Claims
- 1. Apparatus for applying a reactant gas to an extrudable polymer comprising:
- means for containing a supply of non-fused polymer to be extruded,
- an extrusion die,
- a heatable extruder barrel having a receiving end in flow communication with said polymer supply containing means and a discharge end in flow communication with said extrusion die,
- means for feeding a supply of non-fused polymer from said containing means to the receiving end of said barrel,
- extruder screw means rotatably mounted in said barrel for moving a supply of non-fused polymer from said receiving end through said barrel and to the discharge end thereof for passage therefrom through the extrusion die,
- means for heating the extruder barrel and said non-fused polymer to fusion temperature as the polymer is moved within the barrel,
- reactant gas inlet means disposed annularly in flow communication with the interior periphery of said barrel at a position between the receiving and discharge ends thereof, said inlet means being located so as to feed said reactant gas to said barrel at a position upstream from the position in the barrel where the polymer reaches its fusion temperature,
- means for feeding a reactant gas to said reactant gas inlet means, and
- reactant by-product gas venting means disposed annularly in flow communication with the interior periphery of said barrel at a position downstream of said reactant gas inlet means.
- 2. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said extruder screw means includes an elongated rotatable member having a double screw section in an initial portion thereof extending from the receiving end of said barrel to a position therein adjacent said annular reactant gas inlet means and a single screw section in the remaining portion thereof extending to the discharge end of said barrel.
- 3. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said reactant gas inlet means includes a thin annular section in the interior periphery of said barrel having a multiplicity of annularly spaced holes extending radially therethrough, said reactant gas feeding means including means defining an annular space in flow communication with the radially outward ends of said holes.
- 4. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 including a second reactant gas inlet means disposed annularly in flow communication with the interior periphery of said barrel at a position downstream of said venting means.
- 5. Apparatus as defined in claim 1, 2, 3 or 4 wherein said venting means comprises an annular rigid porous member in the interior periphery of said barrel, means defining an annular space communicating with the exterior periphery of said porous member and a stiff bristled brush carried by said screw means for wiping the communicating interior periphery of said porous member as said screw means is rotated.
