Claims
- 1. An expandable tire building former which in one state has a cylindrical shape and in another state has a frusto-conical shape and which comprises a cylindrical central portion formed from a plurality of radially expandable axially extending central protion segments; two side portions located one on each axial side of the central portion each formed from a plurality of axially extending side portion segments, the axially inner ends of the side portion segments of each side portion being connected to the adjacent axially outer ends of the central portion segments by inter-engaging tongues and grooves so that the side portion sgements can pivot relative to the central portion segments.
- 2. An expandable tire building former as claimed in claim 1 and further comprising a pair of wedge members having tapered surfaces for engagement with taper surfaces on the central portion segments whereby the central portion segments are movable radially by axial movement of the wedge members.
- 3. An expandable tire building former as claimed in claim 2 wherein the tapered surfaces on the central segment are formed on plates connected to the central segments which are radially slidably mounted on a central location means.
- 4. A former according to claim 1 wherein the said inter-engaging tongues and grooves are arranged so that when radially outward movement of the axially inner ends of the side portion segments is resisted, the side portion segments can be tilted by further radially outward movement of the central portion segments so as to move the axially outer ends of the side portion segments radially outwards to a greater extent than their axially inner ends.
- 5. A former according to claim 4 wherein the central portion segments have an outer layer of compressible material.
- 6. A former according to claim 1 wherein the central portion and side portion segments are covered by a rubber sleeve.
- 7. A former according to claim 6 wherein the rubber sleeve is arranged to be located in a fixed axial position on the former.
- 8. A former according to claim 1 wherein the axially inner end portion of the side portion segments are chamfered so as to provide a smooth cylindrical surface when the former is in its frusto-conical state.
- 9. A former according to claim 1 wherein the axially inner end portions of side portion segments are rounded.
