Claims
- 1. A four cycle engine for use in a vehicle having a longitudinal axis, comprising:
a crankcase having a crankshaft extending therethrough, wherein the crankshaft has a crankshaft axis, wherein the crankshaft axis is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle; at least one cylinder unit connected to the crankcase, wherein each cylinder unit includes a cylinder and a cylinder head; a continuously variable transmission connected to the engine on one side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, wherein the continuously variable transmission is driven by the crankshaft; at least one auxiliary unit connected to the crankcase; and a drive gearing operatively connected to the crankcase, wherein the drive gearing includes a toothed wheel gearing, wherein the drive gearing being operatively connected to at least one of the at least one auxiliary unit, wherein the at least one auxiliary unit being located on a side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle opposite to the continuously variable transmission.
- 2. The engine according to claim 1, further comprising a starter operatively connected to the drive gearing, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis, wherein the starter has a center of gravity and the center of gravity being located to the rear side of the engine.
- 3. The engine according to claim 1, wherein the at least one auxiliary unit includes at least one of a generator, an alternator, a water pump, an oil pump, and a charger.
- 4. The engine according to claim 3, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis.
- 5. The engine according to claim 4, wherein one auxiliary unit is a generator, wherein the generator has a center of gravity, wherein the center of gravity of the generator being located on the rear side of the engine behind the axis of the crankshaft.
- 6. The engine according to claim 4, wherein one auxiliary unit is a charger, wherein the charger is a supercharger having a center of gravity, wherein the center of gravity of the supercharger being located on the rear side of the engine behind the axis of the crankshaft.
- 7. The engine according to claim 6, the supercharger being located on one side of a cylinder unit located on the rear side of the engine.
- 8. The engine according to claim 6, further comprising a charge-air cooler operatively connected to the supercharger, wherein the charge-air cooler being arranged on the front side of the engine.
- 9. The engine according to claim 4, wherein one auxiliary unit is a charger, wherein the charger is a turbocharger having an impeller, wherein the impeller has an axis, wherein the axis of the impeller is located on the rear side of the engine behind the crankshaft.
- 10. The engine according to claim 9, further comprising a charge-air cooler operatively connected to the turbocharger, wherein the charge-air cooler being arranged on the front side of the engine.
- 11. The engine according to claim 9, further comprising a deflector assembly connected to an intake side of the turbocharger, whereby the direction of a flow of air is changed in the deflector assembly before entering the turbocharger.
- 12. The engine according to claim 1, wherein the vehicle includes a steering rod, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis, wherein one of the cylinder units is located on the rear side of the engine adjacent the steering rod and laterally offset from the same.
- 13. The engine according to claim 12, wherein the cylinder unit located on the rear side of the engine has a cylinder axis, wherein a first angle is formed by the cylinder axis and a vertical axis, wherein a second angle is formed by the steering rod and the vertical axis, wherein the first angle is greater than the second angle.
- 14. The engine according to claim 12, wherein one of the cylinder units being located on the front side of the engine, wherein the one cylinder unit on the front side being located closer to the longitudinal axis than the cylinder unit on the rear side.
- 15. The engine according to claim 1, further comprising:
an oil tank for receiving at least a portion of the engine lubricant, wherein the oil tank is mounted to the crankcase on one side of the longitudinal axis between the crankcase and the continuously variable transmission.
- 16. The engine according to claim 15, wherein the crankshaft extends through an opening in the oil tank.
- 17. The engine according to claim 1, wherein the toothed-wheel gearing is located within a secondary housing connected to the crankcase.
- 18. The engine according to claim 5, further comprising:
a muffler system, wherein the muffler system being located on an opposite side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle relative to the continuously variable transmission.
- 19. A single cylinder four cycle engine for use in a vehicle having a longitudinal axis, comprising:
a crankcase having a crankshaft extending therethrough, wherein the crankshaft has a crankshaft axis, wherein the crankshaft axis is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle; a cylinder unit connected to the crankcase, wherein the cylinder unit includes a cylinder and a cylinder head; a continuously variable transmission connected to the engine on one side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, wherein the continuously variable transmission is driven by the crankshaft; at least one auxiliary unit connected to the crankcase; and a drive gearing operatively connected to the crankcase, wherein the drive gearing includes a toothed wheel gearing, wherein the drive gearing being operatively connected to at least one of the at least one auxiliary unit, wherein the at least one auxiliary unit being located on a side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle opposite to the continuously variable transmission.
- 20. The engine according to claim 19, further comprising a starter operatively connected to the drive gearing, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis, wherein the starter has a center of gravity and the center of gravity being located to the rear side of the engine.
- 21. The engine according to claim 19, wherein the at least one auxiliary unit includes at least one of a generator, an alternator, a water pump, an oil pump, and a charger.
