Claims
- 1. An extendable conveyor for conveying articles between a particular location and a selectable variable location, comprising:
- a support structure;
- a mechanically extendable section which is extendable along a longitudinal axis between a fully retracted position and a fully extended position, said mechanically extendable section supported in a cantilever fashion by said support structure, said mechanically extendable section having a first conveying surface; and,
- a user interface section which is horizontally and longitudinally adjustable with respect to said longitudinal axis of said extendable section, said user interface section having a second conveying surface, wherein said user interface section is supported in a cantilever fashion by said mechanically extendable section.
- 2. The extendable conveyor of claim 1 wherein said user interface section is also vertically adjustable with respect to said mechanically extendable section.
- 3. The extendable conveyor of claim 2 wherein said user interface section is vertically adjustable between an upper and a lower limit and said mechanically extendable section is vertically upwardly adjustable after said user interface section has been adjusted to said upper limit and is vertically adjustable downwardly after said user interface section has been extended to said lower limit.
- 4. The extendable conveyor of claim 3 wherein said user interface section and said mechanically extendable section are vertically adjustable by mechanical power.
- 5. The extendable conveyor of claim 3 wherein said user interface section and said mechanically extendable section can vertically adjust said user interface section to be in contact with a floor defined in said selectable variable location.
- 6. The extendable conveyor of claim 1 wherein said user interface section is longitudinally movable only along a portion of said mechanically extendable section when said mechanically extendable section is extended.
- 7. The extendable conveyor of claim 1 wherein the horizontal adjustability of said user interface section is manually powered.
- 8. The extendable conveyor of claim 1 wherein said user interface section includes a conveying surface.
- 9. An extendable conveyor for conveying articles between a particular location and a selectable variable location, comprising:
- a support structure;
- a mechanically extendable section which is extendable along a longitudinal axis between a fully retracted position and a fully extended position, said mechanically extendable section supported in a cantilever fashion by said support structure, said mechanically extendable section having a first conveying surface; and
- a user interface section horizontally adjustable with respect to said longitudinal axis of said extendable section, said user interface section being longitudinally movable along said mechanically extendable section when said mechanically extendable section is fully retracted, said user interface section having a second conveying surface, and said user interface section also being supported in a cantilever fashion by said mechanically extendable section.
- 10. The extendable conveyor of claim 9 wherein said user interface section is manually movable along said mechanically extendable section when said mechanically extendable section is fully retracted.
- 11. The extendable conveyor of claim 9 wherein said mechanically extendable section is extendable between a fully extended position and a fully retracted position only when said user interface section has been moved adjacent a forward end of said mechanically extendable section.
- 12. An extendable conveyor for conveying articles between a particular location and a selectable variable location, comprising:
- a base unit;
- a mechanically extendable section which is extendable along a longitudinal axis between a fully retracted position and a fully extended position, said mechanically extendable section supported in a cantilever fashion by said base unit said mechanically extendable section having a first conveying surface; and,
- a user interface section which is horizontally adjustable with respect to said longitudinal axis of said extendable section, said user interface section retractable into said base unit, said interface section having a second conveying surface, wherein said user interface section is supported in a cantilever fashion by said mechanically extendable section.
- 13. An extendable conveyor for conveying articles between a particular location and a selectable variable location, comprising:
- a base unit;
- at least one extendable conveyor unit selectively nested within said base unit, said at least one extendable conveyor unit adjustably positionable incrementally between a fully nested position within said base unit and a fully extended position telescoped forwardly from said base unit, said at least one extendable conveyor unit having a conveying surface; and,
- a user interface section pivotable about a pivot axis and capable of receiving articles from the extendable conveyor units, said user interface section adjustably positionable between a fully nested position within said base unit and a fully extended position extending forwardly from one of said at least one extendable conveyor units which is the furthermost extendable from said base unit.
- 14. The extendable conveyor of claim 13 wherein said user interface section is horizontally pivotable with respect to said pivot axis, said pivot axis being vertical.
- 15. The extendable conveyor of claim 13 wherein said user interface section vertically pivotable about said pivot axis, said pivot being horizontal.
- 16. The extendable conveyor of claim 15 wherein said user interface section is vertically pivotable between an upper and a lower limit and said at least one extendable conveyor unit is vertically pivotable about a support pivot after said user interface section has been pivoted to said upper or lower limit.
- 17. The extendable conveyor of claim 15 wherein the vertical pivoting of said user interface section about said horizontal axis is mechanically powered.
