Claims
- 1. An extruded, open-cell microcellular alkenyl aromatic polymer foam, comprising: an alkenyl aromatic polymer material comprising greater than 50 percent by weight of alkenyl aromatic monomeric units, the foam having an open cell content of about 70 percent or more, the foam having an average cell size of about 70 micrometers or less and the foam having a thickness of 0.95 centimeters or more.
- 2. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam has an open cell content of about 90 percent or more.
- 3. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam has an open cell content of about 95 percent or more.
- 4. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam has an average cell size of about 1 micrometer to about 30 micrometers.
- 5. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam has an average cell size of about 1 micrometer to about 20 micrometers.
- 6. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam has an average cell size of about 1 micrometer to about 10 micrometers.
- 7. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam has a density of about 16 to about 250 kilograms per cubic meter.
- 8. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam has a density of about 25 to about 100 kilograms per cubic meter.
- 9. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam has an average cell size of 5 to 70 micrometers, the foam having an open cell content of about 90 percent or more, the foam having a density of about 16 to about 250 kilograms per cubic meter, the foam comprising about greater than 70 percent by weight of alkenyl aromatic monomeric units.
- 10. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam has an average cell size of 5 to 70 micrometers the foam having an open cell content of about 95 percent or more, the foam having a density of about 25 to about 100 kilograms per cubic meter, the foam comprising about greater than 70 percent by weight of alkenyl aromatic monomeric units.
- 11. The foam of claim 9, wherein the form is an evacuated foam having an absolute pressure within its cells of about 10 torr or less.
- 12. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam is an evacuated foam having an absolute pressure within its cells of about 1 torr or less.
- 13. An evacuated foam insulation panel, the panel comprising a foam and a receptacle capable of enclosing the foam and being hermetically-sealed, the foam being situated within the receptacle, the interior of the receptacle and the foam being evacuated to an absolute pressure of about 1 torr or less, wherein the foam is the foam of claim 1.
- 14. An evacuated foam insulation panel, the panel comprising a foam and a receptacle capable of enclosing the foam and being hermetically-sealed, the foam being situated within the receptacle the interior of the receptacle and the foam being evacuated to an absolute pressure of about 0.1 torr or less, wherein the foam is the foam of claim 9.
- 15. An evacuated foam insulation panel, the panel comprising a foam and a receptacle capable of enclosing the foam and being hermetically-sealed, the foam being situated within the receptacle, the interior of the receptacle and the foam being evacuated to an absolute pressure of about 0.1 torr or less, wherein the foam is the foam of claim 10.
- 16. A fabricatable foam article, the foam article comprising an extruded, open-cell microcellular alkenyl aromatic polymer foam, comprising: an alkenyl aromatic polymer material comprising greater than 50 percent by weight of alkenyl aromatic monomeric units, the foam having an open cell content of about 70 percent or more, the foam having an average cell size of about 70 micrometers or less, the foam having a density of about 25 to about 100 kilograms per cubic meter.
- 17. The article of claim 16, the foam having an open cell content of about 90 percent or more, the foam having an average cell size of about 1 to about 30 micrometers.
- 18. The article of claim 16, the foam having an open cell content of about 95 percent or more, the foam having an average cell size of about 1 to about 20 micrometers.
- 19. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam has an average cell size of about 10 microns.
- 20. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam is an evacuated foam having an absolute pressure within its cells of about 0.1 torr or less.
- 21. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam comprises greater than 70 percent by weight of alkenyl aromatic units.
- 22. The foam of claim 1, wherein the foam comprises greater than 95 percent polystyrene.
- 23. The foam of claim 9, wherein the foam is an evacuated foam having an absolute pressure within its cells of about 0.1 torr or less.
- 24. The foam of claim 10, wherein the foam is an evacuated foam having an absolute pressure within its cells of about 0.1 torr or less.
- 25. The foam of claim 9, wherein the foam comprises greater than 95 percent polystyrene.
- 26. The foam of claim 10, wherein the foam comprises greater than 95 percent polystyrene.
- 27. The foam of claim 1, wherein the average cell size is from 5 to 30 micrometers.
- 28. The foam of claim 9, wherein the average cells size is from 5 to 30 micrometers.
- 29. The foam of claim 10, wherein the average cell size is from 5 to 30 micrometers.
- 30. The foam of claim 14, wherein the average cell size is from 5 to 30 micrometers.
- 31. The foam of claim 15, wherein the average cell size is from 5 to 30 micrometers.
- 32. The foam of claim 23, wherein the average cell size is from 5 to 30 micrometers.
- 33. The foam of claim 24, wherein the average cell size is from 5 to 30 micrometers.
