Claims
- 1. A curable matrix resin formulation comprising (a) from 99 to about 75 wt % of a mixture of 100 pbw of an epoxy resin, from 10 to 200 pbw of a terminally reactive, amine-terminated aromatic oligomer having a number average molecular weight greater than about 1000, and from 6 to 150 pbw of at least one aromatic diamine hardener; and (b) from 1 to about 25 wt % of cross-linked carboxylated rubber particles having a Tg above about 15.degree. C. and a smallest dimension in the range of from about 1 to about 75 microns, said particles formed by spray drying a carboxylated rubber having from 0.1 to 5 wt % carboxyl functionality selected from the group consisting of carboxylated diene rubbers, carboxylated acrylic rubbers, and mixtures thereof.
- 2. The curable matrix resin formulation of claim 1 wherein said carboxylated rubber is a carboxylated nitrile rubber having a Tg above about 15.degree. C. and a carboxyl content of from about 1 to about 4 wt %.
- 3. The curable matrix resin formulation of claim 1 wherein said rubber particles are formed by spray drying a cross-linked carboxylated rubber selected from the group consisting of carboxylated styrene-butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber and carboxylated acrylic rubber.
- 4. The curable matrix formulation of claim 1 wherein said amine-terminated aromatic oligomer is an amine-terminated polysulfone oligomer.
- 5. The curable matrix formulation of claim 1 wherein said amine-terminated aromatic oligomer is an amine-terminated polysulfone oligomer derived from p-aminophenol, dichlorodiphenyl sulfone and bisphenol A.
- 6. An improved epoxy matrix resin formulation capable of being cured to form a phase-separated morphology including a glassy discontinuous phase dispersed in a glassy continuous phase, said formulation comprising (a) from 99 to about 75 wt % of a curable mixture of at least one epoxy resin, a terminally reactive, amine-terminated aromatic oligomer having a number average molecular weight greater than about 1000, and at least one aromatic diamine hardener; and (b) from 1 to about 25 wt % of particulate modifier, the improvement wherein said particulate modifier comprises cross-linked carboxylated rubber particles having a Tg above about 15.degree. C. and a smallest dimension in the range of from about 1 to about 75 microns, said particles formed by spray drying a carboxylated rubber having from 0.1 to 5 wt % carboxyl functionality selected from the group consisting of carboxylated diene rubbers, carboxylated acrylic rubbers, and mixtures thereof.
- 7. The improved epoxy matrix resin formulation of claim 6 wherein said carboxylated rubber is a carboxylated styrene-butadiene-acrylonitrile terpolymer rubber.
- 8. The improved epoxy matrix resin formulation of claim 6 wherein said curable mixture comprises 100 pbw of at least one epoxy resin, from 10 to 200 pbw of said terminally reactive, amine-terminated aromatic oligomer and from 6 to 150 pbw of at least one aromatic diamine hardener.
- 9. The improved epoxy matrix resin formulation of claim 6 wherein said amine-terminated aromatic oligomer is an amine-terminated polysulfone oligomer.