- 18. The extendable conveyor of claim 16 wherein said user interface section is vertically pivotable down to a lower position in contact with a floor defined in said selectable variable location.
- 19. The extendable conveyor of claim 13 wherein said user interface section is longitudinally movable along substantially the entire length of said at least one extendable conveyor unit only when said at least one extendable conveyor unit is in a fully retracted position.
- 20. The extendable conveyor of claim 19 wherein said user interface section is longitudinally movable along the furthermost extendable of said at least one extendable conveyor units by manual power.
- 21. The extendable conveyor of claim 19 wherein said user interface section is longitudinally movable only along a portion of said at least one extendable conveyor unit when said at least one extendable conveyor unit is fully extended.
- 22. The extendable conveyor of claim 21 wherein said portion of the length of the furthermost extendable of said at least one extendable conveyor units is defined between a rearward set of interlocks and a forward stop.
- 23. The extendable conveyor of claim 19 wherein said at least one extendable conveyor unit is extendable from a fully retracted position only when said user interface section is positioned adjacent a forward portion of said at least one extendable conveyor unit.
- 24. The extendable conveyor of claim 23 including a proximity sensor which detects the presence of said user interface section when said user interface section has been extended to said forward position of said at least one extendable conveyor unit, and said extendable conveyor unit is extendable only when said proximity sensor has detected the presence of said user interface section.
- 25. The extendable conveyor of claim 15 wherein the horizontal pivoting of said horizontally pivotable user interface section is manually powered.
- 26. An extendable conveyor for conveying articles between a particular location and a selectable variable location, comprising:
- a base unit;
- at least one extendable conveyor unit, said at least one extendable conveyor unit having a first conveying surface extendable along a longitudinal axis, said at least one extendable conveyor unit adjustably positionable incrementally between a retracted position and a fully extended position telescoped forwardly from said base unit; and,
- a user interface section which includes a carriage assembly movably supported by a set of extendable unit roller bars mounted to the furthermost extendable of said at least one extendable conveyor units, and a boom having a second conveying surface, said boom pivotally mounted to said carriage assembly to thereby permit both vertical and horizontal pivoting of said boom with respect to said carriage assembly.
- 27. The extendable conveyor of claim 26 wherein said second conveying surface is an endless belt reaved on a set of belt rollers.
- 28. The extendable conveyor of claim 27 further including a motorized belt roller for powering said endless belt.
- 29. The extendable conveyor of claim 28 wherein said boom further includes a horizontal pivot axis positioned at a turning axis of said motorized roller whereby said boom is vertically pivotable about said horizontal pivot axis.
- 30. The extendable conveyor of claim 26 further including an electrical cable extending from said base unit to said carriage assembly and a cable retracting mechanism attached to said furthermost extendable of said at least one extendable conveyor units, said cable retracting mechanism releasing cable when said carriage assembly is extended forwardly and retrieving cable when said carriage assembly is extended rearwardly.
- 31. An extendable conveyor for conveying articles between a particular location and a selectable variable location, comprising:
- a base unit;
- at least one extendable conveyor unit, said at least one extendable conveyor unit having a first conveying surface extendable along a longitudinal axis, said at least one extendable conveyor unit adjustably positionable incrementally between a fully nested position within said base unit and a fully extended position telescoped forwardly from said base unit; and,
- a user interface section which includes a carriage assembly movably supported by a set of extendable unit roller bars mounted to the furthermost extendable of said at least one extendable conveyor units, and a boom having a second conveying surface, said boom pivotally mounted to said carriage assembly to thereby permit horizontal pivoting of said boom with respect to said carriage assembly; wherein said base unit houses said at least one extendable conveyor unit when said extendable conveyor is retracted to a fully retracted position, said base unit including a set of base roller bars, said carriage assembly being movable longitudinally between said extendable unit roller bars on said at least one extendable conveyor unit and said base roller bars on said base unit when said at least one extendable conveyor unit is fully retracted within said base unit.
- 32. The extendable conveyor of claim 31 further including:
- a pair of rearward support rollers, each of said pair of rearward support rollers mounted to a rearward end of said sides of said carriage assembly, each of said rearward support rollers positioned to engage a bottom surface of said base roller bars and said extendable unit roller bars; and,
- a pair of forward support rollers, each of said pair of forward support rollers mounted to sides of said carriage assembly forwardly of said rearward support rollers, each of said forward support rollers positioned to engage a top surface of said base roller bars and said extendable unit roller bars.
