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic member is a thermoplastic film which is wrapped over said core member, and wherein said conductive fiber mesh member is wound over said thermoplastic film, said thermoplastic film then being melted to consolidate said fiber mesh member.
- 11. The EMI shielding gasket of claim 1 wherein said fiber mesh member has interlocking loop portions and said thermoplastic member is incorporated only within said loop portions in a generally helical pattern extending circumferentially about said core member.
- 12. An electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding gasket comprising:
- a resilient, solid core member of an indefinite length formed of a foamed elastomeric material;
- an electrically conductive fiber mesh member wound over and sheathing said core member; and
- a thermoplastic member incorporated within said fiber mesh member, said thermoplastic member consolidating at least a portion of said fiber mesh member effective to maintain the integrity of said fiber mesh member at an end of said gasket when said gasket is terminated to a determinable length, wherein said thermoplastic member is thermoplastic film which has been wrapped over said fiber mesh member only at said end of said gasket and then melted to consolidate said fiber mesh member only at said end of said gasket.