- 22. The engine according to claim 21, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis.
- 23. The engine according to claim 22, wherein one auxiliary unit is a generator, wherein the generator has a center of gravity, wherein the center of gravity of the generator being located on the rear side of the engine behind the axis of the crankshaft.
- 24. The engine according to claim 22, wherein one auxiliary unit is a charger, wherein the charger is a supercharger having a center of gravity, wherein the center of gravity of the supercharger being located on the rear side of the engine behind the axis of the crankshaft.
- 25. The engine according to claim 23, the supercharger being located on one side of the cylinder unit located on the rear side of the engine.
- 26. The engine according to claim 24, further comprising a charge-air cooler operatively connected to the supercharger, wherein the charge-air cooler being arranged on the front side of the engine.
- 27. The engine according to claim 22, wherein one auxiliary unit is a charger, wherein the charger is a turbocharger having an impeller, wherein the impeller has an axis, wherein the axis of the impeller is located on the rear side of the engine behind the crankshaft.
- 28. The engine according to claim 27, further comprising a charge-air cooler operatively connected to the turbocharger, wherein the charge-air cooler being arranged on the front side of the engine.
- 29. The engine according to claim 27, further comprising a deflector assembly connected to an intake side of the turbocharger, whereby the direction of a flow of air is changed in the deflector assembly before entering the turbocharger.
- 30. The engine according to claim 18, wherein the vehicle includes a steering rod, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis, wherein the cylinder unit is located on the rear side of the engine adjacent the steering rod and laterally offset from the same.
- 31. The engine according to claim 30, wherein the cylinder unit has a cylinder axis, wherein a first angle is formed by the cylinder axis and a vertical axis, wherein a second angle is formed by the steering rod and the vertical axis, wherein the first angle is greater than the second angle.
- 32. The engine according to claim 30, further comprising a balance shaft located on the front side of the engine, wherein the balance shaft is arranged substantially parallel to the crankshaft.
- 33. The engine according to claim 19, further comprising:
an oil tank for receiving at least a portion of the engine lubricant, wherein the oil tank is mounted to the crankcase on one side of the longitudinal axis between the crankcase and the continuously variable transmission.
- 34. The engine according to claim 33, wherein the crankshaft extends through an opening in the oil tank.
- 35. The engine according to claim 19, wherein the toothed-wheel gearing is located within a secondary housing connected to the crankcase.
- 36. The engine according to claim 23, further comprising:
a muffler system, wherein the muffler system being located an opposite side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle relative to the continuously variable transmission.
- 37. A multi-cylinder four cycle engine for use in a vehicle having a longitudinal axis, comprising:
a crankcase having a crankshaft extending therethrough, wherein the crankshaft has a crankshaft axis, wherein the crankshaft axis is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle; at least two cylinder units connected to the crankcase, wherein each cylinder unit includes a cylinder and a cylinder head; a continuously variable transmission connected to the engine on one side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, wherein the continuously variable transmission is driven by the crankshaft; at least one auxiliary unit connected to the crankcase; and a drive gearing operatively connected to the crankcase, wherein the drive gearing includes a toothed wheel gearing, wherein the drive gearing being operatively connected to at least one of the at least one auxiliary unit, wherein the at least one auxiliary unit being located on a side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle opposite to the continuously variable transmission.
- 38. The engine according to claim 37, further comprising a starter operatively connected to the drive gearing, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis, wherein the starter has a center of gravity and the center of gravity being located to the rear side of the engine.
- 39. The engine according to claim 37, wherein the at least one auxiliary unit includes at least one of a generator, an alternator, a water pump, an oil pump, and a charger.
- 40. The engine according to claim 39, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis.
- 41. The engine according to claim 40, wherein one auxiliary unit is a generator, wherein the generator has a center of gravity, wherein the center of gravity of the generator being located on the rear side of the engine behind the axis of the crankshaft.
- 42. The engine according to claim 40, wherein one auxiliary unit is a charger, wherein the charger is a supercharger having a center of gravity, wherein the center of gravity of the supercharger being located on the rear side of the engine behind the axis of the crankshaft.
- 43. The engine according to claim 42, the supercharger being located on one side of a cylinder unit located on the rear side of the engine.
- 44. The engine according to claim 42, further comprising a charge-air cooler operatively connected to the supercharger, wherein the charge-air cooler being arranged on the front side of the engine.
- 45. The engine according to claim 40, wherein one auxiliary unit is a charger, wherein the charger is a turbocharger having an impeller, wherein the impeller has an axis, wherein the axis of the impeller is located on the rear side of the engine behind the crankshaft.
- 46. The engine according to claim 45, further comprising a charge-air cooler operatively connected to the turbocharger, wherein the charge-air cooler being arranged on the front side of the engine.
