Claims
- 1. A method for making foundry cores and molds which comprises mixing granular refractory material with an aqueous alkaline solution of a phenolic resole resin and a hardener comprising placing the mixture in a core box or pattern mold, and allowing the resin to cure, wherein the hardener composition comprises a solution of a benzylic ether resole resin in an ester, said benzylic ether resole resin comprising from about 5 percent to about 40 percent by weight of the solution.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the aqueous alkaline solution of a phenolic resole resin is form about 0.5 percent to about 8 percent by weight of the granular refractory material.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the binder composition further comprises a silane.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the phenol used for the preparation of the benzylic ether resole resin in said hardener composition is selected from the group consisting of phenol, ortho-cresol and mixtures thereof.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the benzylic ether resole resin in said hardener composition is an alkoxy-modified benzylic ether resole resin.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the alkoxy-modified benzylic ether resole resin in said hardener composition is a methoxy-modified benzylic ether resole resin.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the ester in said hardener composition is selected from the group consisting of gamma-butyrolactone, triacetin and mixtures thereof.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the benzylic ether resole resin in said hardener composition comprises from about 15 percent to about 30 percent by weight of the solution of benzylic ether resole resin in the ester.
