Claims
- 1. In a performance monitoring system for engines having one or more cylinders adapted to receive fuel injected from a pump through a line and wherein said fuel line is normally terminated at one or more of its ends in a fitting which is sealed by a nut which surrounds the line, a transducer assembly for developing an electrical signal in response to fuel pressure tending to separate the fuel line from said fitting comprising a nut-shaped housing having a first cutaway portion extending axially along one side thereof to allow said housing to be placed around the fuel line, a stress responsive transducer material coupled to said housing for producing an output signal in response to mechanical stress on said housing, said transducer assembly being adapted to replace the nut on said line in coupling said line into sealing engagement with said fitting.
- 2. In a performance monitoring system a transducer assembly according to claim 1 wherein said nut-shaped housing has a second opening therein for housing said transducer material and wherein said transducer material is a platelike member substantially circular in form and bonded to at least one lateral surface of said housing.
- 3. In a performance monitoring system for engines having one or more cylinders adapted to receive fuel injected from a pump through a line and wherein at least one end of said fuel line is normally terminated in a fitting, a transducer assembly for developing an electrical signal in response to fuel pressure tending to separate the fuel line from said fitting comprising: a substantially nut-shaped housing having means for holding said line in engagement with said fitting against forces acting axially on said line, and a transducer of stress responsive material coupled to said housing and having electrical terminal means for producing an output signal in response to mechanical stress on said housing resulting from fuel pressure within said line.
- 4. In a performance monitoring system a transducer assembly according to claim 3 wherein said nut-shaped housing has an opening therein for receiving said transducer material and wherein said transducer material is a platelike member substantially circular in form and bonded to at least one lateral surface of said housing which is normal to the axis of said fuel line.
- 5. In a performance monitoring system a transducer assembly according to claim 4 wherein said stress responsive material is in the form of a piezoelectric slab having one face electrically and mechanically bonded to said housing and another face insulated from said housing and coupled to said output terminal means.
- 6. A transducer assembly for a vehicle fuel line which is normally terminated at one or more of its ends in a compression fitting, said transducer assembly being adapted to develop an electrical signal in response to fuel pressure tending to separate the fuel line from said fitting and comprising: a housing threaded to intermate with said fitting and having means for holding said fuel line in engagement with said fitting, and a stress responsive transducer coupled to said housing and having electrical terminal means for producing an output signal in response to mechanical stress on said housing resulting from fuel pressure within the line.
- 7. A transducer assembly for a vehicle fuel line in accordance with claim 6 wherein said stress responsive transducer material is a piezoelectric slab adapted to substantially surround said fuel line and wherein said slab is electrically bonded to said housing by a conductive adhesive on one face thereof, the other face of said slab developing an electrical potential relative to said one face in response to mechanical stress exerted on said slab through said housing.
- 8. A transducer assembly for a vehicle fuel line in accordance with claim 7 further including a dielectric material extending over said potential-developing slab surface within said housing so as to insulate said surface from the housing.
- 9. In a performance monitoring system for engines having one or more cylinders adapted to receive fuel injected from a pump through a line and wherein at least one end of said fuel line is normally terminated in a fitting, the combination comprising:
- a transducer assembly for developing an electrical signal in response to fuel pressure tending to separate the fuel line from said fitting, said transducer assembly having a housing threaded to intermate with said fitting and having means for holding said fuel line in engagement with said fitting, and a transducer of stress responsive material coupled to said housing for producing an output pulse upon injection of fuel into said line by said pump;
- electrical circuit means for processing said pulses and
- read-out means coupled to said circuit means for displaying information related to the timing of said engine.
- 10. In a performance monitoring system the combination according to claim 9 wherein said pulse processing circuit is an integrator and said read-out means is a tachometer for indicating the speed of the engine.
