Claims
- 1. A lubricating oil dispersant additive useful in oleaginous compositions which comprises a condensation product obtained by the reaction of:
- (a) at least one alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound formed by the alkylation of at least one hydroxy aromatic compound with a mixture comprising
- (i) at least one terminally unsaturated ethylene alpha-olefin polymer of 300 to 20,000 number average molecular weight, wherein at least 30% of said polymer's chains contain terminal ethenylidene unsaturation; and
- (ii) at least one polyalkene derived from at least one C.sub.2 to C.sub.20 alkene, the polyalkene having a number average molecular weight of at least about 900; and
- (b) at least one aldehyde reactant; and
- (c) at least one nucleophilic reactant.
- 2. The dispersant adduct according to claim 1 wherein the nucleophilic reagent comprises an amine containing from 2 to 60 carbon atoms and from 1 to 12 nitrogen atoms per molecule.
- 3. The dispersant adduct according to claim 2 wherein said amine comprises a polyalkylenepolyamine wherein said alkylene group contains 2 to 6 carbons and said polyalkylenepolyamine contains from 2 to about 9 nitrogen atoms per molecule.
- 4. The dispersant adduct according to claim 3 wherein said amine comprises polyethylenepolyamine.
- 5. A concentrate containing from about 3 to 45 weight percent of the dispersant additive of claim 1.
- 6. A lubricating oil composition containing from about 0.1 to 20 weight percent of the dispersant additive of claim 1.
- 7. The dispersant additive of claim 1 wherein the ethylene alpha-olefin polymer is selected from the group consisting of ethylene-propylene copolymer and ethylene-butene-1 copolymer.
- 8. The dispersant additive of claim 7, wherein the polyalkene comprises polyisobutylene.
- 9. The dispersant additive of claim 1 wherein the ethylene alpha-olefin polymer has a molar ethylene content of between about 20 and about 80 percent.
- 10. The dispersant additive of claim 1 wherein the ethylene-alpha-olefin polymer has a number average molecular weight of from about 700 to about 15,000, and wherein the polyalkene has a number average molecular weight of from about 1,200 to about 5,000.
- 11. The dispersant additive of claim 10, wherein the number average molecular weight of the ethylene alpha-olefin polymer is between about 1,500 and 5,000.
- 12. The dispersant additive of claim 10, wherein the polyalkene has a major molar amount of C.sub.2 to C.sub.10 monoolefin.
- 13. The dispersant additive of claim 12, wherein the ethylene alpha-olefin polymer is selected from the group consisting of ethylene-propylene copolymer and ethylene-butene-1 copolymer, and wherein the polyalkene comprises polyisobutylene.
- 14. The dispersant additive of claim 13, wherein polyisobutylene has a number average molecular weight between about 1,500 and 3,000.
- 15. The dispersant additive of claim 13 wherein the nucleophilic reagent comprises a polyalkylenepolyamine wherein the alkylene group contains 2 to 6 carbons and the polyalkylenepolyamine contains from 2 to about 9 nitrogen atoms per molecule.
- 16. The dispersant additive of claim 15 wherein the polyalkylenepolyamine comprises polyethylenepolyamine.
