Claims
- 1. A method for forming at least one saturated hydrocarbon comprising contacting a compound selected from the group consisting of CO and unsaturated hydrocarbons with a catalyst consisting essentially of a compound of formula X.sub.6 Y.sub.6 Z.sub.a wherein X is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mo and W, Y is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Fe, Co, Ni, Mo and W, Z is at least one element selected from the group consisting of C, N and combinations thereof such that when Z is N, a is greater than or equal to 1 but less than or equal to 2 and when Z is C, a is greater than 1 but less than or equal to 2 except when Z is C and Y is Fe, then a is greater than or equal to 1 but less than or equal to 2 and hydrogen at a temperature and pressure effective for forming at least one saturated hydrocarbon.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound contacted with the catalyst and hydrogen is CO.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound selected is an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said unsaturated hydrocarbon is an aromatic hydrocarbon.
- 5. The method of claim 3 wherein said unsaturated hydrocarbon is an olefin.
- 6. A method for forming at least one saturated hydrocarbon comprising contacting a compound selected rom the group consisting of CO and unsaturated hydrocarbons with a catalyst composition of formula selected from eh group consisting of:
- Mo.sub.6 Fe.sub.6 Z.sub.a, Mo.sub.6 Co.sub.6 Z.sub.a, Mo.sub.6 Ni.sub.6 Z.sub.a,
- Mo.sub.6 (FeCO).sub.6 Z.sub.a, Mo.sub.6 (FenI.sub.6 Z.sub.a, Mo.sub.6 (CoNi).sub.6 Z.sub.a,
- Mo.sub.6 (FeCoNi).sub.6 Z.sub.a, W.sub.6 Fe.sub.6 Z.sub.a, W.sub.6 Co.sub.6 A.sub.z,
- W.sub.6 Ni.sub.6 Z.sub.a, W.sub.6 (FeCo).sub.6 Z.sub.a, W.sub.6 (FeNi).sub.6 Z.sub.a,
- W.sub.6 (Co,Ni).sub.6 Z.sub.a, W(Fe,Co,Ni).sub.6 Z.sub.a, (W,Mo).sub.6 Fe.sub.6 Z.sub.a,
- (W,Mo).sub.6 Co.sub.6 Z.sub.a, (W,Mo).sub.6 Ni.sub.6 Z.sub.a,
- (W,Mo).sub.6 (Fe,Co).sub.6 Z.sub.a,
- (W,Mo).sub.6 (Fe,Ni).sub.6 Z.sub.a, (W,Mo).sub.6 (Co,Ni).sub.6 Z.sub.a, and
- (W,mo).sub.6 (Fe,Co,Ni).sub.6 Z.sub.a,
- wherein Z is at least one element selected form the group consisting of C, N and combinations thereof such that when Z is N, a is greater than or equal to 1 but less tan or equal to 2 and when Z is c, a is greater than 1 but less than or equal to 2 except when Z is C and Y is Fe, then a is greater than or equal to 1 but less than or equal to 2 and hydrogen at a temperature and pressure sufficient to form at least one saturated hydrocarbon.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the compound is CO.
- 8. The method of claim 6 wherein said compound is an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the unsaturated hydrocarbon is an aromatic hydrocarbon.
- 10. The method of claim 8 wherein the unsaturated hydrocarbon is an olefin.
