Claims
- 1. In a portable hand-held electronic navigation device including a housing having a front face having an input area and a display area, for displaying information, aligned along a longitudinal axis, with the display area and input area defining an upright orientation with respect to the vision of a user when the device is held by the user in a normal upright orientation, the improvement comprising:
said input area located vertically above said display area and for entirely controlling said portable, hand-held electronic device, wherein the information displayed at said display area is presented in an upright orientation corresponding to said upright orientation of said display and input areas.
- 2. The improvement of claim 1, wherein said input area is sized, configured and located on said front face is fully accessible by the thumb of the hand holding the device.
- 3. The improvement of claim 2, wherein said display area is elongated vertically.
- 4. A portable, hand-held electronic navigation device comprising:
an engageable housing having a rear face and further having a front face, said front face having a sole input area, for controlling said portable, hand-held electronic navigation device, and a display area, for displaying information aligned on said front face along a longitudinal axis of the housing and defining an upright orientation with respect to the vision of a user when the device is held by the user in a normal upright orientation, wherein said input area is located on said front face so that it is above said display area and wherein the information displayed at said display area is presented in an upright orientation corresponding to said upright orientation of said display and input areas; and said engageable housing formed for gripping by only one hand of a user, such that said rear face of said housing rests within said one hand of said user, said input area thereby being entirely accessible by a thumb on said one hand of said user.
- 5. The hand-held electronic device of claim 4, wherein said device comprises a navigational aid including a GPS.
- 6. In a portable hand-held electronic navigation device including a housing defining a front face, a top located generally above said front face, a bottom located generally below the front face, said front face having an input area for controlling said device and a display area for displaying information, the improvement comprising:
said input area and said display area are located on said front face and define only a single, axial orientation for use, wherein said input area is located above said display area and is for entirely controlling said electronic device, and wherein the information displayed at said display area is presented in an upright orientation corresponding to said single, axial orientation with respect to the vision of a user when the device is held by the user in a normal upright orientation.
- 7. The improvement of claim 6, said front face generally defining a rectangular oriented upright in a plane of said front face.
- 8. A hand-held electronic navigation device comprising:
an engageable housing having a rear face and further having a front face, said front face having only one input area and only one display area, for displaying information, aligned on said front face along a longitudinal axis of the housing, wherein said input area is located above said display area when said longitudinal axis is in a upright orientation with respect to the vision of a user when the device is held by the user in a normal upright orientation, and wherein the information displayed at said display area is in a correspondingly upright orientation; and said engageable housing formed for gripping by only one hand of a user, such that said rear face of said housing rests within said one hand of said user, said only one input area thereby being entirely accessible by a thumb on said one hand of said user.
- 9. In a hand-held electronic device including a housing defining a front face, a rear face, a top, and a bottom, said front face having only one input area and only one display area, the improvement comprising:
said only one input area and said only on display area located on said front face and defining a longitudinal axis, wherein said only one input area is located above said only one display area when said longitudinal axis is in an upright orientation and wherein the information displayed at said display area is presented in a correspondingly upright orientation with respect to the vision of a user when the device is held by the user in a normal upright orientation.
- 10. In a hand-held electronic navigation device including a housing having a front face having only one input area and only one display area, for displaying information, aligned along a longitudinal axis, with the display and input area defining only an upright orientation with respect to the vision of a user when the device is held by the user in a normal upright orientation, the improvement comprising:
said single input area being located a said front face so that it is above said single display area and wherein the information displayed at said single display area is presented in an upright orientation corresponding to said upright orientation of said display and input areas.
- 11. A hand-held electronic navigation device comprising:
an engageable housing having a rear face and further having a front face, said front face having only one input area and a display area, for displaying information, aligned along a longitudinal axis of the housing, with said display area and said single input area defining an upright orientation with respect to the vision of a user when the device is held by the user in a normal upright orientation, wherein said input area is located vertically above said display area on said front face, and wherein the information displayed at said display area is presented in an upright orientation corresponding to said upright orientation of said single input area and said display area; and said engageable housing formed for gripping by only one hand of a user, such that said rear face of said housing rests within said one hand of said user, said input area thereby being entirely accessible by a thumb on said one hand of said user.
- 12. In a hand-held electronic navigation device including a housing defining a front face, a top located generally above said front face, a bottom located generally below the front face, said front face having only one input area and a display area, for displaying information, the improvement comprising:
said single input area and said display area defining only a single, axial orientation for use, wherein said input area is located on said front face at a location that is above said display area, and wherein the information displayed at said display area is presented in an upright orientation with respect to the vision of a user when the device is held by the user in a normal upright orientation corresponding to said single, axial orientation.
- 13. In a hand-held navigation device including a housing defining a front face, a rear face, a top, and a bottom with respect to the vision of a user when the device is held by the user in a normal upright orientation, said front face having only one input area and only one display area, the improvement comprising:
said one input area and said one display area defining a longitudinal axis, wherein said one input area is located above said one display area along the longitudinal axis with respect to the vision of a user when the device is held by the user in the normal upright orientation, said one display area presenting information in a vertical upright direction with respect to the vision of a user such that a top of said information is adjacent to a bottom of said one input area and a bottom of said information is adjacent to said bottom of said housing when the device is held by the user in the normal upright orientation.
- 14. In the hand-held navigation device of claim 13, wherein said navigation device communicates with a global positioning system.
- 15. In the hand-held navigation device of claim 13, the improvement further comprising said housing having at least one battery cavity aligned along said longitudinal axis, said at least one battery cavity having an end that opens onto said bottom face of said housing.
- 16. In the hand-held navigation device of claim 13, the improvement further comprising:
said housing defining an interior space including at least one battery cavity for holding at least one battery, said at least one battery cavity having first and second ends, said first end opening onto a bottom face of said housing, said second end being spaced apart from and below a top face of said housing, said bottom of said display area being positioned proximate said first end.
