Claims
- 1. A method for treating or preventing infection following treatment for a hematologic malignancy, comprising administering a compound of formula I, or a pharmaceutical composition thereof, to a patient receiving treatment for said hematologic malignancy, formula I being represented by: ##STR9## wherein R.sub.1 is substantially an R enantiomer .omega.-1 secondary alcohol-substituted C.sub.5-8 alkyl wherein R.sub.2 is C.sub.1-12 alkyl, optionally containing one or two nonadjacent oxygen atoms in place of a carbon atom, and R.sub.3 is CH.sub.3 or H.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said treatment for the hematologic malignancy is selected from the group consisting of cytotoxic agents, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and bone marrow transplantation.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the patient receives transplanted bone marrow from a donor selected from the group consisting of (i) an HLA-identical related donor or (ii) a person unrelated to the patient.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the infection results from a microbial agent.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the treating or preventing infection decreases the incidence or severity of mucositis in the patient.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the treating or preventing infection decreases the incidence or severity of failure in the gastrointestinal barrier.
- 7. A method for treating or preventing hematocytopenia following administration of therapies to treat hematologic malignancies, comprising administering a compound of formula I, or a pharmaceutical composition thereof, formula I being represented by: ##STR10## wherein R.sub.1 is substantially an R enantiomer .omega.-1 secondary alcohol-substituted C.sub.5-8 alkyl wherein R.sub.2 is C.sub.1-12 alkyl, optionally containing one or two nonadjacent oxygen atoms in place of a carbon atom, and R.sub.3 is CH.sub.3 or H.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the treating hematocytopenia enhances hematopoietic recovery.
- 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the enhancing hematopoietic recovery promotes differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells into red blood cells, platelets, granulocytes and lymphocytes.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the granulocyte is leukocyte.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the leukocyte is a neutrophil, basophil or eosinophil.
- 12. The method of claim 7, wherein the hematocytopenia is neutropenia.
