Claims
- 1. A tool for setting in a tubular downhole, comprising:
a mandrel; a gripping member disposed about said mandrel; an expansion device acting on said mandrel to radially expand said mandrel to allow contact of the tubular by said gripping member.
- 2. The tool of claim 1, wherein:
said gripping member comprises at least one slip disposed on said mandrel without any cone.
- 3. The tool of claim 2, wherein:
said at least one slip comprises a plurality of extending slips retained by a ring to said mandrel and defining gaps in between to decrease resistance to an expansion force delivered by said expansion device through said mandrel.
- 4. The tool of claim 2, wherein:
said at least one slip comprises a plurality of extending slips integrally formed with said mandrel and defining gaps in between to decrease resistance to an expansion force delivered by said expansion device through said mandrel.
- 5. The tool of claim 1, further comprising:
an extension device to radially retract said mandrel by longitudinally extending said mandrel to get said gripping member to release from the tubular.
- 6. The tool of claim 5, wherein:
said extension device extends said mandrel longitudinally to the point of failure to allow said gripping member to release from the tubular.
- 7. The tool of claim 6, wherein:
said mandrel has a thin walled portion that is designed to fail in tension from a force provided by said extension device.
- 8. The tool of claim 5, wherein:
said extension device comprises at least one piston extendable under applied pressure, said piston engaging a first position on said mandrel while a body engages another position on said mandrel, whereupon extension of said piston extends said mandrel to release said gripping member.
- 9. The tool of claim 5, wherein:
said extension device is insertable into said mandrel through tubing that supports said mandrel or on tubing when no such tubing is present.
- 10. The tool of claim 8, wherein:
said at least one piston comprises a plurality of pistons, at least one of which engages said mandrel, said pistons configured in said body to provide an intensification of the applied pressure for an increase, in said body, of the force applied to extend said mandrel.
- 11. The tool of claim 2, further comprising:
a sealing element mounted on said mandrel and pushed against the tubular by said mandrel when radially expanded by said expansion device.
- 12. The tool of claim 1, wherein:
said gripping member is moved into sealing contact with the tubular by the action of said expansion device acting on said mandrel.
- 13. The tool of claim 12, wherein:
sealing contact of the tubular by said gripping member is accomplished without appreciable expansion of the tubular.
- 14. The tool of claim 1, wherein:
said expansion device comprises tubing connected to said mandrel and a pressure intensifier delivered through said tubing to apply expansion pressure to said mandrel so that said gripping member engages the tubular.
- 15. The tool of claim 1, wherein:
said expansion device comprises a hydraulic or wireline setting tool to selectively deliver the expansion force to said mandrel and to subsequently release from said mandrel.
- 16. The tool of claim 15, further comprising:
a pressure intensifier on said setting tool to enhance the expansion force on said mandrel.
- 17. The tool of claim 11, wherein:
an extension device to radially retract said mandrel by longitudinally extending said mandrel to get said gripping member and said sealing element to release from the tubular.
- 18. The tool of claim 1, wherein:
said gripping member contacts the tubular to support said mandrel without appreciable expansion of the tubular.
- 19. The tool of claim 2, wherein:
said at least one slip engages the tubular to support said mandrel without appreciable expansion of the tubular.
- 20. A method of running a first tubular with respect to a second tubular in a wellbore, comprising:
longitudinally extending said first tubular to retract it from said second tubular.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein:
using a screen, a liner, a packer, or an anchor as said first tubular.
- 22. The method of claim 20, wherein:
inserting the first tubular in to the second tubular; expanding said first tubular into said second tubular for support; and removing said first tubular.
- 23. The method of claim 22, wherein:
said first tubular is expanded or retracted multiple times downhole with respect to said second tubular without tripping out of the wellbore.
- 24. The method of claim 18, wherein:
inserting a telescoping tool into said first tubular in a location where it is in contact with said second tubular; gripping said first tubular in two places; expanding said telescoping tool.
