Claims
- 1. An exercise treadmill, comprising:
- a frame structure including two rotatable pulleys, said pulleys being positioned substantially parallel to each other, and a pair of spaced apart longitudinal frame members for providing longitudinal structural support for said frame structure;
- means for rotating one of said pulleys;
- an endless, moveable surface looped around said pulleys to form an upper an and a lower run, said movable surface being rotated when one of said pulleys is rotated, and providing an exercise surface on which a user can walk or run while exercising;
- a deck member secured beneath at least a portion of said upper run; and
- support means including a plurality of resilient support members for supporting said deck member on said frame structure effective to permit said deck member to deflect downwardly with a variable rate of deflection in response to the impact force of the user's feet on said exercise surface and to permit at least limited longitudinal movement of said deck member with respect to said frame structure when said deck member is deflected downwardly.
- 2. The exercise treadmill of claim 1 wherein said variable rate of deflection results in said deck deflecting downwardly a proportionally decreasing incremental distance in response to an increase in the impact force of the user's feet on said exercise surface.
- 3. The exercise treadmill of claim 2 wherein said plurality of resilient support members secured between said deck member and said frame structure and wherein said resilient support members have a variable spring constant that increases with an increase in the compression of said resilient support members.
- 4. The exercise treadmill of claim 3 wherein said resilient support members are elliptical in configuration.
- 5. The exercise treadmill of claim 3 further including a plurality of additional resilient support members secured between said deck member and said frame structure wherein said additional resilient support members have a substantially constant spring constant.
- 6. The exercise treadmill of claim 2 wherein said deck member deflects approximately according to a first relation y=400x for a first range of deflections and approximately according to a second relation y=640x-96 for a second range of deflections, where x represents the amount of deflection in inches and y represents the impact force in pounds.
- 7. The exercise treadmill of claim 2 wherein said deck member includes a wood member.
- 8. The exercise treadmill of claim 7 wherein said wood member has a thickness of approximately 5/8 inches.
- 9. The exercise treadmill of claim 8 wherein said deck member includes a low friction laminate applied to the top surface of said wood member.
- 10. The exercise treadmill of claim 7 wherein said support means includes a plurality of resilient support members secured between the frame structure and said deck member.
- 11. The exercise treadmill of claim 10 wherein at least a portion of said resilient support members have a variable spring constant that increases with the increase in the compression of said resilient support members.
- 12. The exercise treadmill of claim 11 wherein said portion of said resilient support members having a variable spring constant are elliptical in shape.
- 13. The exercise treadmill of claim 11 wherein at least a portion of said resilient members are cylinderical in shape.
- 14. The exercise treadmill of claim 10 wherein said resilient support members are secured between said deck member and said frame by a plurality of fastening members extending through at least a portion of said wood member and through at least a portion of each one of said resilient support members.
- 15. The exercise treadmill of claim 14 wherein said fastening members are secure to a top portion of said resilient support members.
- 16. The exercise treadmill of claim 14 wherein said fastening members are threaded bolts which extend through said deck member.
- 17. The exercise treadmill of claim 16 wherein said wood member has a thickness of approximately 5/8 inches.
