Claims
- 1. A holding portion of a fastener for fastening an element to a structural member, said holding portion comprising:
a housing having a recess and a plurality of elongated members; and a nut having a length of engagement and sized to be received in said recess; wherein said plurality of elongated members are moveable between an insertion position and an extended position.
- 2. The holding portion of claim 1, further comprising a rod, wherein
said rod is threadably received in said nut, the cross-sectional area of the rod is substantially circular, and said nut length of engagement is greater than a diameter of the rod.
- 3. The holding portion of claim 1, further comprising an annular groove in said housing, wherein
said plurality of elongated members are moved to a predetermined extended position using a compression member, and said compression member is positioned in said annular groove.
- 4. The holding portion of claim 1, wherein
said recess has a blocking shoulder to resist rotation of said nut when received in said recess.
- 5. The holding portion of claim 4, wherein
said recess has a plurality of angles and sides to provide a plurality of blocking shoulders for said sized nut.
- 6. The holding portion of claim 1, further comprising a lip on each of said elongated members.
- 7. The holding portion of claim 6, wherein
said holding portion has a cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said insertion position, and said lips are within said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said predetermined extended position.
- 8. The holding portion of claim 7, wherein said lips of said elongated members can be received in an aperture in the structural member from either side of the structural member, said aperture greater than said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area.
- 9. A holding portion of a fastener for fastening an element to a structural member, said holding portion comprising:
a housing having a plurality of elongated members; and said plurality of elongated members are moveable between an insertion position and a predetermined extended position; and a compression member positioned with said housing, wherein said plurality of elongated members move to said extended position via a radial compression upon positioning said compression member about said housing.
- 10. The holding portion of claim 9, wherein said radial compression pivotally moves said plurality of elongated members into said predetermined extended position.
- 11. The holding portion of claim 9, further comprising a lip on one of said plurality of elongated members.
- 12. The holding portion of claim 9, wherein said holding portion extended position is an at rest position.
- 13. The holding portion of claim 11, wherein
said holding portion having a cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said insertion position, and said lip is within said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said predetermined extended position.
- 14. The holding portion of claim 13, wherein said lips of said elongated members can be received in an aperture in the structural member from either side of the structural member, said aperture greater than said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area.
- 15. A method of fastening an element to a structural member, comprising the steps of:
positioning a rod with a housing of a holding portion having a plurality of elongated members; inserting said holding portion and the rod into an aperture of the structural member; moving said plurality of elongated members to a predetermined extended position after insertion through the aperture; contacting said plurality of elongated members of said holding portion with the structural member while said plurality of elongated members maintain positional relationship with the rod; and resisting removal of said holding portion through the aperture with the step of moving.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein said step of moving said holding portion to said predetermined extended position includes radially compressing an end of said holding portion after said step of inserting said holding portion into the aperture of the structural member.
- 17. The method of claim 15, wherein in said maintenance of positional relationship with the rod during said step of contacting said elongated members of said holding portion with the structural member, the rod does not move further through said housing.
- 18. A holding portion of a fastener for fastening an element to a structural member, wherein the fastener includes a rod and the structural member having an aperture, said holding portion comprising:
a housing adapted to threadably receive the rod; and a plurality of elongated members disposed with said housing, wherein an end surface area of said plurality of elongated members is substantially the difference between a cross-sectional area of the aperture and a cross-sectional area of the rod, said plurality of elongated members are moveable between an insertion position and an extended position, said plurality of elongated members are in said insertion position upon insertion of said holding portion in the aperture, and upon clearance of said holding portion from the aperture, said plurality of elongated members move to said predetermined extended position to resist removal of said holding member through the aperture.
- 19. The holding portion of claim 18, wherein the aperture has a substantially circular cross sectional area.
- 20. The holding portion of claim 19, wherein
the rod has a substantially circular cross sectional area, said difference between the cross-sectional area of the aperture and the cross-sectional area of the rod is an annulus, and the end surface area of each of said plurality of elongated members is an annular arc shaped surface area.
- 21. The holding portion of claim 20, wherein
said annular arc shaped surface areas provide a reduced bearing force per surface area.
- 22. The holding portion of claim 20, wherein
said plurality of elongated members can Her be moved to a bearing position while maintaining a positional relationship with the rod.
- 23. The holding portion of claim 20, wherein
said plurality of elongated members are moved to said predetermined extended position using a compression member.
- 24. The holding portion of claim 18, further comprising a lip on each of said elongated members.
- 25. The holding portion of claim 24, wherein
said holding portion having a cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said insertion position, and said lips are within said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said predetermined extended position.
- 26. The holding portion of claim 25, wherein said lips of said elongated members can be received in the aperture from either side of the structural member, the aperture greater than said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area.
- 27. A method of fastening an element to a structural member, comprising the steps of:
engaging a rod with a housing of a holding portion at a predetermined length of engagement, wherein
said holding portion includes a plurality of elongated members, and said length of engagement is greater than one-third of a length of a perimeter of a cross-sectional area of the rod; inserting said holding portion into an aperture of the structural member; moving said holding portion to an extended position after insertion through the aperture; contacting said plurality of elongated members with the structural member; resisting removal of said holding portion through the aperture; and positioning the element with the rod.