- 47. The engine according to claim 45, further comprising a deflector assembly connected to an intake side of the turbocharger, whereby the direction of a flow of air is changed in the deflector assembly before entering the turbocharger.
- 48. The engine according to claim 37, wherein the vehicle includes a steering rod, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis, wherein one of the cylinder units is located on the rear side of the engine adjacent the steering rod and laterally offset from the same.
- 49. The engine according to claim 48, wherein the cylinder unit located on the rear side of the engine has a cylinder axis, wherein a first angle is formed by the cylinder axis and a vertical axis, wherein a second angle is formed by the steering rod and the vertical axis, wherein the first angle is greater than the second angle.
- 50. The engine according to claim 49, wherein one of the cylinder units being located on the front side of the engine, wherein the one cylinder unit on the front side being located closer to the longitudinal axis than the cylinder unit on the rear side.
- 51. The engine according to claim 37, further comprising:
an oil tank for receiving at least a portion of the engine lubricant, wherein the oil tank is mounted to the crankcase on one side of the longitudinal axis between the crankcase and the continuously variable transmission.
- 52. The engine according to claim 51, wherein the crankshaft extends through an opening in the oil tank.
- 53. The engine according to claim 37, wherein the toothed-wheel gearing is located within a secondary housing connected to the crankcase.
- 54. The engine according to claim 37, further comprising:
a muffler system, wherein the muffler system being located on an opposite side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle relative to the continuously variable transmission.
- 55. A vehicle, comprising:
a vehicle frame having a longitudinal axis; and a four cycle engine secured to the vehicle frame, wherein the engine comprising:
a crankcase having a crankshaft extending therethrough, wherein the crankshaft has a crankshaft axis, wherein the crankshaft axis is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle; at least one cylinder unit connected to the crankcase, wherein each cylinder unit includes a cylinder and a cylinder head; a continuously variable transmission connected to the engine on one side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, wherein the continuously variable transmission is driven by the crankshaft; at least one auxiliary unit connected to the crankcase; and a drive gearing operatively connected to the crankcase, wherein the drive gearing includes a toothed wheel gearing, wherein the drive gearing being operatively connected to at least one of the at least one auxiliary unit, wherein the at least one auxiliary unit being located on a side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle opposite to the continuously variable transmission.
- 56. The vehicle according to claim 55, further comprising a starter operatively connected to the drive gearing, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis, wherein the starter has a center of gravity and the center of gravity being located to the rear side of the engine.
- 57. The vehicle according to claim 55, wherein the at least one auxiliary unit includes at least one of a generator, an alternator, a water pump, an oil pump, and a charger.
- 58. The vehicle according to claim 57, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis.
- 59. The vehicle according to claim 58, wherein one auxiliary unit is a generator, wherein the generator has a center of gravity, wherein the center of gravity of the generator being located on the rear side of the engine behind the axis of the crankshaft.
- 60. The vehicle according to claim 58, wherein one auxiliary unit is a charger, wherein the charger is a supercharger having a center of gravity, wherein the center of gravity of the supercharger being located on the rear side of the engine behind the axis of the crankshaft.
- 61. The vehicle according to claim 60, the supercharger being located on one side of a cylinder unit located on the rear side of the engine.
- 62. The vehicle according to claim 60, further comprising a charge-air cooler operatively connected to the supercharger, wherein the charge-air cooler being arranged on the front side of the engine.
- 63. The vehicle according to claim 58, wherein one auxiliary unit is a charger, wherein the charger is a turbocharger having an impeller, wherein the impeller has an axis, wherein the axis of the impeller is located on the rear side of the engine behind the crankshaft.
- 64. The vehicle according to claim 63, further comprising a charge-air cooler operatively connected to the turbocharger, wherein the charge-air cooler being arranged on the front side of the engine.
- 65. The vehicle according to claim 63, further comprising a deflector assembly connected to an intake side of the turbocharger, whereby the direction of a flow of air is changed in the deflector assembly before entering the turbocharger.
- 66. The vehicle according to claim 55, further comprising a steering rod, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis, wherein one of the cylinder units is located on the rear side of the engine adjacent the steering rod and laterally offset from the same.
- 67. The vehicle according to claim 66, wherein the cylinder unit located on the rear side of the engine has a cylinder axis, wherein a first angle is formed by the cylinder axis and a vertical axis, wherein a second angle is formed by the steering rod and the vertical axis, wherein the first angle is greater than the second angle.
- 68. The vehicle according to claim 66, wherein one of the cylinder units being located on the front side of the engine, wherein the one cylinder unit on the front side being located closer to the longitudinal axis than the cylinder unit on the rear side.
