Claims
- 1. A lubricating oil dispersant additive useful in oleaginous compositions which comprises a condensation product obtained by the reaction of:
- (a) at least one alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound formed by the alkylation of at least one hydroxy aromatic compound with at least one terminally unsaturated ethylene alpha-olefin polymer of 300 to 20,000 number average molecular weight, at least 30% of said polymer's chains contain terminal ethenylidene unsaturation;
- (b) at least one aldehyde reactant; and
- (c) at least one nucleophilic reactant.
- 2. The dispersant additive of claim 1 wherein said polymer comprises an ethylene-propylene copolymer.
- 3. The dispersant additive of claim 1 wherein said copolymer has a number average molecular weight of from about 700 to about 15,000.
- 4. The dispersant additive of claim 3 wherein said number average molecular weight is between about 1,500 and 5,000.
- 5. The dispersant additive of claim 1 wherein said polymer has a molar ethylene content of between about 20 and about 80 percent.
- 6. The dispersant additive of claim 2 wherein said polymer has a molar ethylene content of between about 45 and about 65 percent.
- 7. The dispersant additive of claim 1 wherein said alpha-olefin comprises butene-1.
- 8. The dispersant additive of claim 2 wherein said number average molecular weight is between about 1,500 and 5,000.
- 9. The dispersant adduct according to claim 1 wherein the nucleophilic reagent comprises an amine containing from 2 to 60 carbon atoms and from 1 to 12 nitrogen atoms per molecule.
- 10. The dispersant adduct according to claim 9 wherein said amine comprises a polyalkylenepolyamine wherein said alkylene group contains 2 to 60 carbons and said polyalkylenepolyamine contains from 2 to about 9 nitrogen atoms per molecule.
- 11. The dispersant adduct according to claim 10 wherein said amine comprises polyethylenepolyamine.
- 12. A concentrate containing from about 3 to 45 weight percent of the dispersant adduct of claim 1.
- 13. A concentrate containing from about 10 to 35 weight percent of the dispersant adduct of claim 2.
- 14. A lubricating oil composition containing from about 0.1 to 20 weight percent of the dispersant adduct of any of claims 1 or 2.
- 15. A process for producing a low sediment lubricating oil dispersant material which comprises contacting (A) at least one alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound formed by the alkylation of at least one hydroxy aromatic compound with at least one ethylene alpha-olefin polymer of 300 to 20,000 number average molecular weight, wherein at least 30% of said polymer's chains contain terminal ethenylidene unsaturation, (B) at least one aldehyde reactant; and (C) at least one nucleophilic reactant, under condensation conditions to form said dispersant material characterized by a VR' value of less than 4.1.
- 16. The process of claim 15 wherein said polymer comprises an ethylene-propylene copolymer.
- 17. The process of claim 15 wherein said copolymer has a number average molecular weight of from about 700 to about 15,000.
- 18. The process of claim 17 wherein said number average molecular weight is between about 1,500 and 5,000.
- 19. The process of claim 15 wherein said polymer has a molar ethylene content of between about 20 and about 80 percent.
- 20. The process of claim 16 wherein said polymer has a molar ethylene content of between about 45 and about 65 percent.
- 21. The process of claim 15 wherein said alpha-olefin comprises butene-1.
- 22. The process of claim 16 wherein said number average molecular weight is between about 1,500 and 5,000.
- 23. The process according to claim 15 wherein the nucleophilic reagent comprises an amine containing from 2 to 60 carbon atoms and from 1 to 12 nitrogen atoms per molecule.
- 24. The process according to claim 23 wherein said amine comprises a polyalkylenepolyamine wherein said alkylene group contains 2 to 60 carbons and said polyalkylenepolyamine contains from 2 to about 9 nitrogen atoms per molecule.
- 25. The process according to claim 24 wherein said amine comprises polyethylenepolyamine.
