The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for estimating condition of a battery, and a related system and vehicle, and more specifically, to a method and apparatus for estimating condition of a battery by using recorded data on battery usage and a pre-established mode table, and a related system and vehicle.
Battery charging of an electric vehicle is slow and has high cost with vigorous development of the automotive industry. At present, there are primarily two operating modes of the electric vehicle: plug-in battery charging and battery swapping.
One is plug-in charging mode, that is, the user purchases the electric vehicle including a battery and charges the battery in a charging station or charging pole provided by an operator. Under this charging mode, the user may select slow charging or fast charging by himself/herself as needed. The former has a longer duration but a lower rate whereas the latter has a shorter duration but a higher rate. Charging facilities for the two types of charging are operated by the operators. The operator bills the user according to the electricity consumed during charging. However, after such a charging, the electricity energy discharged by the battery when in use is always less than the electricity energy consumed during the charging process, and a difference between the two depends on the condition of the battery. That is to say, for a given battery with different condition, in the case that the same electricity energy is consumed, a different battery can discharge different electricity energy when in use. Therefore, billing the user only according to the electricity energy consumed during the charging is irrational.
The other one is battery swap mode, that is, the consumer purchases the electric vehicle without the battery but rents or leases the battery from a battery operator, and the user pays by a driving distance of the current battery. However, the driving distance cannot sufficiently reflect the condition of the battery, because it fails to take battery degradation caused by a different usage mode into full consideration and cannot effectively suppress abuse of battery. For example, in two cases where the battery drives the same distance, namely, driven with a heavy load and driven without load, or driven while climbing and driven on flat road, or driven with a variable speed and driven with a uniform speed, battery degradation is different in different cases. Therefore, it is also irrational to bill the user only based on the driving distance.
Therefore, there needs a technique to correctly estimate the condition of the battery, e.g., the degradation degree of the battery, the remaining quantity of electricity energy of the battery, so as to rationally judge a residual value of the battery for the convenience of rational billing.
One object of the invention is to improve the prior art to provide a novel method and apparatus for estimating a condition of a battery.
According to one embodiment of the present invention, an apparatus is provided for estimating a condition of a battery, comprising: a mode identifying unit configured to identify a usage mode of the battery during a period of time and its corresponding attenuation curve, according to recorded data on battery usage, stored usage modes of the battery and attenuation curves corresponding to the various usage modes, the attenuation curve representing a change of a fully Charged capability of the battery over battery usage; and a condition estimating unit configured to calculate degradation of the battery according to the recorded data and the identified usage mode and its corresponding attenuation curve, the degradation representing a quantity of the fully charged capacity of the battery that is reduced over the battery usage.
According to another embodiment of the present invention, a method is provided for estimating a condition of a battery, comprising: identifying a usage mode of the battery during a period of time and a corresponding attenuation curve, according to recorded data on battery usage, stored usage modes of the battery and attenuation curves corresponding to the various usage modes, the attenuation curve representing a change of a fully charged capacity of the battery over battery usage; and calculating battery degradation according to the recorded data and the identified usage mode and its corresponding attenuation curve, the degradation representing a quantity of the fully charged capacity of the battery that is reduced over the battery usage.
The invention further provides a system comprising the apparatus of the invention.
The invention further provides a vehicle comprising the apparatus of the invention.
According to an aspect of the invention, the condition of the battery can be correctly estimated so as to more rationally judge the residual value of the battery, and to be better adapted to requirements such as rational billing and predicting a drivable distance/duration.