- 69. The vehicle according to claim 55, further comprising:
an oil tank for receiving at least a portion of the engine lubricant, wherein the oil tank is mounted to the crankcase on one side of the longitudinal axis between the crankcase and the continuously variable transmission.
- 70. The vehicle according to claim 69, wherein the crankshaft extends through an opening in the oil tank.
- 71. The vehicle according to claim 55, wherein the toothed-wheel gearing is located within a secondary housing connected to the crankcase.
- 72. The vehicle according to claim 55, further comprising:
a muffler system, wherein the muffler system being located on an opposite side of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle relative to the continuously variable transmission.
- 73. A snowmobile, comprising:
a snowmobile frame having a longitudinal axis; a four cycle engine secured to the snowmobile frame, wherein the engine comprising:
a crankcase having a crankshaft extending therethrough, wherein the crankshaft has a crankshaft axis, wherein the crankshaft axis is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the snowmobile; at least one cylinder unit connected to the crankcase, wherein each cylinder unit includes a cylinder and a cylinder head; a continuously variable transmission connected to the engine on one side of the longitudinal axis of the snowmobile, wherein the continuously variable transmission is driven by the crankshaft; at least one auxiliary unit connected to the crankcase; and a drive gearing operatively connected to the crankcase, wherein the drive gearing includes a toothed wheel gearing, wherein the drive gearing being operatively connected to at least one of the at least one auxiliary unit, wherein the at least one auxiliary unit being located on a side of the longitudinal axis of the snowmobile opposite to the continuously variable transmission; and a track operatively connected to the frame and driven by the engine.
- 74. The snowmobile according to claim 73, further comprising a starter operatively connected to the drive gearing, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis, wherein the starter has a center of gravity and the center of gravity being located to the rear side of the engine.
- 75. The snowmobile according to claim 73, wherein the at least one auxiliary unit includes at least one of a generator, an alternator, a water pump, an oil pump, and a charger.
- 76. The snowmobile according to claim 75, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis.
- 77. The snowmobile according to claim 76, wherein one auxiliary unit is a generator, wherein the generator has a center of gravity, wherein the center of gravity of the generator being located on the rear side of the engine behind the axis of the crankshaft.
- 78. The snowmobile according to claim 76, wherein one auxiliary unit is a charger, wherein the charger is a supercharger having a center of gravity, wherein the center of gravity of the supercharger being located on the rear side of the engine behind the axis of the crankshaft.
- 79. The snowmobile according to claim 78, the supercharger being located on one side of a cylinder unit located on the rear side of the engine.
- 80. The snowmobile according to claim 78, further comprising a charge-air cooler operatively connected to the supercharger, wherein the charge-air cooler being arranged on the front side of the engine.
- 81. The snowmobile according to claim 78, wherein one auxiliary unit is a charger, wherein the charger is a turbocharger having an impeller, wherein the impeller has an axis, wherein the axis of the impeller is located on the rear side of the engine behind the crankshaft.
- 82. The snowmobile according to claim 81, further comprising a charge-air cooler operatively connected to the turbocharger, wherein the charge-air cooler being arranged on the front side of the engine.
- 83. The snowmobile according to claim 81, further comprising a deflector assembly connected to an intake side of the turbocharger, whereby the direction of a flow of air is changed in the deflector assembly before entering the turbocharger.
- 84. The snowmobile according to claim 73, further comprising a steering rod, wherein the engine includes a front side located on one side of the crankshaft axis and a rear side located on an opposite side of the crankshaft axis, wherein one of the cylinder units is located on the rear side of the engine adjacent the steering rod and laterally offset from the same.
- 85. The snowmobile according to claim 84, wherein the cylinder unit located on the rear side of the engine has a cylinder axis, wherein a first angle is formed by the cylinder axis and a vertical axis, wherein a second angle is formed by the steering rod and the vertical axis, wherein the first angle is greater than the second angle.
- 86. The snowmobile according to claim 84, wherein one of the cylinder units being located on the front side of the engine, wherein the one cylinder unit on the front side being located closer to the longitudinal axis than the cylinder unit on the rear side.
- 87. The snowmobile according to claim 73, further comprising:
an oil tank for receiving at least a portion of the engine lubricant, wherein the oil tank is mounted to the crankcase on one side of the longitudinal axis between the crankcase and the continuously variable transmission.
- 88. The snowmobile according to claim 87, wherein the crankshaft extends through an opening in the oil tank.
- 89. The snowmobile according to claim 73, wherein the toothed-wheel gearing is located within a secondary housing connected to the crankcase.
- 90. The snowmobile according to claim 73, further comprising:
a muffler system, wherein the muffler system being located on an opposite side of the longitudinal axis of the snowmobile relative to the continuously variable transmission.
