Claims
- 1. Oil-soluble carboxylic acid esters prepared by the esterification of
- A. at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent having an average of at least fifty aliphatic carbon atoms per molecule exclusive of the carboxylic carbon atom; with
- B. at least one polyoxyalkylene alcohol which is a demulsifier for aqueous emulsions, has an average molecular weight in the range of from about 1,000 to about 10,000, and is a block polymer comprising (1) a hydrophobic portion corresponding to the formula, --CH(R')--CH.sub.2 --O--, wherein R' is an alkyl group of up to three carbon atoms, and (2) from about 5% to about 40% by weight of a hydrophilic portion corresponding to the formula, --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O--; wherein the total amount of (A) and (B) used in the esterification is such that there is at least 0.001 equivalent of (B) for each equivalent of (A).
- 2. The esters of claim 1 wherein the acylating agent is a substantially saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid or anhydride.
- 3. The esters of claim 2, wherein the polyoxyalkylene alcohol has from two to three hydroxy groups.
- 4. The esters of claim 3, wherein the polyoxyalkylene alcohol has an average molecular weight of from about 2000 to about 7000 and the hydrophilic portion comprises from about 10% to about 30% by weight.
- 5. The esters of claim 4, wherein for each equivalent of acylating agent there is less than 0.25 equivalents of polyoxyalkylene alcohol demulsifier.
- 6. Oil-soluble carboxylic acid esters prepared by the esterification of
- A. at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent having an average of at least thirty aliphatic carbon atoms per molecule exclusive of the carboxylic carbon atom; with
- B. at least one polyoxyalkylene alcohol, which is a demulsifier for aqueous emulsions, has an average molecular weight in the range of from about 1,000 to about 10,000 and is a block polymer comprising (1) a hydrophobic portion corresponding to the formula, --CH(R')--CH.sub.2 --O--, wherein R' is an alkyl group of up to three carbon atoms, and (2) from about 5% to about 40% by weight of a hydrophilic portion corresponding to the formula, --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O--; and
- C. at least one polyhydric alcohol having two to ten hydroxy groups and up to twenty aliphatic carbon atoms; wherein the total amount of (A), (B), and (C) used in the reaction is such that there is at least 0.001 equivalent of (B), and at least 0.01 equivalent of (C) per equivalent of (A).
- 7. The esters of claim 6, wherein the acylating agent is a substantially saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid or anhydride.
- 8. The esters of claim 7, wherein the polyoxyalkylene alcohol has from two to three hydroxy groups.
- 9. The esters of claim 8, wherein the polyoxyalkylene alcohol has an average molecular weight of from about 2000 to about 7000 and the hydrophilic portion comprises from about 10% to about 30% by weight.
- 10. The esters of claim 9, wherein the polyhydric alcohol contains at least three hydroxy groups and up to 10 carbon atoms.
- 11. The esters of claim 10, wherein for each equivalent of acylating agent there is less than 0.25 equivalents of polyoxyalkylene alcohol demulsifier.
- 12. Oil-soluble carboxyic acid esters prepared by the reaction of
- A. at least one carboxylic acid acylating agent having an average of at least thirty aliphatic carbon atoms per molecule exclusive of the carboxylic carbon atom; with
- B. at least one polyoxyalkylene alcohol, which is a demulsifier for aqueous emulsions, has an average molecular weight in the range of from about 1,000 to about 10,000, and is a block polymer comprising (1) a hydrophobic portion corresponding to the formula, --CH(R')--CH.sub.2 --O--, wherein R' is an alkyl group of up to three carbon atoms, and (2) from about 5% to about 40% by weight of a hydrophilic portion corresponding to the formula, --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O--; and (C) at least one basically reacting Group II(a) metal compound; wherein the total amount of (A), (B), and (C) used in the reaction is such that there is at least 0.001 equivalent of (B), and at least 0.01 equivalent of (C) per equivalent of (A).
- 13. The esters of claim 12, wherein the acylating agent is a substantially saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid or anhydride.
- 14. The esters of claim 13, wherein the polyoxyalkylene alcohol has from two to three hydroxy groups.
