Claims
- 1. A method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications between wireless handsets, the wireless handsets comprising an originating handset and a receiving handset, the method comprising:
transmitting a call request from the originating handset to the receiving handset; negotiating a channel for supporting direct handset-to-handset communications between the originating handset and the receiving handset; determining, after successfully negotiating the channel for supporting the direct handset-to-handset communications, whether the call request from the originating handset is accepted by the receiving handset; and establishing, when it is determined that the call request was accepted by the receiving handset, the direct handset-to-handset communications between the originating handset and the receiving handset over the negotiated channel.
- 2. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 1, the method further comprising monitoring a registry channel to determine if the receiving handset is within range of the originating handset, the transmitting comprising transmitting the call request to the receiving handset only when it is determined that the receiving handset is within range of the originating handset.
- 3. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 2, wherein the transmitting further comprises transmitting the call request to the receiving handset over the registry channel.
- 4. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 1, wherein the transmitting further comprises transmitting the call request to the receiving handset over a dedicated control channel.
- 5. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 1, wherein the transmitting further comprises transmitting a call waiting request to the receiving handset when the receiving handset is on a call with another handset.
- 6. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 5, the method further comprising determining if the receiving handset accepts the call waiting request and transmitting, when it is determined that the receiving handset has accepted the call waiting request, a hold request to the another handset so that the another handset is placed on hold.
- 7. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 1, wherein the negotiating further comprises:
selecting a proposed channel for supporting the direct handset-to-handset communications; transmitting the proposed channel to the receiving handset; determining if the receiving handset confirms the proposed channel as being suitable for supporting the direct handset-to-handset communications; and designating, when it is determined that the proposed channel is confirmed by the receiving channel, the proposed channel as the negotiated channel for the direct handset-to-handset communications.
- 8. In a wireless handset with enhanced operating features, a method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications, the method comprising:
assigning a set of frequency pairs to the wireless handset, each of the frequency pairs providing a duplex channel for supporting direct handset-to-handset communications between the wireless handset and another wireless handset; monitoring a predetermined frequency band of at least one of the frequency pairs and detecting when a page message is received representing an incoming call request from the another wireless handset to the wireless handset; providing, to a user of the wireless handset, an alert indication of the presence of the incoming call request from the another wireless handset; determining if the user of the Wireless handset responds to the alert indication and indicates to answer the incoming call request; and switching to a voice mode and providing direct handset-to-handset communications between the wireless handset and the another wireless handset when it is determined that the user of the wireless handset has indicated to answer the incoming call request.
- 9. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 8, wherein the method further comprises sending, when the page message is detected, a page response to the another wireless handset to indicate that the page message was received by the wireless handset.
- 10. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 9, wherein the sending further comprises repetitively sending the page response a predetermined number of times to the another wireless handset to ensure that the page response is received.
- 11. The method for establishing direct handset-to handset communications according to claim 8, wherein the page message includes a called party directory number DNr, and the detecting comprises determining if the called party directory number DNr corresponds to a directory number DNp of the wireless handset and accepting the page message when it is determined that the called party directory number DNr corresponds to the directory number DNp of the wireless handset.
- 12. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 11, wherein the method further comprises sending, when the page message is accepted, a page response to the another wireless handset to indicate that the page message was received by the wireless handset.
- 13. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 11, wherein the method further comprises rejecting the page message and monitoring the predetermined frequency band of another one of the frequency pairs when the called party directory number DNr does not correspond to the directory number of the wireless handset.
- 14. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 8, wherein the method further comprises sending a response message from the wireless handset to the another wireless handset to indicate whether the user of the wireless handset has answered the incoming call request.
- 15. The method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 14, wherein the determining comprises determining whether the user of the wireless handset responds to the alert indication within a predetermined period of time, and the sending comprises sending, when it is determined that the user has not responded to the alert indication within the predetermined period of time, a response message to the another wireless handset that indicates that the incoming call request was not answered.
- 16. A method for establishing direct handset-to-handset communications according to claim 8, wherein the predetermined frequency band of the at least one of the frequency pairs is a high frequency band, and the monitoring further comprises monitoring a high frequency band of each of the frequency pairs to detect a page message.
- 17. A method for establishing a conference call between a plurality of wireless handsets, the method comprising:
defining a frame including a plurality of time slots, at least one of the time slots being allocated for carrying control data; operating each of the wireless handsets in a direct handset-to-handset communications mode; and transmitting voice data between each of the wireless handsets in the other of the time slots that are not allocated for carrying control data.
- 18. A method according to claim 17, wherein the defining comprises defining three time slots per frame, dedicating the first time slot of the three time slots for carrying control data and providing the second and third time slots of the three time slots for carrying voice data.
- 19. A method according to claim 17, wherein the defining comprises defining three time slots per frame, such that any one of the three time slots is utilized for carrying control data.
