Claims
- 1. A feed composition for animals which comprises a phytase recombinantly produced in plants, wherein said phytase is recombinantly produced by a method which comprises
- providing an expression construct which contains a nucleotide sequence encoding a phytase operably linked to regulatory sequences that direct the expression of the nucleotide sequence encoding phytase in a plant cell;
- stably transforming a plant cell, plant part or plant with the expression construct;
- culturing the plant cell, plant part or plant under conditions wherein the phytase-encoding nucleotide sequence is expressed; and
- processing the plant cell, plant part or plant under conditions appropriate for use of said phytase in an animal feed composition.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the phytase is of a plant source.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein said phytase has been recovered and purified from said plant cell, plant part or plant.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the phytase catalyzes the liberation of inorganic phosphate from myoinositol hexakis-phosphate.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the step of processing the plant cell, plant part or plant comprises the additional step of grinding said plant cells, plant parts or plants.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the step of processing said plant cell, plant part or plant comprises the additional step of combining said plant cells, plant parts or plants with other components appropriate in a composition for hydrolysis of phytate.
- 7. A method to promote the growth of an animal and reduce the level of phytate in the feces of said animal, which method comprises feeding said animal the feed composition of claim 1.
