Claims
- 1. An environmentally friendly tampon assembly, comprising:
- a pledget of absorbent material;
- an inner sleeve for containing said pledget, said inner sleeve being fabricated from a biodegradable material, including a slot for receiving a tang and having pushing means at a forward end thereof for pushing said pledget; and
- an outer sleeve for slidable containing said inner sleeve, said outer sleeve being fabricated from an outer sleeve blank comprising biodegradable material wherein said outer sleeve blank is rolled to form a tube, said outer sleeve having a tang formed from a portion of the outer sleeve blank extending inwardly from a substantially linear longitudinal seam, and said outer sleeve being closed proximate said tang.
- 2. The tampon assembly according to claim 1, wherein said inner and outer sleeves are both fabricated from a material which is both biodegradable and flushable.
- 3. The tampon assembly according to claim 1, wherein said inner and outer sleeves are both fabricated from a material comprising paper.
- 4. The tampon assembly according to claim 1, wherein said outer sleeve is folded along at least one fold line to form said retaining tang.
- 5. The tampon assembly according to claim 4, wherein said outer sleeve blank is prescored at said fold line.
- 6. The tampon assembly according to claim 1, wherein said tang is an extension of the outer sleeve blank.
- 7. The tampon assembly according to claim 1, wherein said tang comprises a projection of said outer sleeve which is folded over onto itself so that said projection is gathered up adjacent to the rest of said tube, said projection being flattened against the inner surface of the outer sleeve at a first end thereof, whereby the so-formed tang will fan outwardly away from the rest of the outer sleeve toward a second end which is opposite the first end.
- 8. A tampon assembly according to claim 1, wherein a strip of material is removed from said outer sleeve, thereby defining a slot in said outer sleeve, said slot having a bottom; and said outer sleeve is folded so as to position material on one side of said slot over material on a second to form a longitudinal seam, opposite side of said slot, said folding forming said tang out of material from the bottom of the slot, said tang extending inwardly from the inner surface of said outer sleeve.
- 9. A tampon assembly according to claim 8, wherein said folding is along two parallel fold lines which are aligned with said slot and intersect the bottom of said slot, thereby giving the resulting tang a squared-off profile.
- 10. A tampon assembly according to claim 1, wherein said tang comprises a projection of said outer sleeve which is rolled over onto itself so that said projection is gathered up adjacent to the rest of said outer sleeve, said projection being flattened against the inner surface of the outer sleeve at a first end thereof, whereby the so-formed tang will fan outwardly away from the rest of the outer sleeve toward a second end which is opposite the first end.
- 11. A tampon assembly according to claim 1, wherein a strip of material is removed from said outer sleeve, thereby defining a slot in said outer sleeve blank, said slot having a bottom; and material at the bottom of said slot is rolled over so as to position material on one side of said slot over material on a second, opposite side of said slot to form a longitudinal seam, said rolling forming said tang out of material from the bottom of the slot, said tang extending inwardly from the inner surface of said outer sleeve.
- 12. The tampon assembly according to claim 1, wherein said tang is secured to said outer sleeve with an adhesive.
- 13. The tampon assembly according to claim 1, wherein said inner sleeve has a gripping ring at a second end which is opposite said forward end.
- 14. An environmentally friendly tampon assembly comprising:
- a pledget of absorbent material;
- an inner sleeve for containing said pledget, said inner sleeve being fabricated from a biodegradable material, including a slot for receiving a tang and having pushing means at a forward end thereof for pushing said pledget; and
- an outer sleeve for slidably containing said inner sleeve, said outer sleeve being fabricated by a process comprising the steps of:
- forming an outer sleeve blank comprising at least one substantially planar, outer sleeve-forming portion and a tang-forming projection extending from at least one side of at least one of the outer sleeve-forming portions;
- manipulating the tang-forming projection to form a tang extending out of the plane of the at least one outer-sleeve forming portion;
- rolling the at least one outer sleeve-forming portion to form an outer sleeve; and
- forming at least one longitudinal seam where the tang extends from the at least one outer sleeve-forming portions.
- 15. The tampon assembly according to claim 14 which further comprises the steps of folding the tang-forming projection over onto itself, gathering the tang-forming projection adjacent to the rest of said tube, and flattening the tang-forming projection against the inner surface of the outer sleeve at a first end thereof, whereby the so-formed tang will fan outwardly away from the rest of the outer sleeve toward a second end which is opposite the first end.
- 16. A tampon assembly according to claim 14 which further comprises the steps of rolling the tang-forming projection over onto itself, gathering the projection up adjacent to the rest of said outer sleeve, and flattening the projection against the inner surface of the outer sleeve at a first end thereof, whereby the so-formed tang will fan outwardly away from the rest of the outer sleeve toward a second end which is opposite the first end.
- 17. An environmentally friendly tampon assembly comprising:
- a pledget of absorbent material;
- forming an outer sleeve blank comprising a substantially planar, outer sleeve-forming portion
- removing a strip of material from the outer sleeve-forming portion, thereby defining slot between two regions of the outer sleeve-forming portion, said slot having a bottom, and leaving a tang-forming portion between the two regions of the outer sleeve-forming portion;
- manipulating the tang-forming portion to form a tang extending out of the plane of the at least one outer-sleeve forming portion;
- rolling the at least one outer sleeve-forming portion to form an outer sleeve; and
- forming at least one longitudinal seam where the tang extends from the at least one outer sleeve-forming portions.
- 18. A tampon assembly according to claim 17, which further comprises the steps of rolling the tang-forming portion over to position material on one side of the slot over material on a second, opposite side of the slot to form a longitudinal seam, forming the tang out of the tang-forming portion, the tang extending inwardly from the inner surface of the outer sleeve.
- 19. A tampon assembly according to claim 18 wherein said folding is along two parallel fold lines which are aligned with said slot and intersect the bottom of said slot, thereby giving the resulting tang a squared-off profile.
