Claims
- 1. A stable polymer-polyol comprising the reaction product of:
- (a) a polyol having an average molecular weight of at least about 500, that is essentially free of ethylenic unsaturation,
- (b) an epoxy co-reactant that is essentially free of ethylenic unsaturation, and
- (c) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer which is reactive with free hydroxyl groups of said polyol and said epoxy co-reactant by free radical addition polymerization to a substantially linear polymer having a molecular weight of at least 5000
- wherein said polyol acts as a dispersing medium for the linear polymer, is liquid at the reaction temperature and has at least two radicals which are reactive with the --N.dbd.C.dbd.O of a polyisocyanate.
- 2. A method of producing a stable polymer-polyol comprising (a) introducing (i) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer which is reactive with free hydroxyl groups of a polyol into a reaction vessel containing (ii) a polyol having an average molecular weight of at least about 500 that is essentially free of ethylenic unsaturation and (iii) an epoxy co-reactant that is essentially free of ethylenic unsaturation or, (iv) an adduct of said polyol and said epoxy co-reactant and (b) polymerizing said monomer by free radical addition polymerization to a substantially linear polymer having a molecular weight of at least 5000, wherein said polyol or adduct acts as a dispersing medium for the linear polymer, is liquid at the reaction temperature and has at least two radicals which are reactive with the --N.dbd.C.dbd.O of a polyisocyanate.
- 3. A method in accordance with claim 2 in which said monomer is metered into said reaction vessel at a rate equivalent to approximately the polymerization rate under the conditions existing in said reaction vessel.
