Claims
- 1. The method of excavating for forming an underground roadway at least a part of a rock boundary of which is of arcuate form comprising supporting a rotating cutter on one end of a boom, supporting another end of the boom on a pivot means, supporting the pivot means on a forward end of a boom support member, securing the boom at a predetermined angle to the pivot means and rotating the boom support on an axis extending along the longitudinal axis of the roadway; thereby rotating the pivot means on the axis of the boom support member and rotating the cutter in an arc having a center on an extended axis of the boom support member.
- 2. A method of excavating for forming an underground roadway at least a part of a rock boundary of which is of arcuate form, comprising anchoring a cutter unit and a stay unit in the roadway and each unit separately releasing and advancing along the roadway with respect to the other unit, thereby advancing the currently released unit with respect to the currently anchored unit, supporting a forwardly directed rotary cutter carrying a boom on a boom support and rotating the boom with respect to the cutter unit in rotational movement about an axis longitudinally extending along the roadway, pivoting the boom on the boom support member, rotating a rotary cutter mounted on the boom, controlling pivotal movement of the boom with ram means, such that in use the rotary cutter mounted on the boom cuts the arcuate form of the rock boundary, and collecting and conveying and loading broken rock cut by the rotary cutter.
- 3. A method of excavating for forming an underground roadway at least a part of a rock boundary of which is of arcuate form, comprising alternately anchoring and releasing a cutter unit in a roadway, sliding the cutter unit on a floor-mounted skid, and supporting a roof support shield on the cutter unit around at least a portion of the arcuate form of the rock boundary, rotating a boom support member on the cutter unit for rotational movement about an axis longitudinally extending along the roadway, pivoting a forwardly directed, rotary cutter-carrying boom on the boom support member, rotating a rotary cutter with a drive mounted on the boom, controlling pivotal movement of the boom with rams, a rotary mechanism mounted on the cutter unit and connected to the boom support member for rotating the boom support member about said axis thereby cutting an arcuate form in the rock boundary with the rotary cutter mounted on the boom and collecting and conveying broken rock cut by the rotary cutter.
- 4. A method of excavating for forming an underground roadway at least a part of a rock boundary which is of arcuate form, interconnecting a cutter unit and a stay unit with a number of guide rod means extending rearwardly from the cutter unit to slidably engage the stay unit, alternately anchoring in the roadway and releasing and advancing along the roadway each unit with respect to the other unit, by advancing the currently released unit with respect to the currently anchored unit, rotating a boom support member on the cutter unit about an axis longitudinally extending along the roadway, pivoting a forwardly directed, rotary cutter-carrying boom on the boom support member, rotating a rotary cutter on the boom, controlling pivotal movement of the boom by rams, thereby cutting the arcuate form of the rock boundary with the rotary cutter mounted on the boom and loading means arrangeable for collecting and conveying and loading broken rock cut by the rotary cutter.
- 5. A method of excavating for forming an underground roadway at least a part of a rock boundary of which is of arcuate form, comprising advancing a cutter unit by alternately anchoring and releasing the cutter unit in the roadway, rotating a boom support member on the cutter unit in rotational movement about an axis longitudinally extending along the roadway, pivoting a forwardly directed, rotary cutter-carrying boom on the boom support member, rotating a rotary cutter on the boom, controlling pivotal movement of the boom with rams, thereby cutting the arcuate form of the rock boundary with the rotary cutter mounted on the boom, collecting, loading and conveying broken rock cut by a rotary cutter mounted on the boom, and limit means provided on the boom to limit movement of the boom to within a preselected range.
- 6. An excavating method for forming an underground roadway, at least a part of a rock boundary of which is of arcuate form, comprising advancing a cutter unit and a stay unit in the roadway by alternately anchoring in the roadway and releasing and advancing along the roadway each unit with respect to the other unit, thereby advancing the currently released unit with respect to the currently anchored unit, rotating a boom support member on the cutter unit about an axis longitudinally extending along the roadway, pivoting a forwardly directed, rotary cutter-carrying boom on the boom support member, controlling pivotal movement of the boom with rams, rotating a rotary cutter head on the boom for cutting the arcuate form of the rock boundary, and loading and conveying broken rock cut by the rotary cutter.
- 7. A method of excavating for forming an underground roadway at least a part of a rock boundary of which is of arcuate form, comprising anchoring a cutter unit in the roadway, supporting a forwardly directed, rotary cutter-carrying boom on a boom support member carried by the cutter unit and rotating the boom with respect to at least a portion of the cutter unit in rotational movement about an axis longitudinally extending along the roadway, pivoting the forwardly directed, rotary cutter-carrying boom on the boom support member, rotating a rotary cutter mounted on the boom, controlling pivotal movement of the boom with ram means, such that in use the rotary cutter mounted on the boom cuts the arcuate form of the rock boundary, and collecting and conveying and loading broken rock cut by the rotary cutter.