The apparatus 200 for estimating a condition of the battery according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention comprises: a mode identifying unit 201 configured to identify a usage mode of the battery during a period of time and its corresponding attenuation curve, according to recorded data on battery usage, stored usage modes of the battery and attenuation curves corresponding to the various usage modes, the attenuation curve f representing a change of a fully charged capacity of the battery over the battery usage; and a condition estimating unit 202 configured to calculate battery degradation according to the recorded data, the identified usage mode and its corresponding attenuation curve, the degradation representing a quantity of the fully charged capacity of the battery that is reduced over the battery usage.
Besides the electric vehicle, the apparatus for estimating a condition of the battery can be mounted on or coupled with other apparatuses that use a battery.
The usage modes of the battery and the attenuation curves corresponding to the usage modes can be stored in various storage mediums. For example, they can be stored in a mode table {M} or other databases. The usage modes of the battery comprise a charging mode, an idle mode and a discharging mode.
The degradation of the battery can be embodied in that the fully charged capacity of the battery is reduced over the battery usage, wherein the fully charged capacity of the battery generally refers to a discharging capacity of the battery which is discharged to a standard cut-off voltage Ut according to a particular discharging mode, in the case of a full charge. The standard cut-off voltage Ut is a fixed value associated with the electrode material of a lithium-ion battery, generally 2.75V. The full charge of the battery for example may be the case where the battery is charged to the standard limit voltage which generally is 4.2V for a lithium-ion battery.
The embodiment will be described below by taking a lithium-ion battery for example.
Data on battery usage can be recorded in real time, comprising: start time and end time of battery usage, initial voltage and final voltage of battery usage, charge current, charge level, temperature, discharge current, idle time, and depth of discharge representing electricity energy of the battery before idle. With regard to charging, the start time and end time of battery usage are start time and end time of the charging. With regard to discharging, the start time and end time of battery usage are start time and end time of the discharging. There are generally three kinds of charge levels, namely, Level I, Level II, Level III, and specific voltage and current specifications are different in different countries.
As an example, Mode tables {Mc}, {Md} and {Mi} of the charging mode, discharging mode and idle mode can be established respectively according to experimental data of a particular type of lithium battery (positive electrode, negative electrode, electrolyte material). The charging mode table {Mc}, discharging mode table {Md} and idle mode table {Mi} can be collectively referred to as mode table {M}.
Suppose that the charging mode can be determined by charge level L, charging capacity δe, temperature T and final voltage U. Attenuation curves of the battery in different charge level L-final voltage U-charging capacity δe-temperature T modes can be obtained. according to the following example.
For example, suppose that the factory capacity of the battery is c0. Discharge an unused battery just leaving the factory according to a standard discharging mode of 1C, and record a discharging capacity E0 that the battery is discharged from a certain voltage to the standard cut-off voltage, where C represents a ratio of current during charging and discharging. Completing discharging of the capacity of the battery within 1 hour is referred to as 1C standard discharging mode. By using a charging device of a charge level, the battery is charged from the standard cut-off voltage to the above certain voltage (i.e., final charging voltage) at a temperature, a charging capacity is recorded, and then the battery is discharged according to the 1C standard discharging mode to the standard cut-off voltage, and a discharging capacity is recorded. Charging and discharging the battery once is called a cycle. Repeat the above process a number of cycles and perform the corresponding data process, and obtain the condition of the battery after the number of cycles. The charging capacity and the discharging capacity can be obtained by respectively calculating an integral of charge current and discharge current with respect to time.
For a certain final charging voltage, suppose that in the first cycle, the discharging capacity of the battery which is discharged from the final charging voltage to the standard cut-off voltage is E1. After the first cycle, the fully charged capacity of the battery is

By calculating an average value of the charging capacities recorded in the number of cycles, a charging capacity required to discharge the battery from the standard cut-off voltage to the final voltage can be obtained. It should be noted that, even in the case of the same charge level, final voltage and temperature, a different charging capacity corresponds to a different charging mode. For example, in 25° C., the battery is charged from the standard cut-off voltage to 4.35 V by using the charge level I. If the charging stops during a linear rising stage of the voltage over time, the consumed charging capacity is for example 3.20 ampere-hour (Ah); if the battery is charged with a constant voltage for a period of time after the voltage reaches 4.35V, the consumed charging capacity is a value greater than 3.20 Ah, e.g., 3.30 Ah. The above two cases will be regarded as corresponding different charging modes.
As an example, for charge level I, temperature 25° C., respectively selecting final voltages 4.35V, 4.30V, 4.25V, 4.20V . . . , results in the attenuation curves shown in FIG. 3.

By selecting different parameters for the above process, the mode table {Mc} in various charging modes can be obtained as shown in for example Table 1.
Consequently, other values can be selected as needed for the scales of the parameters, and theoretically, the smaller the scale, the more accurate. However, by taking sampling quantity into consideration, a larger scale can be selected so long as different modes can be effectively distinguished. For example, the scale of the final voltage can be selected as 0.1V or others, so long as various modes can be effectively distinguished.

Suppose that the discharging mode can be determined by discharge current Id, temperature T and discharge initial voltage U. Attenuation modes in different discharge current-discharge initial voltage-temperature modes can be obtained according to the following example. The discharge current may contain a plurality of properties, e.g., type (DC, AC or pulsed), discharge rate, discharge frequency.
For example, charge the battery to its charging limit voltage by means of the 1C standard charging mode, discharge the battery with a current of a type and a value to the standard cut-off voltage, and record a discharging capacity when the voltage is dropped to each voltage scale. Charging the battery constantly with a current used in the 1C standard discharging mode is called a 1C standard charging mode. Then charge the battery from the standard cut-off voltage to the charging limit voltage of the battery according to the 1C standard charging mode, and then repeat the above discharging process, which is a cycle of battery usage. Repeat the above process a number of times, and perform the corresponding data process, then the condition of the battery after the number of cycles can be obtained. Here, the charging limit voltage can be set as a voltage slightly higher than the standard limit voltage 4.2V, e.g., 4.35V, to take various situations in actual use into consideration and record more data points. The discharging capacity when the voltage is dropped to each voltage scale can be obtained by calculating an integral of discharge current with respect to time. Each voltage scale can be processed as an initial voltage of the discharging, and then the discharging capacities discharging from various initial voltages to the standard cut-off voltage can be obtained through simple calculations.
For an initial charging voltage, suppose that the discharging capacity of a battery just leaving the factory, which is discharged from the initial charging voltage to the standard cut-off voltage, is E0, and in the first cycle, the discharging capacity of the battery, which is discharged from the initial charging voltage to the standard cut-off voltage, is E1. After the first cycle, the fully charged capacity of the battery is