- 15. The esters of claim 14, wherein the polyoxyalkylene alcohol has from an average molecular weight of from about 2000 to about 7000 and the hydrophilic portion comprises from about 10% to about 30% by weight.
- 16. The esters of claim 15, wherein for each equivalent of acylating agent there is at least 0.5 equivalent of B) and C).
- 17. Oil-soluble metal containing carboxylic acid esters prepared by a process comprising the steps of
- I. the esterification of at least one polycarboxylic acid acylating agent (A) having an average of at least thirty aliphatic carbon atoms per molcule exclusive of the carboxylic carbon atoms; with
- 1. at least one polyoxyalkylene alcohol (B), which is a demulsifier for aqueous emulsions, has an average molecular weight in the range of from about 1,000 to about 10,000, and is a block polymer comprising (i) a hydrophobic portion corresponding to the formula, --CH(R')--CH.sub.2 --O--, wherein R' is an alkyl group of up to three carbon atoms, and (ii) from about 5% to 40% by weight of a hydrophilic portion corresponding to the formula, --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O--; and
- 2. at least one polyhydric alcohol (C) having two to ten hydroxy groups and up to twenty aliphatic carbon atoms; wherein the amounts are such that the ratio of equivalents of (A) to (B) to (C) is represented by the ratio of 1:b:c, where b .gtoreq. 0.001, c .gtoreq. 0.2, and b+c .gtoreq. 0.5, whereby a first ester-containing product is formed; and
- Ii. contacting the esterified product of step (I) with;
- 3. at least one basically reacting Group II(a) metal compound (D); wherein the amount of (D) is such that there is at least about one equivalent of (D) for each unreacted equivalent of (A).
- 18. The metal containing esters of claim 17, wherein the acylating agent is a substantially saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid or anhydride.
- 19. The metal containing esters of claim 18, wherein the polyoxyalkylene alcohol has from two to three hydroxyl groups.
- 20. The metal containing esters of claim 19 wherein the polyoxyalkylene alcohol has an average molecular weight of from about 2000 to about 7000 and the hydrophilic portion comprises from about 10% to about 30% by weight.
- 21. The metal containing esters of claim 20, wherein the basically reacting Group II(a) metal compound is selected from the group consisting of oxides and hydroxides of calcium, barium, and magnesium.
- 22. A process for the preparation of oil-soluble carboxylic acid esters which comprises the step of reacting
- A. at least one substantially saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon polycarboxylic acid acylating agent having an average of at least thirty aliphatic carbon atoms per molecule exclusive of the carboxylic carbon atom and being substantially free from oil-solubilizing pendant groups; with
- B. at least one polyoxyalkylene alcohol which is a demulsifier for aqueous emulsions, has an average molecular weight in the range of from about 1,000 to about 10,000, and is a block polymer comprising (1) a hydrophobic portion corresponding to the formula, --CH(R')--CH.sub.2 --O--, wherein R' is an alkyl group of up to three carbon atoms and (2) from about 5% to about 40% by weight of a hydrophilic portion corresponding to the formula, --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O--; and
- C. at least one primary or secondary amine; wherein the total amount of (A), (B) and (C) used in the reaction is such that there is at least 0.001 equivalent of (B), and at least 0.01 equivalent of (C) per equivalent of (A).
- 23. The process of claim 22, wherein the polyoxyalkylene alcohol has an average molecular weight in the range of from about 2,000 to about 7,000 has from two to four hydroxy groups and the hydrophilic content is from about 10% to about 30% by weight.
- 24. The process of claim 22, wherein the total amount of (B) and (C) is such that there is at least about 0.5 equivalent of the combination of (B) and (C) for each equivalent of (A).
- 25. The process of claim 22, wherein the amine component (C) is an alkylene polyamine having two to three carbon atoms in the alkylene groups and three to seven amino nitrogens.
- 26. The process of claim 25, wherein the alkylene polyamine is ethylene polyamine.
- 27. The process of claim 22, wherein the acylating agent is a substantially saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon substituted succinic acid or anhydride, wherein the substituents are derived from the group consisting of polybutylene, chlorinated ethylene-propylene copolymer, chlorinated polypropylene and chlorinated polybutylene.
- 28. The process of claim 22, wherein (A) is reacted with (B) and (C) simultaneously.
