Claims
- 1. An end cut tool for making an end cut in bone comprising:A) a shaft having first and second ends, 1) said first end having a blade attached thereto substantially perpendicular to the axis of said shaft for making said end cut in said bone, and 2) said second end having a handle attached thereto substantially perpendicular to the axis of said shaft to facilitate rotation of said shaft, and B) at least one interlock located between said first and second ends, said interlock preventing rotation of said blade during insertion into a patient and further preventing withdrawal of said tool during rotation.
- 2. The tool of claim 1 wherein the bone is at least one vertebra.
- 3. The tool of claim 2 wherein the blade is configured to make end cuts in a first vertebra and in a second vertebra simultaneously.
- 4. The tool of claim 3 wherein said first and second vertebrae are each adjacent to a space left by surgically removed spinal tissue.
- 5. The tool of claim 1 wherein the shaft is substantially cylindrical.
- 6. The tool of claim 1 further comprising a depth stop on said shaft between said blade and said handle.
- 7. The tool of claim 1 wherein the interlocking means comprises a spring-held interlock that engages a slot in said shaft thereby preventing rotation of said tool.
- 8. An end cut tool for making an end cut in each of two vertebrae, each of said vertebrae being adjacent to a space left by surgically removed spinal tissue, said tool comprising:A) a substantially cylindrical shaft having first and second ends, 1) said first end having a blade attached thereto for making said end cuts in said vertebrae, and 2) said second end having a handle attached thereto substantially perpendicular to the axis of said shaft to facilitate rotation of said shaft; and B) interlocking means comprising a spring-held interlock that engages a slot in said shaft located between said first and second ends for preventing rotation of said blade during insertion into a patient and then preventing withdrawal of said tool during use; and C) a depth stop on said shaft between said first and second ends.
- 9. A surgical device comprising the combination ofI) an end cut tool for making an end cut in bone comprising: A) a shaft having first and second ends, 1) said first end having a blade attached thereto substantially perpendicular to the axis of said shaft for making said end cut in said bone, and 2) said second end having a handle attached thereto substantially perpendicular to the axis of said shaft to facilitate rotation of said shaft; and B) interlocking means located between said first and second ends for preventing rotation of said blade during insertion into a patient and further preventing withdrawal of said tool during rotation; and II) a guide comprising a tube having a first end and a second end, said tube being configured for insertable acceptance of said shaft of said tool and having tangs extending from one end thereof.
- 10. The device of claim 9 wherein the bone is at least one vertebra.
- 11. The device of claim 10 wherein the blade is configured to make end cuts in a first vertebra and in a second vertebra simultaneously.
- 12. The device of claim 11 wherein said first and second vertebrae are each adjacent to a space left by surgically removed spinal tissue.
- 13. The device of claim 12 wherein the tangs are adapted for insertion between the vertebrae to distract said vertebrae to a preferred dimension.
- 14. The device of claim 13 wherein the tangs are tapered to conform to natural lordosis.
- 15. The device of claim 13 further comprising a depth stop on said shaft between said blade and said handle.
- 16. The device of claim 9 wherein the shaft is substantially cylindrical.
- 17. The device of claim 9 further comprising a depth stop on said shaft between said blade and said handle.
- 18. The device of claim 9 wherein the interlocking means comprises a spring-held interlock that engages a slot in said shaft and that is rotated out of said slot when said tool is inserted into said guide.
- 19. A surgical device comprising the combination ofI) a tool for making end cuts in each of two vertebrae, each of said vertebrae being adjacent to a space left by surgically removed spinal tissue, said tool comprising: A) a substantially cylindrical shaft having first and second ends, 1) said first end having a blade attached thereto substantially perpendicular to the axis of said shaft for making said end cuts in said vertebrae, and 2) said second end having a handle attached thereto substantially perpendicular to the axis of said shaft to facilitate rotation of said shaft; and B) interlocking means located between said first and second ends comprising a spring-held interlock that engages a slot in said shaft and that is rotated out of said slot when said tool is inserted into said guide for preventing rotation of said blade during insertion into a patient and further preventing withdrawal of said tool during; and C) a depth stop on said shaft between said first and second ends; II) a guide comprising a tube having a first and second end, said tube being configured for insertable acceptance of said shaft of said tool and having tangs tapered to conform to natural lordosis extending from one end thereof adapted for insertion between the vertebrae to distract said vertebrae to a preferred dimension.
