Claims
- 1. A method of opening envelope flaps comprising the steps of:
- revolving a gripper drum;
- conveying envelopes in seriatim upon the periphery of said gripper drum in flap-up orientation with flap edge trailing;
- rotating a rotor that is disposed in the vicinity of the periphery of said gripper drum in a direction of rotation that is the opposite of the direction of rotation of said gripper drum, said rotor including at least one sucker cup extending from the periphery thereof;
- valving vacuum to said sucker cup while said sucker cup is oriented toward said gripper drum;
- attracting and grabbing an envelope flap by said sucker cup during said step of valving;
- opening and unfolding the envelope flap by the action of said sucker cup;
- releasing the envelope flap subsequent to said step of valving;
- intercepting the envelope flap by a plow device during said step of opening and unfolding, said step of intercepting including the steps of checking proper flap opening and detecting the absence of envelopes at times when envelopes should be present, said steps of checking and sensing being effected by a photo-sensor included in said plow device; and,
- further unfolding the envelope flap with said plow device;
- wherein said steps of conveying, rotating, and valving are effected in a mutually-synchronized phased manner with respect to one another so that said sucker cup receives vacuum valved thereto and reaches an envelope flap while the flap of an envelope being conveyed upon said gripper drum is substantially vicinally disposed with respect to said rotor.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said step of valving is effected by rotary valve means.
- 3. An envelope flap opener having means for conveying envelopes that include a revolving gripper drum upon whose periphery envelopes are carried in flap-up orientation with flap edge trailing, the envelope flap opener further including a rotor disposed vicinally to said gripper drum, said rotor having a direction of rotation counter to the direction of rotation of said gripper drum, said rotor comprising:
- at least one sucker cup extending from the periphery of said rotor;
- a rotary valve means for valving of vacuum to said at least one sucker cup when said sucker cup is oriented toward said gripper drum;
- means for synchronizing and phasing the rotations of said gripper drum and said rotor as well as the valving action of said rotary valve arrangement so that an envelope flap is attracted and attached to said sucker cup while an envelope is carried upon said gripper drum past said rotor, said sucker cup unfolding and subsequently releasing the flap; and,
- plow means for intercepting an opened flap and for further unfolding an opened envelope flap, said plow means being disposed downstream from said rotor along the conveying path of envelopes on said gripper drum, said plow means including a photo-sensor for checking correct flap opening and for detecting the absence of envelopes at times when envelopes should be present.
- 4. The envelope flap opener according to claim 3, wherein said means for conveying envelopes further include an envelope hopper and a revolving initial gripper drum for transporting envelopes received from said hopper, said initial gripper drum being operative in carrying envelopes upon its periphery in flap-down orientation, said initial gripper drum delivering envelopes to the periphery of said revolving gripper drum.
