Claims
- 1. A multi-layer tube, comprising:
- a metal tube having an outer surface;
- a surface treatment layer bonded to the outer surface of the metal tube, wherein the surface treatment layer is selected from the group consisting of a zinc/aluminum/rare earth alloy, phosphate, chromate, and mixtures thereof;
- a first polymeric layer bonded directly to the surface treatment layer, wherein the first polymeric layer is a thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic elastomers, ionomers, nylons, fluoropolymers, and mixtures thereof;
- a second polymeric layer bonded to the first polymeric layer, wherein the second polymeric layer is a thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of nylons, thermoplastic elastomers, fluoropolymers, and mixtures thereof; and
- a third polymeric layer interposed between, and bonded to the first and second polymeric layers, wherein the third polymeric layer is a thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of ionomers, nylons, ethylene vinyl alcohol, polyolefins, and mixtures thereof.
- 2. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 1 wherein each of the first, second and third polymeric layers has a thickness ranging between about 10 to 250 microns.
- 3. The multi-layer tube of claim 1 wherein the zinc/aluminum rare earth alloy of the surface treatment layer consists essentially of:
- between about 85% and about 97% Zinc;
- between about 4% and about 15% Aluminum; and
- at least 5 ppm of a rare earth-containing alloy.
- 4. The multi-layer tube of claim 1 wherein the thermoplastic material of the first polymeric layer consists essentially of an ionomer and nylon selected from the group consisting of 12 carbon block polyamides, 11 carbon block polyamides and zinc chloride resistant 6 carbon block polyamides.
- 5. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 1 wherein the first polymeric layer consists essentially of:
- an ionomer selected from the group consisting of copolymers of styrene and acrylic acid, copolymers of ethyl acrylate and methacrylic acid, and copolymers of ethylene and methacrylic acid; and
- a nylon selected from the group consisting of 12 carbon block polyamides, 11 carbon block polyamides, and zinc chloride resistant 6 carbon block polyamides.
- 6. A multi-layer tube, comprising:
- a metal tube having an outer surface;
- a surface treatment layer bonded to the outer surface of the metal tube, wherein the surface treatment layer is selected from the group consisting of a zinc/aluminum/rare earth alloy, phosphate, chromate, and mixtures thereof;
- a first polymeric layer bonded directly to the surface treatment layer, wherein the first polymeric layer is a thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic elastomers, ionomers, nylons, fluoropolymers, and mixtures thereof; and
- a second polymeric layer bonded to the first polymeric layer, wherein the second polymeric layer is a thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of nylons, thermoplastic elastomers, fluoropolymers, and mixtures thereof.
- 7. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 6 wherein the ionomer employed in the first polymeric layer is an ethylene methacrylic acid copolymer--partial metal salt ionomer, and the nylon is Nylon 12.
- 8. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 7 wherein the ethylene methacrylic acid copolymer--partial metal salt comprises between about 10% and about 70% of the first polymeric layer, and wherein the Nylon 12 comprises between about 90% and about 30% of the first polymeric layer.
- 9. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 7 wherein the second polymeric layer consists essentially of a nylon.
- 10. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 9 wherein the second polymeric layer consists essentially of Nylon 12.
- 11. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 6 wherein the first polymeric layer has a thickness ranging between about 125 to 250 microns.
- 12. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 11 wherein the second polymeric layer has a thickness ranging between about 10 to 250 microns.
- 13. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 6 wherein the surface treatment layer is a zinc/aluminum/rare earth alloy consisting essentially of:
- between about 85% and about 97% zinc;
- between about 4% and about 15% aluminum; and
- at least 5 ppm of mischmetal.
- 14. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 13 further comprising:
- a zinc layer interposed between the outer surface of the metal tube and the surface treatment layer, the zinc layer bonded to the outer surface of the metal tube, wherein the zinc layer consists essentially of a material selected from the group consisting of zinc, zinc nickel alloys, zinc cobalt alloys, zinc aluminum alloys, and mixtures thereof.
- 15. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 13 wherein the first polymeric layer consists essentially of:
- of an ionomer selected from the group consisting of copolymers of styrene and acrylic acid, copolymers of ethyl acrylate and methacrylic acid, and copolymers of ethylene and methacrylic acid; and
- Nylon 12.
- 16. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 13 wherein the first polymeric layer consists essentially of:
- an ethylene methacrylic acid copolymer--partial metal salt ionomer in an amount between about 10% and about 70%; and
- Nylon 12 in an amount between about 90% and about 30%.
- 17. The multi-layer tube as defined in claim 16 wherein the second polymeric layer is a thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of 12 carbon block polyamides, 11 carbon block polyamides, and 6 carbon block polyamides.
- 18. The multi-layer tube of claim 6 wherein the thermoplastic material employed in the first polymeric layer consists essentially of an ionomer and a nylon, the nylon selected from the group consisting of 12 carbon block polyamides, 11 carbon block polyamides and 6 carbon block polyamides.
- 19. The multi-layer tube of claim 18 wherein the ionomer is selected from the group consisting of copolymers of styrene and acrylic acid, copolymers of ethyl acrylate and methacrylic acid, and copolymers of ethylene and methacrylic acid.
- 20. The multi-layer tube of claim 6 wherein the surface treatment layer has a weight ranging between about 36 g/m.sup.2.
- 21. A multi-layer tube comprising:
- a metal tube having an outer surface;
- a surface treatment layer bonded to the outer surface of the metal, the surface metal layer having a weight ranging between about 36 g/m.sup.2 and about 95 g/m.sup.2 wherein the surface treatment layer is selected from the group consisting of a zinc/aluminum/rare earth alloy, phosphate, chromate, and mixtures thereof;
- a first polymeric layer bonded to the surface treatment layer, wherein the first polymeric layer is selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic elastomers, ionomers, nylons, fluoropolymers, and mixtures thereof; and
- a second polymeric layer bonded to the first polymeric layer, wherein the second polymeric layer is selected from the group consisting of nylons, thermoplastic elastomers, fluoropolymers, and mixtures thereof.

This application is a divisional application of U.S. Ser. No. 08/237,610 filed on May 2, 1994 which issued as U.S. Pat. No. 5,590,691 on Jan. 7, 1997.
