Claims
- 1. A circuit board retaining apparatus for retaining a circuit board in a computer system comprising:a channel; and a card retaining member slidably coupled within said channel; wherein the circuit board is retained by said retaining member when said retaining member is in a first position and the circuit board is not retained by said retaining member when said retaining member is in a second position, the retaining member having a surface to contact the circuit board when the retaining member is in the first position, and to not contact the circuit board when the retaining member is in the second position.
- 2. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 1 wherein said channel includes a tapered portion in which the opening defined by said channel is wider at a first end than at a second end to prevent said card retaining member from moving unimpeded from said channel.
- 3. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 2 wherein said card retaining member includes a protrusion for interfering with a portion of the second end of said channel to prevent said card retaining member from moving unimpeded from said channel.
- 4. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 1 wherein the circuit board retained is a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) circuit board.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein actuating the locking mechanism comprises actuating a ratchet mechanism.
- 6. A circuit board retaining apparatus for retaining a circuit board in a computer system comprising:a channel; and a card retaining member slidably coupled within said channel; wherein the circuit board is retained by said retaining member when said retaining member is in a first position and the circuit board is not retained by said retaining member when said retaining member is in a second position, wherein said channel includes a tapered portion in which the opening defined by said channel is wider at a first end than at a second end to prevent said card retaining member from moving unimpeded from said channel, wherein said card retaining member includes a relief cut for enhancing compression of a portion of said card retaining member when said card retaining member is moved through the second end of said channel.
- 7. A circuit board retaining apparatus for retaining a circuit board in a computer system comprising:a channel; and a card retaining member slidably coupled within said channel; wherein the circuit board is retained by said retaining member when said retaining member is in a first position and the circuit board is not retained by said retaining member when said retaining member is in a second position, wherein said card retaining member includes a plurality of ratchet teeth on the side of said card retaining member adjacent to the trough of said channel.
- 8. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 7 further comprising a ratchet finger for engaging the ratchet teeth of said card retaining member when the ratchet finger is in a first position.
- 9. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 8 wherein the ratchet finger extends through the trough of said channel.
- 10. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 8 further comprising a designator for urging the ratchet finger to the first position when the designator is in a second position.
- 11. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 9 wherein the designator is a cam lock and the first position of the designator is the unlocked position and the second position of the designator is the locked position.
- 12. A circuit board retaining apparatus for retaining a circuit board in a computer system comprising:a retaining structure coupled to a computer system chassis; and a card retaining member coupled to said retaining structure for exerting a force on the circuit board to retain the circuit board in connection with a computer system motherboard, said card retaining member including: a joint member movably coupled to said retaining structure, and a one way locking mechanism for engaging said retaining structure to allow movement of said card retaining member in a first direction, but not in a second direction.
- 13. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 12 wherein said retaining structure is removably coupled to the chassis.
- 14. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 12 wherein said retaining structure is a hinged panel hingedly coupled to the chassis.
- 15. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 12 wherein said card retaining member is hingedly coupled through the joint member to said retaining structure.
- 16. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 12 wherein said card retaining member is slidably coupled through the joint member to said retaining structure.
- 17. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 16 wherein said retaining structure includes a channel for accepting said card retaining member in sliding engagement.
- 18. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 17 wherein the circuit board is retained by said retaining member when said retaining member is in a first position and the circuit board is not retained by said retaining member when said retaining member is in a second position.
- 19. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 17 wherein the channel includes a tapered portion in which the opening defined by the channel is wider at a first end than at a second end to prevent said card retaining member from moving unimpeded from the channel.
- 20. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 19 wherein said card retaining member includes a protrusion for interfering with a portion of the second end of the channel to prevent said card retaining member from moving unimpeded from the channel.
- 21. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 19 wherein said card retaining member includes a relief cut for enhancing compression of a portion of said card retaining member when said card retaining member is moved through the second end of the channel.
- 22. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 12 wherein the one way locking mechanism includes a plurality of ratchet teeth.
- 23. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 22 further comprising a ratchet finger for engaging the ratchet teeth when the ratchet finger is in a first position.
- 24. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 23 further comprising a designator for urging the ratchet finger to the first position when the designator is in a second position.
- 25. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 24 wherein the designator is a cam lock and the second position of the designator is the unlocked position and the second position of the designator is the locked position.
- 26. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 12 wherein the circuit board retained is a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) circuit board.
- 27. A hinged panel for retaining an expansion board in connection with a motherboard of a computer system comprising:a hinge along a first edge of said panel for coupling said panel to a chassis of the computer system; an expansion board retaining member positioned away from said hinge such that by rotating said panel about said hinge to a first position said expansion board retaining member is positioned to secure an expansion board in connection with the motherboard, and such that by rotating said panel to a second position said expansion board is not secured by said expansion board retaining member; and a locking mechanism to maintain a position of the retaining member.
