Claims
- 1. A surgical instrument adapted for insertion through a trocar tube, comprising:
- a) an elongated tube having a longitudinal axis, proximal and distal ends and an outer surface;
- b) electrically insulating shrink wrap covering a portion of said outer surface of said tube other than said proximal end of said tube;
- c) at least one end effector member of a grasping, cutting, clamping, dissecting, or extracting type, said end effector member being operatively connected to said hollow metal tube;
- d) an actuating member operatively coupled to said end effector through said tube, said actuating member having a housing with a distal portion closely surrounding said covering said proximal end of said tube, wherein said outer surface of said tube is exposed intermediate said shrink wrap covered portion of said tube and said distal portion of said housing;
- e) an indicating ferrule member extending over said exposed outer surface of said tube and over said distal portion of said housing, said ferrule member being of predetermined color to indicate what said type of end effector member is operatively coupled to said hollow metal tube.
- 2. A surgical instrument according to claim 1, wherein:
- said ferrule member is coupled to at least one of said tube and said housing.
- 3. A surgical instrument according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a clevis member operatively connected between said tube and said at least one end effector to impart pivotal motion to said at least one end effector member upon actuation of said actuating member.
- 4. A surgical instrument according to claim 3, wherein:
- said at least one end effector includes first and second holes therein and said clevis member includes a pivot member thereon which extends through said first hole on said at least one end effector, and
- said actuating member is operatively coupled by an elongate rod member having distal and proximal end portions thereon wherein said distal end portion includes a third hole thereon which is operatively connected to said second hole on said at least one end effector by a connector member which extends therebetween and said first and third holes are aligned along said longitudinal axis of said tube.
- 5. A surgical instrument for insertion through a trocar tube, comprising:
- a) an elongated tube having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion and a longitudinal axis;
- b) a clevis member mechanically coupled to said distal end portion of said tube, said clevis member having first means for rotation thereon;
- c) at least one end effector member for grasping, cutting, clamping, dissecting, or extracting, said at least one end effector member having a first hole for receiving said first means for rotation and for operatively engaging said first means for rotation on said clevis member, and a second hole proximally of said first hole;
- d) a rod extending at least partially through said tube and having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion, said rod having a third hole on said distal end portion thereof;
- e) a connecting member operatively linking said distal end portion of said rod with said at least one end effector member having said first and second holes to impart pivotal motion to said at least one end effector member, wherein,
- f) said first hole of said at least one end effector member and said third hole of said rod are aligned along said longitudinal axis of said tube and said connector member is operatively connected between said second hole of said at least one end effector member and said third hole of said rod.
- 6. A surgical instrument according to claim 5, further comprising:
- a ferrule member generally adjacent said proximal end portion of said tube with said ferrule member being of a predetermined color to indicate said type of said at least one end effector member that is operatively connected to said tube.
- 7. A surgical instrument according to claim 5, wherein:
- said at least one end effector consists of a pair of end effectors, and
- each of said end effectors has first and second holes therein wherein said first holes receive said first means for rotation on said clevis member therein and said second holes are operatively connected to said third hole on said rod by separate connecting members.
- 8. A surgical instrument for insertion through a trocar tube comprising:
- a) an elongated tube having distal and proximal end portions, and a longitudinal axis thereon;
- b) a clevis member operatively connected to said distal end portion of said tube, said clevis member having a hollow bore opening therethrough in communication with said tube and a pair of parallel, spaced apart, opposed arms extending distally of said tube and being substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis of said tube;
- c) a pivot member extending substantially, transversely between said arms and engaging said arms, said pivot member having a first diameter;
- d) an end effector member operatively connected to said clevis member and having a through-hole through which said pivot member extends, said through-hole having a second diameter larger than said first diameter of said pivot member which permits pivotal movement of said end effector member about said pivot member and which permits limited angular displacement of said end effector member relative to said pivot member as said end effector member is inserted through the trocar tube.
- 9. A surgical instrument according to claim 8, further comprising:
- a pair of end effector members each having through holes therein to receive said pivot member therethrough and separate second holes therein; and
- a rod member extending through said tube and clevis member wherein said rod member includes distal and proximal end portions thereon and said distal end portion includes a third hole thereon, wherein
- said first and third holes are aligned with said longitudinal axis of said tube.
- 10. A surgical instrument according to claim 9, wherein:
- said end effector is movable between a first position wherein said second hole is generally aligned with said longitudinal axis of said tube and a second position wherein said second hole is spaced apart from said longitudinal axis of said tube.
- 11. A surgical instrument according to claim 8, further comprising:
- a ferrule member generally adjacent said proximal end portion of said tube, said ferrule member being of a predetermined color to indicate the type of said end effector member operatively associated with said clevis member.
- 12. A single acting scissors for insertion through a trocar tube, comprising:
- a) an elongated tube having a distal end portion and a proximal end, and a longitudinal axis;
- b) a clevis member operatively coupled to said distal end portion of said tube, said clevis member including a pivot member operatively connected to a distal end portion thereof;
- c) a first scissors blade element having a proximal base section and a distal cutting section, said base section having a pivot hole pivotally engaging said pivot member of said clevis member, and a second through-hole in said base section of said first scissors blade element;
- d) a second scissors blade element fixedly connected to said clevis member;
- e) an elongated rod extending through said tube and having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion, said distal end portion of said rod having a distally located terminal portion angled relative to said longitudinal axis of said tube and engaging said second through-hole of said base section of said first scissors blade element; and
- f) an actuating member operatively engaging said proximal end portion of said rod which moves said rod longitudinally relative to said tube which is translated at said clevis member to pivotal motion of said first scissors blade element.
- 13. A scissors according to claim 12, wherein:
- said proximal end portion of said rod and said pivot hole of said first blade element are aligned with said longitudinal axis of said tube and said first blade element is movable between a first position wherein said second hole is generally aligned with said longitudinal axis of said tube and a second position wherein said second hole is spaced apart from said longitudinal axis of said tube.