- 33. The extendable conveyor of claim 31 further including forward stops mounted to a forward end of said extendable unit roller bars, said forward stops preventing said carriage assembly from rolling forwardly off of said extendable unit roller bars.
- 34. The extendable conveyor of claim 31 further including a pair of rearward interlocks located at a rear end of said extendable unit roller bars on said at least one extendable conveyor units, said rearward interlocks automatically preventing said carriage assembly from moving from said extendable unit roller bars to said base roller bars unless said extendable unit roller bars and said base roller bars are in abutting contact.
- 35. The extendable conveyor of claim 34 wherein each of said rearward interlocks includes:
- a stop lever rotatable between position blocking said extendable unit roller bars and a position unblocking said extendable unit roller bars, said stop lever biased to said position blocking said extendable unit roller bars; and,
- a contact pin slidable in a longitudinally oriented bore in each of the extendable unit roller bars, said contact pin rotating said stop lever to said position blocking said extendable unit roller bars when said contact pin is slid in said longitudinally oriented bore by abutting against said base roller bars.
- 36. The extendable conveyor of claim 31 further including a forward set of interlocks preventing said at least one extendable conveyor unit from extending unless said carriage assembly is on said extendable unit roller bars.
- 37. The extendable conveyor of claim 31 further including a brake attached to a side of said carriage assembly, substantially preventing movement of said carriage assembly on said extendable unit or base roller bars.
- 38. An extendable conveyor for conveying articles between a particular location and a selectable variable location, comprising:
- a base unit;
- at least one extendable conveyor unit, said at least one extendable conveyor unit having a first conveying surface extendable along a longitudinal axis, said at least one extendable conveyor unit adjustable positionable incrementally between a fully nested position within said base unit and a fully extended position telescoped forwardly from said base unit;
- a user interface section which includes a carriage assembly movably supported by a set of extendable unit roller bars mounted to the furthermost extendable of said at least one extendable conveyor units, and a boom having a second conveying surface, said boom pivotally mounted to said carriage assembly to thereby permit horizontal pivoting of said boom with respect to said carriage assembly;
- an electrical cable extending from said base unit to said carriage assembly; and
- a cable retracting mechanism attached to said furthermost extendable of said at least one extendable conveyor units, said cable retracting mechanism releasing cable when said carriage assembly is extended forwardly and retrieving cable when said carriage assembly is extended rearwardly, said cable retracting mechanism including:
- a tension reel;
- a sheave about which said cable is wound partially around, said sheave longitudinally slidable; and,
- a tension wire connected at one end to said tension reel and connected at another end to a stationary point, said tension wire partially wrapped around said sheave in order to exert a rearward force on said sheave.
- 39. An extendable conveyor for conveying articles between a particular location and a selectable variable location, comprising:
- a support structure;
- at least one extendable conveyor unit having a first conveying surface along a longitudinal axis, said support structure supporting said at least one extendable conveyor unit in a cantilever fashion, said at least one extendable conveyor unit selectively extendable between a fully extended position extending forwardly from said support structure in the direction of said selectable variable location and a fully retracted position extending in a direction opposite said direction of said selectable variable location;
- a carriage assembly supportable by said at least one extendable conveyor units;
- a boom defining a second conveying surface, said boom pivotally mounted to said carriage assembly in a manner that said boom is horizontally pivotable and vertically pivotable with respect to said longitudinal axis of said at least one extendable conveyor unit; and,
- a height adjustment mechanism for vertically adjusting a forward end of said boom with respect to said at least one extendable conveyor unit, said height adjustment mechanism including at least one plate on one of said carriage assembly and said boom, a shoe on the other of said boom and said carriage assembly positioned to glide along said plate, and an actuator for extending one of said boom and said carriage assembly with respect to said plate and said shoe.
- 40. The extendable conveyor of claim 39 wherein said actuator includes a rotatable lever member, said rotatable lever member altering the vertical distance between said at least one plate and one of said boom and said carriage assembly and a linear motor for rotating said rotatable lever member in order to raise or lower said forward end of said boom with respect to said carriage assembly.
- 41. The extendable conveyor of claim 39 wherein said rotatable lever member includes:
- a first lever member having a first, a second, and a third prong, said first prong attached to one of said boom and said carriage assembly, said second prong attached to said shoe, and said third prong rotatably attached to said linear motor, whereby said linear motor rotates said at first lever member and thereby pivotally raises or lowers said boom.
