Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a substantially benign deicing composition, said method comprising:
- (a) recovering an industrial stream comprising a water soluble hydroxycarboxylic acid; and
- (b) adding an effective amount of a freezing point lowering compound to said industrial stream to lower the freezing point of said industrial stream, said freezing point lowering compound selected from the group consisting of water soluble hydroxycarboxylic acid esters, glycosides and mixtures thereof.
- 2. A method for deicing and/or anti-icing a surface, said method comprising:
- applying to said surface a composition comprising:
- (a) a deicing and/or anti-icing agent comprising at least about 90 weight percent of a hydrocarbyl aldoside; and
- (b) water.
- 3. A method as defined in claim 2 wherein said hydrocarbyl aldoside comprises an alkyl aldoside.
- 4. A method as defined in claim 2 wherein said hydrocarbyl aldoside is selected from the group consisting of glucosides, furanosides, maltosides, maltotriosides, glucopyranosides and mixtures thereof.
- 5. A method as defined in claim 3 wherein said alkyl aldoside comprises methyl glucoside.
- 6. A method as defined in claim 2 wherein said deicing and/or anti-icing agent comprises sorbitol.
- 7. A method as defined in claim 2 wherein said deicing and/or anti-icing agent further comprises a freezing point lowering additive selected from the group consisting of hydroxycarboxylic acid salts, acetate salts, formate salts, citrate salts, amino acids and salts of amino acids, dicarboxylic acid salts, lignin components, boric acid and salts of boric acid, glycerol, and mixtures thereof.
- 8. A method as defined in claim 7 wherein said freezing point lowering additive is selected from the group consisting of sodium lactate, cesium acetate, sodium acetate, potassium acetate, sodium formate, sodium citrate, lysine glutamate, sodium glucoheptonate, sodium and potassium salts of adipic, glutaric, succinic and malonic acids, boric acid, sodium borate, lignin sulfonate, sodium pyrrolidone carboxylate and mixtures thereof.
- 9. A method as defined in claim 8 wherein said freezing point lowering additive comprises sodium pyrrolidone carboxylate.
- 10. A method as defined in claim 2 wherein said surface comprises an aircraft.
- 11. A method of deicing and/or anti-icing a surface, said method comprising:
- applying to said surface a composition consisting essentially of:
- (a) an effective freezing point lowering amount of a deicing and/or anti-icing agent consisting essentially of a hydrocarbyl aldoside, and
- (b) water, and, optionally,
- (c) a freezing point lowering additive selected from the group consisting of hydroxycarboxylic acid salts, acetate salts, formate salts, citrate salts, amino acids and salts of amino acids, dicarboxylic acid salts, lignin compounds, boric acid and salts of boric acid, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol and mixtures thereof.
- 12. A method as defined in claim 11 wherein said hydrocarbyl aldoside is selected from the group consisting of glucosides, furanosides, maltosides, maltotriosides, glucopyranosides and mixtures thereof.
- 13. A method as defined in claim 11 wherein said hydrocarbyl aldoside comprises methyl glucoside.
- 14. A method as defined in claim 11 wherein said hydrocarbyl aldoside comprises sorbitol.
- 15. A method as defined in claim 11 wherein said freezing point lowering additive is selected from the group consisting of sodium lactate, cesium acetate, sodium acetate, potassium acetate, sodium formate, sodium citrate, lysine glutamate, sodium glucoheptonate, sodium and potassium salts of adipic, glutaric, succinic and malonic acids, boric acid, sodium borate, lignin sulfonate, sodium pyrrolidone carboxylate, and mixtures thereof.
- 16. A method as defined in claim 15 wherein said freezing point lowering additive comprises sodium pyrrolidone carboxylate.
- 17. A method as defined in claim 15 wherein said surface is an aircraft and said freezing point lowering additive is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and mixtures thereof.
- 18. A deicing and/or anti-icing agent consisting essentially of:
- (a) an effective freezing point lowering amount of a mixture of a hydroxycarboxylic acid salt and a hydrocarbyl aldoside,
- (b) water, and, optionally,
- (c) a freezing point lowering additive selected from the group consisting of acetate salts, formate salts, citrate salts, amino acids and salts of amino acids, dicarboxylic acid salts, lignin compounds, boric acid and salts or boric acid, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol and mixtures thereof.
- 19. A composition as defined in claim 18 wherein said hydroxycarboxylic acid salt comprises sodium lactate.
- 20. A composition as defined in claim 18 wherein said hydrocarbyl aldoside comprises an alkyl aldoside.
- 21. A composition as defined in claim 18 wherein said hydrocarbyl aldoside comprises sorbitol.
- 22. A composition as defined in claim 18 wherein said hydrocarbyl aldoside is selected from the group consisting of glucosides, furanosides, maltosides, maltotriosides, glucopyranosides and mixtures thereof.
- 23. A composition as defined in claim 20 wherein said alkyl aldoside comprises methyl glucoside.
- 24. A composition as defined in claim 18 wherein said freezing point lowering additive is selected from the group consisting of cesium acetate, sodium acetate, potassium acetate, sodium formate, sodium citrate, lysine glutamate, sodium glucoheptonate, sodium and potassium salts of adipic, glutaric, succinic and malonic acids, boric acid, sodium borate, lignin sulfonate, sodium pyrrolidone carboxylate, and mixtures thereof.
- 25. A composition as defined in claim 18 wherein said freezing point lowering additive is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and mixtures thereof.
- 26. A de-icing and/or anti-icing agent composition comprising:
- (a) an effective freezing point lowering amount of a mixture of a hydrocarbyl aldoside and a hydroxycarboxylic acid ester, and,
- (b) water.
