- a combustible tubular case extension over said sabot between said bourrelets forming an annular cavity thereunder open to the interior of said tubular cartridge case between said post portions of said aft bourrelet, said cavity containing a portion of said propellant charge.
- 2. The assembly according to claim 1 further comprising a plurality of flexible combustible ignition strands extending from said primer head through said case and said charge into said cavity between said bourrelets and into said portion of said charge.
- 3. A cartridge assembly for propelling a projectile assembly through a gun tube, said assembly comprising:
- a tubular case having a primer in one end and having an2opposite open end, said projectile assembly extending into and out of said case through said open end;
- said projectile assembly including a subcaliber elongated penetrator and a sabot encircling and gripping said penetrator, said sabot having a front bourrelet outside of said case providing a pressure barrier between said penetrator and said gun tube and an aft bourrelet having a plurality of spaced outwardly extending portions spaced rearwardly from said front bourrelet providing circumferentially spaced lateral support to a portion of said penetrator, and a tubular combustible case extension having one end attached to said open end of said case, said case extension extending beyond said case between said bourrelets to form a toroidal cavity therebetween about said sabot;
- a propellant charge in said case and in said toroidal cavity; and
- an ignition assembly supported within said case extending from said primer through said propellant charge and into said toroidal cavity so as to ignite said propellant in said toroidal cavity substantially concurrently with said propellant in said case.
- 4. The assembly according to claim 3 wherein said toroidal cavity is open through said aft bourrelet into said case.
- 5. The assembly according to claim 4 wherein said aft bourrelet further comprises at least three outwardly projecting and circumferentially spaced post portions each having an arcuate bore riding sabot shoe mounted thereto.
- 6. The assembly according to claim 3 wherein said case extension has a tubular rear portion fastened to said open end of said case and to said aft bourrelet of said sabot to secure said projectile assembly to said case.
- 7. The assembly according to claim 6 wherein said case extension has a tubular front end portion engaging said front bourrelet.
- 8. The assembly according to claim 7 wherein said rear portion of said case extension is a tubular support sleeve of combustible material slidably disposed in and bonded to said tubular case extension.
- 9. The assembly according to claim 7 wherein said assembly further comprises an annular obturator rotatably mounted on said front bourrelet.
- 10. The assembly according to claim 9 wherein said obturator has a rearwardly flared annular lip having spaced grooves in an outer surface thereof for engaging rifling in said gun tube.
- 11. The assembly according to claim 9 wherein said obturator is mounted on a plastic seal ring having an L shaped cross section disposed in an annular channel in an outer surface of said front bourrelet.
- 12. The assembly according to claim 11 wherein said front end portion of said case extension overlaps an annular flange on said front bourrelet and abuts against a raised annular rib between said flange and said channel.
- 13. The assembly according to claim 3 wherein said ignition assembly comprises:
- a cylindrical igniter strand adapter body having an open end adapted to mate and engage with said said primer, an internal ignition chamber adapted to communicate with an ignition charge in said primer, a plurality of through bores extending through said adapter into said chamber, and a tubular metal sleeve pressed into each of said bores;
- said plurality of flexible ignition strands each having one end frictionally clamped by and extending through one of said tubular sleeves so as to communicate into said ignition chamber, each of said sleeves confining a rear portion of said strand at said end in order to generate a high order propagation rate upon ignition.
- 14. The assembly according to claim 13 wherein said toroidal cavity is open through said aft bourrelet into said case.
- 15. The assembly according to claim 14 wherein said aft bourrelet further comprises at least three outwardly projecting and circumferentially spaced post portions each having an arcuate bore riding sabot shoe mounted thereto.
- 16. The assembly according to claim 13 wherein said case extension has a tubular rear portion fastened to said open end of said case and to said aft bourrelet of said sabot to secure said projectile assembly to said case.
- 17. The assembly according to claim 16 wherein said case extension has a tubular front end portion engaging said front bourrelet.
- 18. The assembly according to claim 17 wherein said rear portion of said case extension is a tubular support sleeve of combustible material slidably disposed in and bonded to said tubular case extension.
- 19. The assembly according to claim 17 wherein said assembly further comprises an annular obturator rotatably mounted on said front bourrelet.
- 20. The assembly according to claim 19 wherein said obturator has a rearwardly flared annular lip having spaced grooves in an outer surface thereof for engaging rifling in a gun tube.
- 21. The assembly according to claim 19 wherein said obturator is mounted on a plastic seal ring having an L shaped cross section disposed in an annular channel in an outer surface of said front bourrelet.
- 22. The assembly according to claim 21 wherein said front end portion of said case extension overlaps an annular flange on said front bourrelet and abuts against a raised annular rib between said flange and said channel.
