Claims
- 1. A transmission housing comprising:
- a main gearbox portion for enclosing a plurality of gears therein; and
- a flexplate portion for connecting the main gearbox portion to an engine and for enclosing a flexplate, at least a section of the flexplate portion being integrally formed with the main gearbox portion and irremovable therefrom, wherein the flexplate portion includes a top section that surrounds a top half of a flexplate, the top section being made of an explosion resistant material.
- 2. The transmission housing of claim 1 wherein the flexplate portion includes a bottom section made of an explosion resistant material, the top and bottom sections acting to surround an entire flexplate.
- 3. A transmission housing comprising:
- a main gearbox housing for enclosing a plurality of gears therein; and
- a bell housing for connecting the gearbox housing to an engine and for enclosing a flexplate, wherein the bell housing includes a top section that surrounds a top half of the flexplate, the top section being made of an explosion resistant material, wherein the bell housing includes a bottom section made of an explosion resistant material, the top and bottom sections acting to surround the entire flexplate, wherein the bottom section of the bell housing is a removable section.
- 4. The transmission of claim 1 wherein the explosion resistant material is made from a material selected from the group consisting of steel, composite, titanium and aluminum.
- 5. A transmission housing comprising:
- a main gearbox housing for enclosing a plurality of gears therein; and
- a bell housing for connecting the gearbox housing to an engine and for enclosing a flexplate, wherein the bell housing includes a top section that surrounds a top half of the flexplate, the top section being made of an explosion resistant material, wherein the top section is substantially thicker than a rearwardly adjacent portion of the top of the bell housing.
- 6. The transmission of claim 1 wherein the top section includes an outer portion and an inner liner in intimate contact with the outer portion, the inner liner being located between the outer portion and a flexplate.
- 7. The transmission of claim 2 wherein the top and bottom sections include outer portions and a single inner liner that spans along the outer portions of the top and bottom sections in intimate contact therewith and is located between the outer portions and a flexplate.
