Claims
- 1. A polymer foam sealant backer rod adapted to be compressed between and provide a seal between two surfaces, said sealant backer rod being cellular, with the greatest percentage of the cells being open, and an integral skin covering the foam for preventing sealant from passing through the backer rod.
- 2. The foam sealant backer rod of claim 1 wherein the open cells are present in a percent sufficient to render the backer rod non-outgassing as determined by ASTM C24.32.13 (Task Group 13) Proposed Test Method for Determining Outgassing.
- 3. The foam sealant backer rod of claim 1, wherein the open cell content is at least 60%.
- 4. The polymer foam sealant backer rod of claim 1, having a density of 1.5 lbs/ft..sup.3 to about 10 lbs/ft.sup.3 and a compression resistance of 10 psi or less at 50% compression.
- 5. A backer rod for use in sealing joints comprising an open cell foam having an impervious skin.
- 6. The backer rod of claim 5 in which the rod has a density of 1.5 lbs/ft..sup.3 to about 10 lbs/ft..sup.3 and a compression resistance of 3.5 psi at 25% compression resistance.
