Claims
- 1. An external incontinence device comprising:
- a housing having an outer surface, an inner surface, and an outlet conduit for fluid drainage extending therethrough, said outer surface operably facing away from a para-meatal surface of a patient, said inner surface operably facing towards a para-meatal surface of a patient, said outlet conduit having an external end and an internal end for positioning adjacent a urethral meatus of the patient, said internal end of said outlet conduit extending through a central portion of said inner surface of said housing; and
- an adhesive barrier disc having a first surface, a second surface, and a third surface, said first surface being positioned on said inner surface of said housing, said second surface being positioned on an exterior side surface of said internal end of said outlet conduit, and said third surface being disposed for contacting a para-meatal surface of the patient to surround the urethral meatus of the patient, said adhesive barrier disc comprising a biocompatible material that provides an occlusive barrier against microbes and contaminants around the urethral meatus, said biocompatible material being at least one of fluid-permeable, vapor-permeable, and fluid-absorptive.
- 2. The device of claim 1, wherein said housing has a tapered lip, and said tapered lip has an oval shape.
- 3. The device of claim 1, wherein said outlet conduit further comprises an integral adaptor provided on said external end to permit attachment of said outlet conduit to various tubing connectors.
- 4. The device of claim 1, wherein said biocompatible material comprises one or more substances from the group comprising polyisobutylene-based hydrocolloids, acrylic-based hydrocolloids, and polyurethane-based hydrocolloids.
- 5. The device of claim 1, wherein said outlet conduit further comprises an antimicrobial coating provided on an inner surface of said outlet conduit.
- 6. The device of claim 1, wherein said adhesive barrier disc comprises an antimicrobial substance.
- 7. The device of claim 1, wherein said housing comprises one or more materials selected from the group consisting of polyurethanes, polystyrenes, polyvinyls, polycarbonates, polyethylenes and silicones.
- 8. The device of claim 1, wherein said adhesive barrier disc is annular.
- 9. The device of claim 1, wherein said housing is specifically adapted for attachment to a male para-meatal surface.
- 10. The device of claim 1, wherein said internal end of said outlet conduit comprises a meatal approximation ring for aligning said conduit with the urethral meatus so that said internal end of said outlet conduit communicates freely with the urethral meatus.
- 11. The device of claim 1 further comprising a protective release backing for covering and protecting said third surface of said adhesive barrier disc prior to application of said device to the para-meatal surface.
- 12. The device of claim 1, wherein said adhesive barrier disc further comprises a hydrocolloid which absorbs aqueous fluids.
- 13. The device of claim 12, wherein said hydrocolloid is formulated to adhere to the para-meatal surface.
- 14. The device of claim 1, wherein said adhesive barrier disc further comprises a microbial-barrier layer provided on said third surface of said adhesive barrier disc, said microbial-barrier layer comprising a medically active substance which prevent microbial infiltration into the urethral meatus.
- 15. The device of claim 14, wherein said microbial-barrier layer is adhesive in the presence of moisture and thereby adheres to moist mucosa, epidermis, dermis, and wound surfaces.
- 16. The device of claim 1, wherein said adhesive barrier disc extends beyond said inner surface of said housing.
- 17. The device of claim 1 further comprising at least one leaf connected to said housing, wherein said at least one leaf has an interior surface and an exterior surface and said at least one leaf is comprised of a fluid-permeable substance.
- 18. The device of claim 1 further comprising at least one leaf connected to said housing, wherein said at least one leaf has an interior surface and an exterior surface and said at least one leaf is comprised of a fluid-absorptive substance.
- 19. The device of claim 18, wherein said at least one leaf comprises a plurality of leaves, said plurality of leaves spaced from one another when attached to the para-meatal surface.
- 20. The device of claim 18, wherein said at least one leaf comprises a plurality of leaves, said plurality of leaves overlapping one another.
- 21. The device of claim 18, wherein said at least one leaf tapers away from said housing.
- 22. The device of claim 18, wherein a perimeter of said at least one leaf has no corners.
- 23. The device of claim 18, wherein said at least one leaf comprises an adhesive substance.
- 24. The device of claim 18, wherein said at least one leaf is provided with a vapor-permeable adhesive layer on said interior surface of said at least one leaf, such that said at least one leaf can be secured on a para-meatal surface.
- 25. The device of claim 24, wherein said at least one leaf further comprises at least one release backing which communicates with said vapor permeable adhesive layer on said at least one leaf such that said at least one leaf is capable of wrinkle-free application to the para-meatal surface and alignment of said internal end of said outlet conduit with a urethra is maintained.
- 26. The device of claim 25, wherein said release backing comprises:
- a carrier portion which communicates with said vapor permeable adhesive layers; and
- a pull tab which communicates with said carrier portion and extends away from said interior surface of said at least one leaf.
- 27. The device of claim 18, wherein said at least one leaf overlies portions of said external surface of said housing.
- 28. The device of claim 18, wherein said at least one leaf overlies portions of said adhesive barrier disc.
- 29. The device of claim 1 further comprising nonadhesive means for attaching said device to the para-meatal surface.
- 30. The device of claim 29, wherein said nonadhesive means further comprises a plurality of retaining straps connected to said housing.
- 31. The device of claim 29, wherein said housing further comprises a plurality of attachment points for use with said nonadhesive means.
- 32. The device of claim 29, wherein said retaining straps further comprise a plurality of adjustment buckles for changing the length of said retaining straps.
- 33. An external incontinence device comprising:
- a housing having an outer surface, an inner surface, and an outlet conduit for fluid drainage extending therethrough, said outlet conduit having an external end and an internal end for positioning adjacent a urethral meatus of a patient; and
- an adhesive barrier disc having a first surface, a second surface, and a third surface, said first surface being positioned on said inner surface of said housing, said second surface being positioned on an exterior side surface of said internal end of said outlet conduit, and said third surface being disposed for contacting a para-meatal surface of the patient to surround the urethral meatus of the patient, said adhesive barrier disc comprising a biocompatible material that provides an occlusive barrier against microbes and contaminants around the urethral meatus, said biocompatible material being at least one of fluid-permeable, vapor-permeable, and fluid-absorptive.

The present application is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 07/747,376, filed Aug. 20, 1991, now U.S. Pat. No. 5,263,947, which relates to an external incontinence device for medical use. The contents of application Ser. No. 07/747,376, U.S. Pat. No. 5,263,947 are hereby incorporated by reference.
