Claims
- 1. A sterile surgical monofilament suture comprising an ethylene-propylene copolymer, said copolymer containing a small amount of polymerized ethylene, the balance being polymerized propylene, said ethylene being present in an amount sufficient to impart a significant reduction in Young's Modulus to the suture compared with a comparable polypropylene homopolymer suture, wherein said copolymer contains from about 0.3 to about 7 weight percent polymerized ethylene.
- 2. A sterile surgical monofilament suture comprising an ethylene-propylene copolymer, said copolymer containing a small amount of polymerized ethylene, the balance being polymerized propylene, said ethylene being present in an amount sufficient to impart a significant reduction in Young's Modulus to the suture compared with a comparable polypropylene homopolymer suture, wherein said copolymer contains from about 0.5 to about 5 weight percent polymerized ethylene.
- 3. The sterile suture of claim 1 wherein said copolymer has a melt flow determined by ASTM D-1238, condition L, of from about 0.5 to about 7.
- 4. The sterile suture of claim 3 wherein the copolymer has a melt flow of less than about 3.
- 5. The sterile suture of claim 1 wherein said suture has the following properties:
- ______________________________________Tensile strength, psi 40,000 to 100,000Knot strength, psi 30,000 to 90,000Break elongation, % 40 to 120Young's Modulus, psi 100,000 to 350,000.______________________________________
- 6. The sterile suture of claim 3 wherein said suture has the following properties:
- ______________________________________Tensile strength, psi 40,000 to 100,000Knot strength, psi 30,000 to 90,000Break elongation, % 40 to 120Young's Modulus, psi 100,000 to 350,000.______________________________________
- 7. The sterile suture of claim 4 wherein said suture has the following properties:
- ______________________________________Tensile strength, psi 40,000 to 100,000Knot strength, psi 30,000 to 90,000Break elongation, % 40 to 120Young's Modulus, psi 100,000 to 350,000.______________________________________
- 8. A sterile needled suture comprising the suture of claim 1 attached to a needle.