For example, suppose that after the battery is discharged from the standard limit voltage to a depth of discharge by means of the 1C standard discharging mode, it is idle for a. period of time in an environmental temperature. The battery is then discharged to the discharging cut-off voltage still according to the 1C standard discharging mode, and a discharging capacity (an integral of current with respect to time) is recorded. Then charge the battery from the standard cut-off voltage to the standard limit voltage according to the 1C standard charging mode, and then repeat the above discharging and idle processes, which is a cycle of battery usage. Repeat the above process a number of cycles and perform the corresponding data process to obtain the condition of the battery after the number of cycles is obtained. The discharging capacity can be obtained by calculating an integral of discharge current with respect to time.

Secondly, in a step S102, search all the mode tables for a set {Ma} of all charging modes matching charge level L, initial charging voltage U and temperature T, and a set {Mb} of all charging modes matching charge level L, final charging voltage Ub and temperature T.

On the other hand, in the case that the identified usage mode is discharging mode, the condition estimating unit 202 can make the process as shown in
Firstly, in a step S201, search the mode table for a discharging mode ma matching discharge current Id, initial charging voltage Ua and temperature T, and a discharging mode mb matching discharge current Id, final charging voltage Ub and temperature T.
Next, in a step S202, according to attenuation curves fa and fb corresponding to the mode mb and ma, calculate slopes sa and sb of the attenuation curves fa and fb at a point c=ca respectively, wherein sa and sb respectively represent degradation caused by discharging the battery from the initial charging voltage Ua and the final charging voltage Ub to the standard cut-off voltage under the condition of the discharge current Id and temperature T.
Finally, in a step S203, calculate battery degradation s=sb−sa during the period of time, so as to obtain the fully charged capacity cb=ca+s of the battery at the time tb.
However, in the case that the identified usage mode is idle mode, the condition estimating unit 202 can make the process as shown in

Exemplary embodiments for estimating a condition of the battery during a period of time have been described above. Consequently, in order to estimate a condition of the battery during a long period of time, the long period of time can be divided into a plurality of time segments according to the usage mode of the battery and the estimation is made in order according to the above-described way. For example, the battery usage can be divided into a plurality of usage modes corresponding to the plurality of time segments according to a change of a charge state of the battery with time.
The condition estimating unit 202 can also calculate a rate of depreciation of once battery use
according to the fully charged capacity of the battery obtained as above, where cc is a scrap capacity of the battery. Correspondingly, a depreciation expense of the battery can be estimated. according to the rate of depreciation, so as to rationally judge its residual value in operation. For example, the depreciation expense BD of the battery can be defined as a product of battery price P and rate of depreciation Dr. The battery operator can rationally bill the user according to the depreciation expense of the battery in combination with an expense corresponding to battery charging/discharging capacity and related operating expenses. For example, according to an exemplary embodiment of the invention, a billing system 2 as shown in
Besides, while establishing the mode tables of the battery according to the experimental data, charging/discharging efficiencies in various usage modes can be recorded respectively, to establish an efficiency table in which charging mode, idle mode and discharging mode of the battery, Efficiencies corresponding to the usage modes may be stored. Charging efficiency, discharging efficiency and self-discharging efficiency in the idle mode can be defined as follows: the charging efficiency=(discharge current×time required to discharge to the cut-off voltage/charge current×charging time); the discharging efficiency=actual electricity energy discharged by discharging to the cut-off voltage/nominal capacity; self-discharging efficiency=energy of the battery reduced by idle/total energy of the battery before idle.
The condition estimating unit 202 can calculate the remaining quantity of electricity energy of the battery according to the efficiency table. The remaining quantity of electricity energy of the battery can be obtained by accumulating a change value of the remaining quantity of electricity energy caused by battery use on the basis of the factory electricity energy of the battery.
For example, in the case that the identified usage mode is charging mode, the condition estimating unit 202 can calculate the remaining quantity of electricity energy as follows: calculating the charging capacity δe during the period of time according to start time ta, end time tb and charge current Ic of the period of time; searching the efficiency table for the charging mode and its corresponding charging efficiency α according to the data on battery usage recorded during the period of time; and calculating the remaining quantity of electricity energy

Further, the following services can be provided to a driver of the electric vehicle according to the result of the remaining quantity of electricity energy of die battery; prompting a time that the battery can continue supplying power under the current driving condition, prompting a further driving distance under the current driving condition, etc.
Specifically, for example, calculate an average discharging rate and discharging efficiency in a unit time according to the current discharging mode of the battery, and then calculate power supplying time=(discharging efficiency)×(remaining quantity of electricity energy)/(average discharging rate). In combination with the time that the battery can continue supplying power and the driving speed of the vehicle, a further driving distance can be obtained.
