Claims
- 1. In a DOCSIS communications system having an upstream channel and a downstream channel, a method of identifying a message collision in the upstream channel, comprising the steps of:
detecting a message collision in the upstream channel of the DOCSIS communications system; and generating a media access protocol (MAP) message having a plurality of fields, the generating step including the step of identifying said message collision in an unused field of the MAP message.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of;
sending the MAP message to a plurality of modems that are served by the DOCSIS communications system.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of generating includes the step of identifying the message collision in an explicit congestion notification (ECN) field of the MAP message.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the ECN field is a reserved field in a standard Data Over Cable Interface Specification 1.1 (DOCSIS 1.1) MAP message.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the ECN field is an 8 bit field in the MAP message.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein said message collision occurs during initial ranging.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein one of the bits of the ECN field is used to indicate an initial maintenance congestion.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the initial maintenance congestion bit is 0 if there is no initial maintenance congestion on the upstream channel.
- 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the initial maintenance congestion bit is 1 if there is initial maintenance congestion on the upstream channel.
- 10. The method of claim 4, wherein the ECN field includes at least one sub-field.
- 11. The method of claim 4, wherein the ECN field includes a sub-field that indicates a first priority threshold for the plurality of modems to register on the upstream channel.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein at least one modem compares its priority status with the first priority threshold in the ECN field of the MAP message, and registers for the upstream channel if its priority status is or equal to or above the first priority threshold in the ECN field.
- 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the at least one modem generates a random number to represent its priority status.
- 14. The method of claim 12, wherein the at least one modem waits a predetermined amount of time when registration fails.
- 15. The method of claim 12, further comprising the step of generating a second MAP message having a second priority threshold that is lower than said first priority threshold.
- 16. The method of claim 4, wherein the ECN field includes a sub-field that indicates whether multicast access bursts are restricted on the upstream channel.
- 17. The method of claim 16, wherein multicast access bursts are restricted on the upstream channel based on priority status of the modems.
- 18. In a DOCSIS communications system having an upstream channel, a method of communicating a characteristic of the upstream channel to a plurality of modems in the (DOCSIS) communications system, comprising the steps of:
detecting a characteristic of the upstream channel of the DOCSIS communications system; and generating a media access protocol (MAP) message for the upstream channel that identifies the characteristic of the upstream channel in a field of the MAP message.
- 19. The method of claim 1, wherein the field that carries the MAP message is an explicit congestion notification (ECN) field of the MAP message.
- 20. The method of claim 18, wherein said characteristic is a message collision in the upstream channel.
- 21. The method of claim 18, wherein said characteristic is a priority threshold for said modems to access said upstream channel.
- 22. The method of claim 18, wherein said characteristic is multicast access burst availability for said modems.
- 23. The method of claim 18, wherein said characteristic is an available bandwidth in the upstream channel.
- 24. The method of claim 18, wherein said characteristic is a number of modems using the upstream channel.
- 25. The method of claim 18, further comprising the step of sending the MAP message to the plurality of modems.
- 26. The method of claim 25, wherein the plurality of modems adapt their respective upstream channel requests based on the MAP message.
- 27. The method of claim 18, wherein the modems are satellite modems.
- 28. The method of claim 1, wherein the modems are satellite modems.