- 28. The method of claim 27, further comprising the step of:
maintaining the positional relationship between said elongated members and the structural member during said step of contacting.
- 29. The method of claim 27, further comprising the step of:
maintaining the positional relationship between said elongated members and the rod during said step of contacting.
- 30. A method of fastening an element to a structural member, comprising the steps of:
engaging a rod with a housing of a holding portion having a plurality of elongated members; inserting said holding portion and the rod into an aperture of the structural member, wherein an end surface area of said plurality of elongated members is substantially the difference between a cross-sectional area of the aperture and a cross-sectional area of the rod; moving said holding portion to an extended position after insertion through the aperture; contacting said elongated members of said holding portion with the structural member; and resisting removal of said holding portion through the aperture with the step of contacting.
- 31. The method of claim 30, wherein said step of moving said holding portion to an extended position includes radially compressing an end of said holding portion after said step of inserting said holding portion into the aperture of the structural member.
- 32. A holding portion of a fastener for fastening an element to a structural member, said holding portion comprising:
a housing having a recess and a plurality of elongated members; and a nut sized to be received in said recess, wherein said plurality of elongated members are moveable between an insertion position and an extended position, and at least one of said plurality of elongated members has a curvature.
- 33. The holding portion of claim 32, further comprising an annular groove in said housing, wherein
said plurality of elongated members are moved to said predetermined extended position using a compression member positioned in said annular groove.
- 34. The holding portion of claim 32, further comprising a rod, wherein
said nut receives the rod along a length of engagement, and said length of engagement is greater than one-third of a length of a perimeter of a cross-sectional area of the rod.
- 35. The holding portion of claim 32, further comprising a lip on each of said elongated members.
- 36. The holding portion of claim 35, wherein
said holding portion has a cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said insertion position, and said lips are within said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said predetermined extended position.
- 37. The holding portion of claim 36, wherein said lips of said elongated members can be received in all aperture in the structural member from either side of the structural member, said aperture greater than said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area.
- 38. A holding portion of a fastener for fastening an element to a structural member, said holding portion comprising:
a housing having a recess and a plurality of elongated members; and a nut sized to be received in said recess, wherein said plurality of elongated members are moveable between an insertion position and a predetermined extended position, at least one of said plurality of elongated members has a curvature, and said plurality of elongated members are moved to said predetermined extended position using a radial compression.
- 39. The holding portion of claim 38, wherein
said recess is sized to resist rotation of the nut.
- 40. The holding portion of claim 38, further comprising an annular groove in said housing, wherein
said plurality of elongated members are moved to said predetermined extended position using a compression member, and said compression member is positioned in said annular groove.
- 41. The holding portion of claim 38, wherein
said radial compression pivotally moves said plurality of elongated members to said predetermined extended position.
- 42. The holding portion of claim 38, further comprising a rod, wherein
said nut threadably receives the rod within said recess.
- 43. The holding portion of claim 38, wherein
an end surface area of each of said plurality of elongated members is an annular arc shaped surface area.
- 44. The holding portion of claim 38, further comprising a lip on each of said elongated members.
- 45. The holding portion of clan 44, wherein
said holding portion has a cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said insertion position, and said lips are within said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said predetermined extended position.
- 46. The holding portion of claim 45, wherein said lips of said elongated members can be received in an aperture in the structural member from either side of the structural member, said aperture greater than said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area.
- 47. A method of fastening an element to a structural member, comprising the steps of:
positioning a rod with a housing of a holding portion having a plurality of elongated members; inserting said holding portion and the rod into an aperture of the structural member; moving said plurality of elongated members to an extended position after insertion through the aperture; contacting said plurality of elongated members of said holding portion with the structural member; and resisting removal of said holding portion through the aperture with the step of moving.
- 48. The method of claim 47, wherein said step of moving said holding portion to an extended position includes radially compressing an end of said holding portion.
- 49. The method of claim 47, wherein during said step of contacting said elongated members of said holding portion with the structural member, the rod does not move further through said housing.
- 50. A holding portion of a fastener for fastening an element to a structural member, wherein the improvement comprises:
a housing having a recess and a plurality of elongated members; and a nut having a length of engagement and sized to be received in said recess, wherein said plurality of elongated members are moveable between an insertion position and a predetermined extended position.
- 51. The holding portion of claim 50, further comprising a lip on each of said elongated members.
- 52. The holding portion of claim 51, wherein
said holding portion has a cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said insertion position, said lips are within said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area when said elongated members are in said predetermined extended position.
- 53. The holding portion of claim 52, wherein said lips of said elongated members can be received in an aperture in the structural member from either side of the structural member, said aperture greater than said elongated members insertion position cross-sectional area.
- 54. An apparatus for fastening an element to a structural member, a holding portion adapted for use with a nut, comprising:
a plurality of elongated members disposed with the housing, wherein said housing has a recess sized to receive the nut, and said sized recess of said housing resists rotation of said nut.