- 28. A hinged panel for retaining an expansion board in connection with a motherboard of a computer system comprising:a hinge along a first edge of said panel for coupling said panel to a chassis of the computer system; an expansion board retaining member positioned away from said hinge such that by rotating said panel about said hinge to a first position said expansion board retaining member is positioned to secure an expansion board in connection with the motherboard, and such that by rotating said panel to a second position said expansion board is not secured by said expansion board retaining member and said panel is removed from an opening in the chassis to allow access to internal components of the computer system; and a lock mechanism for securing a second edge of said panel relative to the chassis, the long dimension of the second edge of said panel being substantially perpendicular to the axes of said hinge.
- 29. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 28 wherein the expansion board retained is a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) expansion board.
- 30. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 28 wherein the expansion board retained is a video adapter board.
- 31. A hinged panel for retaining an expansion board in connection with a motherboard of a computer system comprising:a hinge along a first edge of said panel for coupling said panel to a chassis of the computer system; and an expansion board retaining member positioned away from said hinge such that by rotating said panel about said hinge to a first position said expansion board retaining member is positioned to secure an expansion board in connection with the motherboard, and such that by rotating said panel to a second position said expansion board is not secured by said expansion board retaining member and said panel is removed from an opening in the chassis to allow access to internal components of the computer system, wherein said expansion board retaining member includes: a joint member movably coupling said expansion board retaining member to portions of said panel, and a one way locking mechanism for releasably engaging said hinged panel to allow movement of said expansion board retaining member in a first direction, but not in a second direction.
- 32. The hinged panel of claim 31 wherein said expansion board retaining member is hingedly coupled through the joint member to portions of said panel.
- 33. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 31 wherein said expansion board retaining member is slidably coupled through the joint member to portions of said panel.
- 34. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 31 wherein said panel includes a channel for accepting the joint member.
- 35. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 34 wherein the channel includes a tapered portion in which the opening defined by the channel is wider at a first end than at a second end to prevent said expansion board retaining member from moving unimpeded from the channel.
- 36. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 35 wherein said expansion board retaining member includes a protrusion for interfering with a portion of the second end of the channel to prevent said card retaining member from moving unimpeded from the channel.
- 37. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 35 wherein said expansion board retaining member includes a relief cut for enhancing compression of a portion of said card retaining member when said card retaining member is moved through the second end of the channels.
- 38. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 31 wherein the one way locking mechanism includes a plurality of ratchet teeth.
- 39. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 38 further comprising a ratchet finger for engaging the ratchet teeth when the ratchet finger is in a first position.
- 40. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 39 further comprising a designator for urging the ratchet finger to the first position when the designator is in a second position.
- 41. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 40 wherein the designator is a cam lock and the first position of the designator is the unlocked position and the second position of the designator is the locked position.
- 42. The circuit board retaining apparatus of claim 40 further comprising a lock mechanism for securing a second edge of said panel relative to the chassis, the long dimension of the second edge of said panel being substantially perpendicular to the axis of said hinge, wherein an actuator for the lock mechanism is also the designator.
- 43. A computer system comprising:a computer chassis; a first circuit board including a socket, said first circuit board being coupled to said computer chassis; a power supply coupled to said computer chassis and electrically connected to said first circuit board; a memory module connected to said first circuit board; a second circuit board connected to said first circuit board through the socket of the first circuit board; a retaining structure coupled to the chassis; and a card retaining member coupled to said retaining structure for exerting a force on said second circuit board to retain said second circuit board in connection with said first circuit board, said card retaining member including: a joint member movably coupled to said retaining structure, and a one way locking mechanism for engaging said retaining structure to allow movement of said card retaining member in a first direction, but not in a second direction.
- 44. The computer system of claim 43 wherein said first circuit board is a computer system motherboard.
- 45. The computer system of claim 43 wherein said second circuit board is a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) expansion board.
- 46. A method of securing an expansion board relative to a motherboard in a computer system chassis comprising the acts of:opening a panel of the computer system chassis wherein the panel includes a card retaining member; inserting the expansion board into a connector of the motherboard; closing the panel to cause the card retaining member to align with an expansion board; moving the card retaining member toward the expansion board until the card retaining member engages with the expansion board to secure the expansion board relative to the motherboard; and actuating a locking mechanism to maintain a position of the card retaining member.
- 47. The method of claim 46 wherein the act of opening the panel of the computer system chassis includes the act of pivoting the panel about a hinge between the panel and the computer system chassis.
- 48. A method of securing an expansion board relative to a motherboard in a computer system chassis comprising the acts of:opening a panel of the computer system chassis wherein the panel includes a card retaining member; inserting the expansion board into a connector of the motherboard; closing the panel to cause the card retaining member to align with an expansion board; moving the card retaining member toward the expansion board until the card retaining member engages with the expansion board to secure the expansion board relative to the motherboard; and locking the panel relative to the chassis after the act of closing the panel.
- 49. The method of claim 48 wherein the act of locking the panel engages a one way locking mechanism such that the card retaining member can only be moved toward the expansion board.
