Claims
- 1. A method for making a faceless pressure-sensitive adhesive construction comprising the steps of:
depositing a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive directly onto a release surface of a flexible substrate; and depositing a layer of film-forming material directly onto a surface of the layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive to form a single nonblocking continuous film that is, in combination with the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, sufficiently self supporting, that has a tensile strength of at least 200 psi, and that has a percent ultimate elongation of at least 50.
- 2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive and layer of film-forming material are deposited simultaneously.
- 3. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising the step of printing indica directly onto a surface of the continuous film.
- 4. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the film-forming material is selected from the group of thermoplastic polymers consisting of polyamide resins, polyester resins, polyurethane resins, polyacrylate resins, vinyl acetate resins, and mixtures thereof.
- 5. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the film-forming material is a polyamide resin.
- 6. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the film-forming material has a hot melt viscosity that is within a factor of about two times a hot melt viscosity of the pressure-sensitive adhesive.
- 7. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein during the step of depositing the layer of film-forming material, the layer of film forming material is deposited at a coat weight in the range of from 4 to 35 g/m2.
- 8. A method for making a faceless pressure-sensitive adhesive construction comprising the steps of:
depositing a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive directly onto a release surface of a flexible substrate; and depositing a non-preformed film material directly onto a surface of the layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive to form a single continuous film layer that renders the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer tack free, wherein the continuous film layer is completely nonblocking and, in combination with the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, sufficiently self supporting, and is formed from a thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of polyamide resins, polyester resins, polyurethane resins, polyacrylate resins, vinyl acetate resins, and mixtures thereof having a hot melt viscosity within a factor of about two times a hot melt viscosity of the pressure-sensitive adhesive.
- 9. The method as recited in claim 8 further comprising printing indicia directly onto a surface of the continuous film layer.
- 10. The method as recited in claim 8 wherein the continuous film layer has a minimum blocking temperature of at least 50 C for a period of 24 hours at a pressure of about 40 kilopascals.
- 11. The method as recited in claim 8 wherein the continuous film layer is formed from a polyamide resin, has a tensile strength in the range of from about 200 to 2,000 psi, and has a percent elongation in the range of from about 50 to 500.
- 12. The method as recited in claim 8 wherein during the step of depositing the layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive, the pressure-sensitive adhesive is deposited having a coat weight in the range of from 5 to 125 g/m2.
- 13. The method as recited in claim 8 wherein during the step of depositing the continuous film layer, the continuous film is deposited having a coat weight in the range of from about 4 to 35 g/m2.
- 14. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive and layer of film-forming material are deposited sequentially.
- 15. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the continuous film has a tensile strength of at least 200 psi, and has a percent elongation of at least 50.
- 16. A method for making a faceless pressure-sensitive adhesive construction comprising the steps of:
depositing a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive onto a release surface of a flexible substrate; and forming an imprintable nonblocking single continuous film layer over a surface of the pressure-sensitive adhesive by applying a non-preformed film material directly onto the surface of the pressure-sensitive adhesive.
- 17. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive and layer of film-forming material are deposited sequentially.
- 18. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the continuous film has a tensile strength of at least 200 psi, and has a percent elongation of at least 50.
