Claims
- 1. An optical modulation apparatus, comprising:
- an optical modulation device comprising scanning electrodes, signal electrodes disposed intersecting the scanning electrodes so as to form a pixel at each intersection of the scanning electrodes and signal electrodes, and an optical modulation material disposed between the scanning electrodes and signal electrodes and assuming different orientation states when supplied with voltages of different polarities exceeding threshold voltages;
- means for applying a scanning selection signal to a selected scanning electrode, said scanning selection signal comprising a pulse of one polarity in a first time period and a pulse of the other polarity in a later time period, the first time period having a longer duration than that of the later time period; and
- means for selectively applying either a first information pulse of one polarity or a second information pulse of the other polarity to the signal electrodes in phase with the pulse in the later time period of the scanning selection signal so as to apply either a first voltage signal exceeding one threshold voltage of the optical modulation material to a selected pixel on the selected scanning electrode or a second voltage signal not exceeding the one threshold voltage of the optical modulation material to a pixel other than the selected pixel on the selected scanning electrode and for applying a voltage signal in phase with the pulse of one polarity of the scanning selection signal so as to apply an erasing voltage signal exceeding the other threshold voltage of the optical modulation material to all or prescribed pixels on the selected scanning electrodes in the first time period;
- wherein said one polarity and the other polarity are defined with respect to the potential of a nonselected scanning electrode.
- 2. An optical modulation apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the voltage signal applied to the signal electrodes in the first time period has at least two voltage levels.
- 3. An optical modulation apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said at least two voltage level signal applying means applies a voltage signal comprising alternating pulses.
- 4. An optical modulation apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said alternating pulses comprise a pulse of one polarity and a pulse of the other polarity with respect to the potential level of a nonselected scanning electrode.
- 5. An optical modulation apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said scanning selection signal further includes a voltage at the same level as the potential of a nonselected scanning electrode in a period other than the first time period and the later time period.
- 6. An optical modulation apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said optical modulation material is a liquid crystal.
- 7. An optical modulation apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said liquid crystal is a chiral smectic liquid crystal.
- 8. An optical modulation apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said means for applying a scanning selection signal applies the pulse in the later period to the selected scanning electrode before the applying means applies the scanning selection signal to a subsequently selected scanning electrode.
