Claims
- 1. In a part sizing system utilizing at least one variable reluctance transducer, apparatus for supplying a constant excitation signal to the transducer, said apparatus comprising:
- a transformer having a primary winding and a secondary winding;
- power means coupled to the primary winding for inducing an AC excitation signal in said secondary winding;
- means for coupling said secondary winding to the transducer;
- means for supplying a constant reference signal;
- error detection means for comparing said reference signal with said excitation signal, said error detection means providing an error signal proportional to the difference between said reference and excitation signals; and
- feedback means for feeding said error signal back to said power means to compensate for said difference thereby maintaining a constant transducer excitation signal.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 which further comprises:
- signal rectification means for providing a DC potential level proportional to the amplitude of the excitation signal induced in the transformer secondary winding;
- said error detection means further including a first amplifier having an input coupled to said means for supplying a constant reference signal and another input coupled to an output of the signal rectification means; and
- means in the power means having an input coupled to the error detection means output, operative on receipt of the error signal to adjust the amplitude of the excitation signal so as to force the error signal towards a zero level.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the transformer secondary winding is bifilar wound with a grounded center tap, said secondary winding being provided with outer terminals for coupling the excitation signal to the transducer.
- 4. In a part sizing system utilizing a plurality of variable reluctance transducers, apparatus for supplying excitation signals to the transducers, said apparatus comprising:
- a transformer having a primary winding and a secondary winding, said secondary winding being bifilar wound with a grounded center tap and including outer terminals;
- power means for supplying power to the primary winding of the transformer, operative to supply an alternating current (AC) signal to the primary winding for inducing an AC excitation signal in said secondary winding, said power means including control means having a control input, operative to control the amplitude of said AC signal to the primary winding;
- means for coupling the outer terminals of said transformer to each of said transducers;
- reference means for supplying a constant DC reference signal;
- chopper means coupled to the outer terminals of said secondary winding, operative to rectify said AC excitation signal and provide a DC potential level proportional to the amplitude thereof;
- error amplifier means including a first input coupled to said reference means for supplying a constant reference signal and having a second input coupled to the output of said chopper means, operative for supplying an error signal proportional to the difference between said reference and rectified excitation signals; and
- feedback means for feeding said error signal back to the control input of said power means whereby said control means automatically adjusts the amplitude of the excitation signal so as to force the error signal towards a zero level.
