- 2. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said pattern of light is generated by at least one light emitting diode.
- 3. The mirror system of claim 2 wherein said pattern of light is red or amber.
- 4. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said reflective element is an electroptic mirror.
- 5. The mirror system of claim 4 wherein said reflective element is an electrochromic mirror.
- 6. The mirror system of claim 1 wherein said lens is a filtering lens wherein said pattern of light is red or amber.
- 7. An exterior mirror system for a vehicle comprising:
- an exterior mirror including a reflective element and a housing for said reflective element; and
- first and second signal lights, each incorporated in said housing and adapted to projecting a pattern of light from said housing generally rearwardly of the vehicle, wherein each said pattern of light is restricted from extending forward of the vehicle and extends laterally away from the side of the vehicle so that a driver of the vehicle does not directly intercept said pattern of light, one of said signal lights connected with a stoplight circuit in order to actuate said one of said signal lights when the stoplight circuit is being actuated and the other of said signal lights connected with a turn signal circuit of the vehicle in order to actuate said other of said signal lights when the turn signal circuit is being actuated.
- 8. The minor system of claim 7 wherein each said pattern can be observed directly by a driver of another vehicle passing said vehicle and each said pattern of light includes a minor intensity portion which can be observed indirectly by a driver of said vehicle.
- 9. The mirror system of claim 7 wherein each of said signal lights includes at least one light-emitting diode.
- 10. The mirror system in claim 9 wherein said pattern of light projected buy said one of said signal lights is red and said pattern of light projected by said other of said signal lights is amber.
- 11. The mirror system of claim 8 wherein each of said signal lights includes at least one light emitting diode.
- 12. The mirror system in claim 11 wherein said pattern of light projected by said one of said signal lights is red and said pattern of light projected by said other of said signal lights is amber.
- 13. The mirror system of claim 7 wherein said reflective element is an electro-optic mirror.
- 14. The mirror system of claim 13 wherein said reflective element is an electrochromic mirror.
- 15. The mirror system of claim 7 including a lens covering each of said signal lights.
- 16. The mirror system of claim 15 wherein each said lines is a filtering lens wherein one said pattern of light is red and the other said pattern of light is amber.
- 17. An exterior mirror system for a vehicle having stoplights and a turn signal comprising:
- an exterior mirror including a reflective element and a housing for said reflective element;
- a first signal light incorporated in said housing and adapted to projecting a red pattern of light from said housing generally rearwardly of the vehicle and connected with a stoplight circuit in order to actuate said first signal light when the stoplight circuit is being actuated;
- a second signal light incorporated in said housing and adapted to projecting an amber pattern of light from said housing generally rearwardly of the vehicle and connected with a turn signal circuit of the vehicle in order to actuate said second signal light when the turn signal circuit is being actuated;
- wherein each said pattern of light extends laterally away from the vehicle wherein each said pattern includes a major intensity portion which can be observed directly by a driver of another vehicle passing said vehicle and said pattern includes a minor intensity portion which can be observed indirectly by a driver of said vehicle.
- 18. Th mirror system of claim 17 wherein each said signal light includes at least one light emitting diode.
- 19. The mirror system of claim 17 wherein said reflective element is an electro-optic mirror.
- 20. The mirror system of claim 19 wherein said reflective element is an electrochromic mirror.
- 21. The mirror system of claim 17 including another exterior mirror including another reflective element and another housing for said another reflective element;
- a third signal light incorporated in said another housing and adapted to projecting another red pattern of light from said another housing generally rearwardly of the vehicle and connected with the stoplight circuit in order to activate said third signal light when the stoplight circuit is being actuated; and
- a fourth signal light incorporated in said another housing and adapted to projecting another amber pattern of light from said another housing generally rearwardly of the vehicle and connected with a turn signal circuit of the vehicle in order to actuate said fourth signal light when the turn signal circuit is being actuated;
- wherein each said another pattern of light extends laterally away from the vehicle, wherein each said another pattern includes another major intensity portion which can be observed directly by a driver of another vehicle passing said vehicle and said pattern includes another minor intensity portion which can be observed indirectly by a driver of said vehicle.