- 42. The extendable conveyor of claim 41 further including:
- a torque bar attached at one end to said first lever member;
- a second lever member having a first and a second prong, said first prong of said second lever member slidingly engaging said at least one plate, said second prong of said second lever member attached to said torque bar at an end opposite said first lever member, said torque bar transferring torque to said second lever member as said first lever member is rotated.
- 43. The extendable conveyor of claim 39 further including:
- a support pivot located at a rearward end of said support structure; and
- a vertical actuator attached to said extendable conveyor, said vertical actuator capable of pivotally raising and lowering said at least one extendable unit about said support pivot.
- 44. The extendable conveyor of claim 43 wherein said boom is pivotable about said horizontal pivot between an upper limit and a lower limit and wherein said vertical actuator is activated only when said boom has reached its upper or lower limit and an operator directs said extendable conveyor to move still higher or lower.
- 45. The extendable conveyor of claim 39 wherein said first and second conveying surfaces are endless belts.
- 46. The extendable conveyor of claim 39 further including an endpiece mounted on a forward end of said boom, said endpiece enshrouding an end of said boom wherein said boom can rest against a floor without said second conveying surface contacting said floor.
- 47. The extendable conveyor of claim 39 wherein said carriage assembly is movable along said at least one extendable conveyor units.
- 48. The extendable conveyor of claim 47 further including a brake which prevents said carriage assembly from moving along said furthermost extendable of said at least one extendable conveyor unit when said brake is activated.
- 49. The extendable conveyor of claim 47 further including an electrical cable extending from said support structure to said carriage assembly and a cable retracting mechanism which automatically releases cable when said carriage assembly is moved forwardly and which automatically retrieves cable when said carriage assembly is moved rearwardly.
- 50. An extendable conveyor comprising:
- a support structure;
- at least one extendable conveyor unit extendable along a longitudinal axis, said support structure supporting said at least one extendable conveyor unit in a cantilever fashion, said at least one extendable conveyor unit selectively adjustable between a fully extended position extending forwardly from said support structure and a fully retracted position nested in said support structure;
- a user interface section longitudinally movable from said fully retracted position with respect to said support structure and said at least one extendable conveyor units; and,
- an interlock system to permit said at least one extendable unit to extend only when said user interface section is positioned on said at least one extendable conveyor unit and to prevent said user interface section from moving off of said at least one extendable conveyor unit unless said at least one extendable conveyor unit is in said fully retracted position.
- 51. The extendable conveyor of claims 50 wherein said interlock system includes an electrical forward set of interlocks and a mechanical rearward set of interlocks.
- 52. The extendable conveyor of claim 51 wherein said electrical forward set of interlocks includes at least one proximity sensor which detects the presence of said user interface section when said user interface section has been positioned on said furthermost extendable conveyor unit.
- 53. The extendable conveyor of claim 52 further including:
- a pair of extendable unit roller bars mounted at a forward end of said furthermost extendable conveyor unit, said pair of parallel roller bars each defining a top and a bottom rolling surface;
- a pair of rearward support rollers, mounted to a rearward end of said user interface section, each of said rearward support rollers positioned to engage said bottom rolling surfaces of said pair of roller bars; and,
- a pair of forward support rollers, mounted to said user interface section forwardly of said rearward support rollers, each of said forward support rollers positioned to engage said top rolling surfaces of said pair of roller bars.
- 54. The extendable conveyor of claim 53 wherein said set of rearward interlocks are located at a rear end of each of said extendable unit roller bars, said rearward interlocks preventing said user interface section from rolling rearwardly off of said pair of extendable unit roller bars when said pair of extendable unit roller bars do not abut against a pair of substantially collinear base roller bars located on said support structure, and said set of rearward interlocks allowing said user interface section to roll onto said pair of substantially collinear base roller bars located on said support structure when said pair of extendable unit roller bars abut said base roller bars.
- 55. The extendable conveyor of claim 54 wherein each of said rearward interlocks includes:
- a stop lever rotatable between a lower position and an upper position, said stop lever movable to said lower position by the force of gravity; and,
- a contact pin slidably and partially extending into a longitudinally oriented bore in each of said roller bars, said contact pin rotating said stop lever to an upper position when said contact pin is forced further into said longitudinally oriented bore by abutting against said base roller bars.
