Claims
- 1. Valve apparatus comprising: a wall having a port; a seat surrounding said port on one side of said wall; valve means responsive to a closing force resulting from an instantaneous velocity of fluid flow through said port and adapted to move into engagement with said seat to close said port; and restraining means on the opposite side of said wall from said seat for providing an inhibiting force that holds said valve means substantially motionless until said closing force exceeds said inhibiting force.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said restraining means is adjustable to vary said inhibiting force in use.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said restraining means includes an electromagnetic means, said inhibiting force being adjustable by varying the electric current through said electromagnetic means.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said electromagnetic means includes a coil around a magnetic circuit, movement of said valve means from said restrained position imposing a gap in said circuit.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said port and valve means have a first dimension that is transverse to the direction of movement of said valve means which is smaller than their dimension perpendicular to said first dimension to provide a relatively short structural span which reduces the mass of said valve means and its closure time at a selected differential pressure.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 further including means for adjusting the spacing at which said valve means is restrained from said seat in order to vary the said closing force.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein said adjusting means comprises axial cam means.
- 8. Valve apparatus comprising; a wall having a first port; a first seat surrounding said first port on one side of said wall; first valve means responsive to a closing force resulting from an instantaneous velocity of fluid flow through said first port; first restraining means for providing an inhibiting force that restrains closing of said first valve means until said closing force exceeds said inhibiting force; a second seat surrounding said port on the opposite side of said wall; second flow responsive valve means cooperating with said second seat to control fluid flow therethrough; and spacing means acting through said port for preventing said first and second valve means from seating completely on their respective seats at the same time.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 further including means for varying said inhibiting force to selectively change the rate or velocity of fluid flow at which said first valve means will move to its closed position against said first seat.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 8 further including second restraining means for providing a second inhibiting force that resists closing of said second valve means, said second restraining means being located on the same side of said wall as said first restraining means.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein each of said first and second restraining means comprises an electromagnetic element that when energized by electric current produces an inhibiting force on a respective one of said valve means that opposes the closing force thereon due to fluid flow.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein at least a part of said inhibiting force is provided by an electromagnetic means that when energized by current exerts restraining force on said first valve means that opposes the closing forces thereon due to fluid flow.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 8 further including means for adjusting the spacing at which said valve means is restrained from its seat in order to vary the force tending to close it.
